eCommerce for Beginners Course Lesson 1 - Why Do You Want to Start an Online Business?
Hey guys, Trevor here.
Welcome to my free e-course called eCommerce for beginners.
The way this course is going to start is by finding out your "Why?"
When you are getting started making money online, you probably have a lot of different reasons and emotional triggers that are getting to want to take more action to change your life, whether it be from getting tired of your day job or wanting to travel.
The world started an online business; otherwise known as an eCommerce business, can take on many different forms. We're going to dive in to how to start an eCommerce business. What are the best eCommerce platforms, and what eCommerce apps to use? I'm also going to show you all the cool tricks and tips on how to get started.
So let's dive into the WHY section first.
Here's a little bit about me and my past. When I was first starting out in Los Angeles, I needed to get a job. I needed money so that I can afford to live on my own. My parents lived in Seattle and Idaho, and I didn't have a family based in Los Angeles. But I wanted to live there because I wanted to go skateboarding a lot. It's either I get a job, or I go back to Seattle or Idaho. What I did was I went to Craiglist and looked around for a job. I found a job in a warehouse and that is where I ended working.
I got the job and grew from there. After a few years of working there, I transferred into sales because I got really good with the product lines. As soon as I discovered that many online businesses were buying stuff from the company I was working for and shipping them directly to their customers, I realized that I could probably start a similar business model myself in a different niche.
The company I was working for, focused on locks and security hardware. And I didn't want to compete directly with them. I decided to start in a different niche that my business partner and I got into at the time.
We thought of a really cool, trendy niche and a little bit higher priced than the 10 or 20 dollar average product value that you find like Amazon.com. At the time, I really wanted to get out of my day job. One of the WHYs I had was, I wanted to escape the rat race. I didn't want to live month to month anymore and to have more money in savings. I wanted to be able to travel.
One of the things about Los Angeles is it's very expensive to live there. It isn't easy to sustain a household while going to places, having fun, and putting money away every month. I ended up going into debt quite a few different times out there because I wanted to do stuff that I couldn't afford to do, and I would put on my credit cards.
I'm sure some of you guys might be in the same boat with that as well.
Now, I ended up being able to do what I want to do and kicked my boss out the door of my life.
And that was a big thing.
I didn't really like working for people. I didn't want to have somebody breathing down my neck, telling me what to do and when to do it. I wanted to build a life however I wanted to live it. If I didn't want to work that day, I wouldn't work that day. You know, that kind of stuff.
Building a business takes a lot of time and effort, and you end up working more than you might have worked at your day job like evenings and weekends. But the benefit is that you could take a day or even a week off if you want to. You can wake up late. You can take breaks whenever you want to and run errands, and really spend more time with your family. Spend more time at home or travel the world. Whatever floats your boat. whatever makes you happy.
Benefit number one was the location. Independents can work whenever and wherever and however much I wanted to at any moment. Of course, freedom comes with responsibility. So the deal there is that if you work more, you usually get more out of it. But of course, you have to be working smart and in the right ways too. Keep that in mind as well. Being location independent is awesome when it comes to eCommerce, especially with drop's shipping, which I'll talk about more later, where you don't actually have to have the products in stock in order to fulfill orders. It's a great way to live.
You might want to get out of your day job and have the money to not care about, you know, buying expensive food and buy stuff and going on trips and seeing plays and doing cool stuff. Financial freedom is awesome. I'm traveling around the world - traveling to other countries, traveling to concerts, and traveling for events that you want to see. Having the freedom to do that when you want to do it is really cool.
At the time back in LA with my day job, I always saw people go to Coachella, and I thought, man, how cool would it be to go to Coachella? I decided a few years later that, I would actually go there because I wouldn't have to ask for the time off anymore. I have my eCommerce business now, and that's what I did. No managers, no bosses. You may or may not like your boss, but you might not like the fact that they had to micromanage you.
I never like to micromanage. That's for sure, the beauty of building an eCommerce business. You're building an asset. And assets are really cool because someday, if you want to get out of the Niche for any reason, you can sell your business for quite a bit of money. Five to six figures is the usual mark for your small boutique online business. That's enough to live for a couple of years and literally do nothing. Or you can use that money, and parlay it into a bigger business venture. We do have to buy stock or capital or inventory and something to do it. So there's a lot of different options there.
