Google Fi Review: Is it any good?

Have you been jumping from one network to another in the past years? Maybe one is better in terms of connectivity and speed while the other offers higher value for money. If you've been switching from one network to another in search of the best carrier, then Google Fi might be your best choice. In this blog, we'll give you an in-depth review of Google Fi's features and offerings to know if it can indeed bring you the best of all networks.

About Google Fi

Since its establishment in 2015 as Project Fi, Google has been providing telecommunication services with its telephone calls, SMS, and mobile broadband using cellular networks and Wi-Fi. This service is powered through Wi-Fi and Sprint, T-Mobile, and US Cellular networks. As of 2019, the service is exclusive for US residents only.

Flexibility Features

The thing we love about Google Fi is its flexibility to give its users the best service using all available resources. Technically speaking, Google Fi can easily switch networks based on signal speed and strength. With Google Fi, you also get to connect safely to Wi-Fi hotspots through the encryption of an automatic VPN. Phone calls using this service can seamlessly transition from Wi-Fi to cellular networks in case Wi-Fi gets disconnected.

Global Coverage

Are you a well-traveled professional, worldwide hustler, or a backpacker? Whatever it is, the good thing is that you get full coverage on Google Fi in over 200 countries. You still have unlimited texts and same data rates through Google Fi's international coverage, but you get charged for an extra 20¢ per minute for voice calls.

Featured Devices

Before jumping into any of Google Fi plans, we'll also update the phone and devices that are compatible with Google Fi's services. This is important to note because when Project Fi was initially launched, it was only compatible with the Nexus 6 phone. When it transitioned to being a Google Fi, it slowly opened to other phones, including Apple, HTC, Samsung, Huawei, LG, and Motorola, among others. However, Google Fi is indeed way behind its compatibility features with iPhone 6 as the latest compatible Apple device (the latest models are still in beta testing). This is because Google is downplaying the use of other devices for its services. The silver lining is that - if you're interested in the latest Google Pixel device, then this is for you!

Here is the list of devices that are compatible with Google Fi:

Google:

  • Pixel 4 and Pixel 4XL
  • Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL

Apple

  • iPhone 11 (in beta)
  • iPhone X (in beta)
  • iPhone 8 (in beta)
  • iPhone 7 (in beta)
  • iPhone 6

Samsung:

  • Galaxy S9/S9+
  • Galaxy Note 9
  • Galaxy S8/S8+
  • Galaxy Note 8

Motorola:

  • Moto G7
  • Moto G6

For other devices, you may check its compatibility through Google Fi’s website.

Subscription Plans

Google Fi gives you the flexibility to choose between a month-to-month unlimited plan and a pay-per-gig plan, which you can interchange anytime. All plans come with unlimited calls and texts, 24/7 customer support, and low rates for international calls, - which you can cancel at any time since there is no contract binding you to the service provider.

For starters, these are the things that you need to take note of:

  • All plan starts at $20 per month per line that includes unlimited calls and texts.
  • Every gigabyte of data costs $10.
  • You are protected by the bill protection policy which means that the maximum price you will pay for your data is $70 per month, no matter how much data you use.

Pay-per-gig plans start at $20 per month plus $10 per GB of data. This plan lets you pay only for the data you've consumed, down to each cent. You also get to have full-speed hotspot tethering that enables you to share your connection within the same rate. Most importantly, your data is free after the first 6GB with a bill protection policy.

Then we have the unlimited plan at $70 per month. The plan comes with unlimited high-speed data, full-speed hotspot tethering, free data and texts abroad, free calls to select countries, and Google One membership. In terms of the data inclusion, you get up to 22GB per person but expect it to be slower after. However, when it comes to streaming, you only get 480p quality, which may not be the best if you're into HD. Another benefit of the plan is a free membership to Google One, which essentially gives you 100GB of cloud storage for your files.

Affordable Group Plans

While it's a no-brainer that Family plans are always cheaper, Google Fi leads the way in terms of offering the most affordable family plans. With Google Fi's family plans, you're sure to score deals that offer great value for money. For instance, an individual plan with 2GB of data costs $40 per month while a Family plan for 3 costs $70 per month for a 2GB data plan. This essentially means that you just need to add an extra $30 for two additional lines.

Adding extra lines is also easy and affordable, wherein you only need to pay an extra $15 per line per month, and the line gets the same inclusions. However, you need to be watchful of your data usage since everyone on the plan is sharing the same data allocation.

Customer Service

Google Fi  offers a 24/7 ticket support system partnered with the help center and user community. In the help center, you can access several resource articles from signing up, activation, billing, account management, to troubleshooting Google Fi. You can also access tips from the community center to help you address the underlying issues that other users usually face.

Like any other cellular network, Google Fi's customer support is nothing beyond normal. The good thing is that there are not so many negative reviews online, which means they're doing a pretty decent job. Also, since it's a relatively new offering - you can expect growth in the coming years.

Besides, if you encounter any issues, you can always Google your way out of it.

So, is Google Fi any good?

If you’re tired of switching in between networks, then Google Fi should work well for you. Google Fi combines the power of three networks in one service. Thus, you can only expect superb speed and performance. On top of that, joining Google Fi is pretty simple and easy. The service is further enhanced with good international coverage and VPN security. The only downside is that not all devices are fully compatible with service.

Overall, we believe that Google Fi is the right choice that's worthy of being considered.
