How To Get A Seller's Permit for Your High-Ticket Dropshipping Store

When you start a high-ticket dropshipping business, one of the first things you'll need to do is obtain a seller's permit. This is a document that allows you to legally sell products in your state, and it's required by law. In this article, we'll guide you through the process of getting a seller's permit for your high-ticket dropshipping store.

  1. Determine Your Business Structure: The first step in obtaining a seller's permit is to determine your business structure. Depending on your state, you may need to register your business as a sole proprietorship, partnership, LLC, or corporation. You can find information about business registration requirements on your state's Secretary of State website.

  2. Check If You Need A Permit: Once you've determined your business structure, you'll need to check if you need a seller's permit. In most states, you'll need a permit if you plan to sell goods that are subject to sales tax. However, the requirements can vary depending on your state. You can find information about sales tax requirements on your state's Department of Revenue website.

  3. Apply For A Permit: To apply for a seller's permit, you'll need to fill out an application and submit it to your state's Department of Revenue. You can usually find the application on the Department of Revenue website or by contacting the department directly. You may also be required to pay a fee when you submit your application.

  4. Provide Business Information: When you fill out the application, you'll need to provide information about your business, such as your business name, address, and tax identification number. You may also need to provide information about the products you plan to sell and your expected sales volume.

  5. Register For Sales Tax: In most states, obtaining a seller's permit also requires you to register for sales tax. This is because you'll be responsible for collecting and remitting sales tax on the products you sell. You can usually register for sales tax at the same time you apply for a seller's permit.

  6. Wait For Approval: Once you've submitted your application and paid any fees, you'll need to wait for your permit to be approved. This can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks, depending on your state. Once your permit is approved, you'll receive a certificate that you can display in your store or on your website.

  7. Renew Your Permit: In most states, seller's permits need to be renewed periodically, usually on an annual basis. You'll need to make sure you renew your permit on time to avoid any penalties or fines.

Getting a seller's permit is an important step in starting a high-ticket dropshipping store. By following the steps above, you can ensure that you're in compliance with your state's laws and regulations, and you can avoid any legal issues down the road. If you're unsure about the requirements for obtaining a seller's permit in your state, be sure to check your state's Department of Revenue website or consult with a tax professional.

For quick reference, here’s your guide on how to apply for seller’s permit in each state:

Alabama

For Alabama-based businesses, all Sales tax permits come from the Alabama Department of Revenue through its official web application, My Alabama Taxes (MAT).

To register, you will need to submit your identification details, business identification, business type, and date you started your business in Alabama. Once done, you’ll receive your account number after 3-5 days. There’s no need to renew sales tax permit unless there have been changes to the business in terms of name, location, or business structure.

Alaska

The State of Alaska does not have a sales and use tax; however, it is worth noting that several local jurisdictions impose local sales taxes. To be sure about your business requirements, you may contact the Alaska Department of Revenue – Tax Division to guide you in getting sellers’ permits and other business obligations and registration procedures.

Remote sellers who exceed the state’s economic nexus threshold (businesses with over $100,000 worth of sales in their current or previous calendar year) can opt to register online through Alaska Remote Sellers Sales Tax Commission (ARSSTC) portal.

Arizona

Arizona, unfortunately, made it on the list for states with complicated sales tax registration procedures. Instead of a sales tax, Arizona has a Transaction Privilege Tax, which technically works the same. The only thing that differentiates it is that it’s a tax on the vendor for the privilege of conducting business in Arizona. The good thing is that only selected industries are taxed. For Amazon sellers, you might want to consult with a tax expert to know more about the procedures for this niche.

To register, you can get your sales tax permit online at the State of Arizona Department of Revenue. For starters, you will need to secure complete business information including the following: type of legal business name, type of business ownership, SSN, Federal Employer Identification Number, contact details, exact business location, the date the business started in Arizona, employee information, North American Industrial Classification System (NAICS) code required for all businesses, and owner identification among others. Once you have completed your registration, it will take four to six weeks before you get your license through the mail. In terms of renewals, the Arizona Department of Revenue will remind you of the renewal of your TPT permit, which happens every year, January 1, to be exact.

Arkansas

For businesses in Arkansas, you can register your business and get a sales tax permit online through the Arkansas Taxpayer Access Point (ATAP). To register, you need to submit all your business information, including SSN or ITIN number, business identification information, business entity type, nature of the business, and NAICS code. It usually takes 8-10 days to process your sales tax permit. Lastly, there’s no need to renew your license regularly.

California

Wholesale and retail businesses in California are required to get a seller’s permit, also known as reseller permit. The seller’s permit is particularly necessary for these types of businesses – Individuals, Partnerships, Corporations, Organizations, LLPs, LLCs, and Husband/wife Co-ownership. The rule also applies if you’re planning to sell products during seasonal periods like Christmas in the form of a temporary seller’s permit.

You may apply for a seller’s permit in-person, online, or by mail. The California Department of Tax and Fee Administration provides a straightforward way to register for a seller’s permit. You’ll get guidance throughout the process in terms of all the licenses you need to secure for your business. Registration with CDTFA usually is fast, with permits being issued one day to two weeks upon registration.

Thus, it will come handy if you have all the necessary information like SSN, EIN, and other business data that may be required.
