How To Get A Seller's Permit for Your High-Ticket Drop Shipping Store

How to get a Seller’s Permit for Your High-Ticket Drop Shipping Store

A seller’s permit is essential to dropshipping from suppliers directly to your customers. Real suppliers will always require that you have a seller’s license for you to get a dealer account. You’ll also need one to avoid getting charged sales tax on every order you place with your supplier. You will pass on the sales tax to your customer, which you will then remit to your state every year or quarter, depending on your reporting requirements. Each process is different for every business.

To determine how to get your seller’s permit, just type into Google “sellers permit [STATE],” and you should obtain the seller’s permit for your state in the first few organic links.

For quick reference, here’s your guide on how to apply for seller’s permit in each state:

Alabama

For Alabama-based businesses, all Sales tax permits come from the Alabama Department of Revenue through its official web application, My Alabama Taxes (MAT).

To register, you will need to submit your identification details, business identification, business type, and date you started your business in Alabama. Once done, you’ll receive your account number after 3-5 days. There’s no need to renew sales tax permit unless there have been changes to the business in terms of name, location, or business structure.

Alaska

The State of Alaska does not have a sales and use tax; however, it is worth noting that several local jurisdictions impose local sales taxes. To be sure about your business requirements, you may contact the Alaska Department of Revenue – Tax Division to guide you in getting sellers’ permits and other business obligations and registration procedures.

Remote sellers who exceed the state’s economic nexus threshold (businesses with over $100,000 worth of sales in their current or previous calendar year) can opt to register online through Alaska Remote Sellers Sales Tax Commission (ARSSTC) portal.

Arizona

Arizona, unfortunately, made it on the list for states with complicated sales tax registration procedures. Instead of a sales tax, Arizona has a Transaction Privilege Tax, which technically works the same. The only thing that differentiates it is that it’s a tax on the vendor for the privilege of conducting business in Arizona. The good thing is that only selected industries are taxed. For Amazon sellers, you might want to consult with a tax expert to know more about the procedures for this niche.

To register, you can get your sales tax permit online at the State of Arizona Department of Revenue. For starters, you will need to secure complete business information including the following: type of legal business name, type of business ownership, SSN, Federal Employer Identification Number, contact details, exact business location, the date the business started in Arizona, employee information, North American Industrial Classification System (NAICS) code required for all businesses, and owner identification among others. Once you have completed your registration, it will take four to six weeks before you get your license through the mail. In terms of renewals, the Arizona Department of Revenue will remind you of the renewal of your TPT permit, which happens every year, January 1, to be exact.

Arkansas

For businesses in Arkansas, you can register your business and get a sales tax permit online through the Arkansas Taxpayer Access Point (ATAP). To register, you need to submit all your business information, including SSN or ITIN number, business identification information, business entity type, nature of the business, and NAICS code. It usually takes 8-10 days to process your sales tax permit. Lastly, there’s no need to renew your license regularly.

California

Wholesale and retail businesses in California are required to get a seller’s permit, also known as reseller permit. The seller’s permit is particularly necessary for these types of businesses – Individuals, Partnerships, Corporations, Organizations, LLPs, LLCs, and Husband/wife Co-ownership. The rule also applies if you’re planning to sell products during seasonal periods like Christmas in the form of a temporary seller’s permit.

You may apply for a seller’s permit in-person, online, or by mail. The California Department of Tax and Fee Administration provides a straightforward way to register for a seller’s permit. You’ll get guidance throughout the process in terms of all the licenses you need to secure for your business. Registration with CDTFA usually is fast, with permits being issued one day to two weeks upon registration.

Colorado

If you’re selling goods in the state of Colorado, you must obtain a seller’s permit. To get a seller’s permit, you should have the following details ready – complete business legal information, Federal Employer ID number, SSN, business entity type, ownership information, product list, date the business started, and Department of Revenue account number among others.

Once you have the complete set of requirements, you may submit your application online through Colorado Business Express or in-person by sending it to the Colorado Department of Revenue. Registration processing takes typically four to six weeks.

Connecticut

If your business focuses on the sale & rental of goods, a taxable service, or hotel/motel/lodging operations in the state of Connecticut, you are required to get a sales tax permit before making any sale. The rule applies to all individuals, corporations, partnerships, and other business entities regardless of the sales and tax to be collected.

To obtain a Connecticut Sales and Use Tax Permit, you can apply online through Taxpayer Service Center (TSC) or in-person by visiting any of the Department of Revenue Services offices.

Delaware

There’s no state sales tax in Delaware. However, if you run any kind of business that sells goods, then you are required to obtain a Delaware Sales Tax Resale Number.

Florida

If your business engages in wholesale, retail, leasing, and sale of services, you’ll probably need to obtain a seller’s permit in Florida. To register, you only need to file the Florida Business Tax Application online or download the form and submit it together with the other requirements at your local taxpayer service center or directly to the Department of Revenue. Thus, it will come handy if you have all the necessary information like SSN, EIN, and other business data that may be required.

Florida does not charge a fee for acquiring a seller’s permit. It’s also convenient to know that the license won’t expire unless you won’t use it for more than a year.

Georgia

All businesses that sell tangible items are required to obtain a sales tax permit. Registering is easy with the Georgia Tax Center. To move on with your application, you need to secure all your business’ information including Business history with previous state IDs, entity type, basic business information, additional business ownership & relationships, business activity details, and all other personal identifying information for partners.
