This is the only comparison in the session recording category that actually matters, because one of these tools is free forever and the other one is not. Everything else is a footnote next to that.
Microsoft Clarity costs nothing, caps nothing, and records unlimited sessions. Lucky Orange starts at $32 a month for 3,500 sessions. So the entire question is whether what Lucky Orange adds is worth real money when a competent free option exists.
I run both, on different stores, for different reasons. After 15 years building and managing high-ticket stores at E-Commerce Paradise, my answer depends almost entirely on your average order value, and I will show you where the line sits.
Fair warning if you came here hoping I would talk you into the paid one. For a lot of readers, Clarity is the right answer and I am going to say so.
Ask a Leaving Visitor Why They Are Leaving
Live chat and on-page surveys are the one thing free tools cannot do, and they are included on the $32 Lucky Orange plan alongside heatmaps, recordings and funnels.
The Short Answer
| Factor | Lucky Orange | Microsoft Clarity |
|---|---|---|
| Price | From $32/mo | Free |
| Session limit | 3,500 on entry plan | None |
| Heatmaps | Yes | Yes |
| Session recordings | Yes | Yes |
| Conversion funnels | Yes, unlimited | No |
| On-page surveys | Yes, unlimited | No |
| Live chat | Yes | No |
| Live visitor view | Yes | No |
| Form analytics | Yes | Limited |
| Support | Included | Community only |
Read that table honestly and the pattern is obvious. The passive research features are in both. Everything that lets you interact with a live visitor is only in the paid one.
What Clarity Genuinely Does Well
Let me be clear that Clarity is not a stripped-down teaser designed to upsell you. Microsoft gives it away because behavioral data feeds their advertising business, and the product is properly built.
Unlimited sessions is the headline and it is not a trick. There is no point at which a traffic spike stops your recordings, which is genuinely better than every paid tool including Lucky Orange.
The automatic insights are the underrated part. Clarity flags rage clicks, dead clicks, excessive scrolling and quick backs without you configuring anything, which means a store owner who has never watched a recording gets a useful list on day one.
It also integrates with Google Analytics, so you can jump from a segment in GA4 to the recordings for that segment. For a store owner already living in GA4, that connection removes a lot of friction.
What You Are Actually Paying For
Conversion Funnels
This is the biggest functional gap. Clarity shows you individual sessions and aggregate heatmaps. It does not build a funnel that tells you what percentage of people move from product page to cart to checkout to purchase.
Without a funnel you are watching sessions and guessing which step is worst. With one, you know where to point the microscope before you watch anything. On a low-traffic high-ticket store, that ordering saves you hours.
Surveys and Live Chat
Recordings tell you what someone did. They never tell you why. A visitor who scrolls to your shipping policy and leaves might be reacting to cost, timeline, or the fact that you do not ship to their state, and the recording looks identical in all three cases.
An exit survey asks them. One well-timed question usually beats another fifty recordings, and neither the survey nor the live chat exists in Clarity at any price.
Live Visitor View
Seeing who is on your site right now sounds like a novelty and mostly is. The exception is a quote-driven store where you can start a chat with someone sitting on a $12,000 product page. That is a real sales mechanic.
Someone to Email
Clarity has community support. Lucky Orange has a support team. This matters exactly once, on the day tracking breaks and you cannot tell whether it is the tool, your theme, or a new app.
Find the Checkout Step That Is Costing You Sales
Unlimited conversion funnels on the entry plan, so you know which step to investigate before you watch a single recording.
Where the Line Actually Sits
Here is the arithmetic I use with clients, and it is simpler than people expect.
Lucky Orange Build costs $384 a year. If your average order value is $2,000 and your net margin is 20 percent, one recovered sale is $400 of profit. The tool pays for itself with a single additional order across the entire year.
Now run it on a $40 average order value. Same 20 percent margin means $8 of profit per order, so you need 48 extra orders a year just to break even on the subscription. On a low-ticket store that is a genuinely harder case to make.
So the line is roughly this. Above a few hundred dollars average order value, paid is easy to justify. Below it, Clarity plus discipline beats paid plus neglect every time.
The Volume Wrinkle
There is a second consideration that cuts the other way. Lucky Orange caps you at 3,500 sessions on the entry plan, and Clarity does not cap at all.
If you run a content-heavy site pulling 50,000 monthly sessions where most visitors are readers rather than buyers, paying per session is the wrong shape. Clarity handles that volume for free and you lose nothing you were going to use.
Which One for Your Situation
New Store, Under $20,000 a Month
Clarity. Install it today, watch ten recordings this week, and spend the $384 on traffic instead. You have a traffic problem, not a conversion problem, and I would rather you learned that cheaply. My guide to validating a high-ticket niche is the better use of your attention right now.
High-Ticket Store With Real Traffic
Lucky Orange. The funnel and the survey are what turn watching into fixing, and at a $2,000 order value the maths is not close. I broke down which tier fits in my guide to Lucky Orange pricing.
Quote Request or B2B Store
Lucky Orange, specifically for the live chat and live visitor view. When a buyer is sitting on your quote page, being able to open a conversation is worth more than any amount of retrospective analysis.
Content Site or Blog With Heavy Traffic
Clarity. Unlimited sessions, and you are not going to run checkout funnels on a blog anyway.
Privacy-Sensitive Setup
Worth thinking about which company holds the data. Clarity being free means Microsoft gets value from it somehow, and if that bothers you or your legal position, paying for a tool with a straightforward vendor relationship is a legitimate reason on its own. The FTC’s privacy and security guidance is a reasonable starting point for what you should be disclosing either way.
Can You Run Both?
Yes, and for about a month you probably should. Two scripts is not ideal for page weight, but a month of overlap tells you whether the paid features change what you actually do.
The honest test is this. After four weeks, ask yourself whether you opened a funnel or launched a survey. If you did neither, cancel the paid one and keep Clarity with a clear conscience.
Watch your page speed while both are running. Third-party scripts stack, and Largest Contentful Paint is the metric that will tell you if you have gone too far.
What Neither One Fixes
Both tools are diagnostic. Neither writes better product copy, neither speeds up your site, and neither recovers a cart on its own.
Cart abandonment in particular gets misread constantly. Baymard Institute puts the industry baseline around 70 percent, so watching people leave your cart is not automatically evidence that something is broken. Compare to the benchmark first.
Recovery is a separate job that belongs to your email tool, and I covered the sequence in my write-up on abandoned cart emails that actually recover sales.
How Each One Handles Your Data
This is where the two products differ in ways that do not show up on a feature grid, and it is worth understanding before you commit either way.
Lucky Orange gives you 60 days of retention on every plan, with paid upgrades to 90, 180 or 365 days. Clarity’s retention is shorter and you have no option to extend it, which matters if you want to compare this November against last November.
For a seasonal high-ticket store that gap is genuinely significant. If your business does half its revenue in Q4, being unable to pull up last year’s checkout behavior is a real limitation rather than a nitpick.
On masking, both tools let you exclude sensitive fields, and both default to masking obvious things like password inputs. Neither one absolves you of checking. I have seen stores capture full billing addresses in recordings because a custom checkout field was not on the default block list.
Who Owns the Data
Clarity is free because Microsoft derives value from aggregate behavioral signal. That is a straightforward trade and Microsoft is transparent about it, but it is a trade, and you should make it knowingly rather than by accident.
Lucky Orange is a paid vendor relationship. You are the customer rather than the input, which for some businesses is worth the subscription on its own regardless of features.
If you have European buyers, that distinction gets sharper. Consent obligations apply to both tools, but the conversation with your legal advisor is simpler when there is a contract and a data processing agreement in place.
Setting Either One Up on Shopify
Both install as a script and both take under ten minutes on Shopify. The setup is not the hard part. What people get wrong is everything immediately after.
Exclude your own traffic first, before you look at a single recording. Your IP, your VA’s IP, your developer, your agency. On Lucky Orange this also protects your session allowance, and on both tools it stops you drawing conclusions from your own browsing.
Next, decide what you are actually measuring. Pick one page and one question. “Why do people leave the product page without adding to cart” is a question. “Let me look around” is not, and it is how people end up with a tool installed and no insight three months later.
Third, if you are on Lucky Orange, build the checkout funnel on day one and then leave it alone for two weeks. You need a clean baseline before you start changing things, and the temptation to fix something in week one is what destroys your ability to measure whether the fix worked.
Do Not Record Everything
On Lucky Orange this is a budget decision, because every recorded session counts against your 3,500. On Clarity it is an attention decision, because unlimited recordings of pages that never convert is just a bigger haystack.
Focus both tools on the pages where money changes hands. Product pages, collection pages, cart, checkout, and your quote form if you have one. Your blog traffic is rarely worth watching unless you are specifically debugging a content-to-product path.
Watch Your App Stack
Every recording tool adds a script, and most high-ticket Shopify stores are already carrying a dozen apps. If your product pages are slow, adding this will make them marginally slower, and you may end up diagnosing a speed problem you just made worse.
Check your page weight before and after. If the tool pushes you past a threshold that matters, that is useful information about your app stack rather than a reason to avoid measurement.
The 30-Day Test to Decide
Rather than agonising over the comparison, run this and let the answer come to you.
Week one, install Clarity only. Watch ten recordings of visitors who reached a product page and left. Take no notes, change nothing. You are calibrating your eye.
Week two, start the Lucky Orange trial alongside it. Build one funnel for your checkout and launch one exit survey asking a single question. Let both collect.
Week three, read the funnel and the survey responses. Ask yourself honestly whether either told you something the Clarity recordings had not already made obvious.
Week four, decide. If the funnel and survey changed what you were going to do, pay the $32. If they confirmed what you already saw for free, cancel and keep Clarity. Either outcome is a win, because you decided on evidence rather than on a feature table.
Run the Trial Alongside Your Free Tool
Seven days with every feature unlocked, including funnels, surveys and live chat, so you can find out whether paid changes your decisions before you pay for anything.
Common Questions
Is Clarity Really Free Forever?
Yes, with no session cap and no upgrade path being dangled. Microsoft has kept it free since launch and the business reason for that has not changed.
Will Two Recording Tools Conflict?
Not functionally. They both observe independently and neither interferes with the other. The only cost is page weight, which is why the overlap should be temporary rather than permanent.
Does Clarity Have Any Session Limit at All?
No. This is the single area where the free tool genuinely beats the paid one, and on a high-traffic content site it is decisive.
Can I Export Recordings?
Neither tool gives you a portable archive you can import elsewhere. Whichever you pick, treat your historical recordings as something you lose if you switch, and write down your conclusions rather than assuming you can revisit the footage.
What About Hotjar?
Hotjar sits between these two and now belongs to Contentsquare following the acquisition. It has a free tier and strong survey tooling, and I covered where it lands against both of these in my alternatives roundup.
My Verdict
If your average order value is under a couple of hundred dollars, use Clarity and do not feel like you are cutting corners. It is a genuinely good product and the money is better spent on traffic.
If you sell high-ticket, pay the $32. The funnel tells you where to look and the survey tells you why, and those two things together are what turn a recording habit into actual revenue. One recovered order pays for the year.
If you are still deciding between more than these two, I compared seven options with current pricing in my roundup of the best Lucky Orange alternatives, including one tool on that list that is quietly winding down and should not be on anybody’s shortlist.
