NordLayer Pricing 2026: What Five Users Actually Costs

Affiliate disclosure: This post contains affiliate links. If you buy through them, I may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Full disclosure

NordLayer’s Core plan is $11 per user per month. It also has a five-user minimum and a mandatory $40 a month dedicated IP server. So the real floor is $95 a month, not $11, and that gap is the single most important thing on this page.

I run Ecommerce Paradise, and business VPN pricing is unusually misleading because the per-user figure is quoted without the two things that actually set your bill: the seat minimum and the required server add-on.

This is every NordLayer plan, what the real monthly cost looks like at a realistic team size, and the one configuration change that more than halves it. Figures verified against NordLayer’s own pricing page in September 2026.

Secure Your Team’s Access Without Enterprise Pricing

NordLayer Lite is $8 per user a month with no required server add-on, which is $40 a month for a five-person team rather than $95.

Every NordLayer Plan and Price

All figures from NordLayer’s published pricing page, quoted on annual billing.

Plan Per user, annual Minimum users Dedicated IP server Real floor
Lite $8 5 Not available $40 a month
Core $11 5 +$40 a month, required $95 a month
Premium $14 5 +$40 a month, required $110 a month
Enterprise From $6 200 Quoted From $1,200 a month

Annual billing saves 20 to 22 percent depending on tier. There is no free trial, only a 14-day money-back guarantee, which means you are paying up front and asking for it back rather than testing before you commit.

The Two Numbers That Change Everything

The five-user minimum applies whether you have five people or one. A solo store owner buying Core pays for five seats plus the $40 server, so $95 a month, which is $1,140 a year to secure one person’s connection.

The $40 dedicated IP server is required on Core and Premium and is not available on Lite. That is the detail almost every comparison misses. It means Core does not cost $55 a month for five people, it costs $95.

Put those together and NordLayer’s advertised $11 becomes $19 per user per month at the five-user minimum on Core. At ten users it settles back toward $15. The per-user figure only becomes honest at scale.

The Configuration Change Nobody Mentions

Lite at $8 per user has no dedicated IP server option, which sounds like a limitation and is frequently a saving.

Five users on Lite is $40 a month. Five users on Core is $95. That is $660 a year, and the question is simply whether you need a fixed IP address.

You need one if a supplier portal, a payment processor, a client system or your own server does IP whitelisting, which means only connections from a known address are allowed through. That is a real requirement and it is exactly what a dedicated IP is for.

You do not need one if what you actually want is encrypted connections for a distributed team, safe use of public wifi, and access to region-locked tooling. Lite covers that.

So before you buy Core, write down the specific system that requires a fixed IP. If you cannot name one, you are paying $660 a year for a feature you are not using.

What Each Tier Adds

Lite at $8

Encrypted internet access and threat prevention. Your team connects through NordLayer’s network, traffic is encrypted, and known malicious destinations get blocked. For a small distributed team this is the actual job most people are buying.

Core at $11

Adds the dedicated IP server, a cloud firewall and site-to-site connectors. This is where NordLayer stops being a VPN and starts being network access control. If you have infrastructure to gate behind a fixed address, this is the entry point.

Premium at $14

Adds granular network segmentation and the ability to interconnect sites and devices. This is for a business with several offices or several networks that need to talk to each other under policy.

For a store owner with a laptop and two contractors, Premium is buying infrastructure management for infrastructure you do not have.

Enterprise from $6

Cheaper per user and gated behind a 200-user minimum, so the entry cost is around $1,200 a month. Mentioned for completeness rather than relevance.

Ten Devices for $3.49 a Month Instead

If what you actually want is encrypted browsing and geo-flexibility for yourself, NordVPN does that for a fraction of the price with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

How It Compares on Real Cost at Five Users

Per-user pricing hides seat minimums and required add-ons, so here is what five people actually costs across the category.

Service and plan Per user Required add-on 5-user monthly total
NordLayer Lite $8 None $40
NordLayer Core $11 $40 server $95
Twingate Starter Free to 5 users None $0
Twingate Teams $5 None $25
Tailscale Personal Free to 6 users None $0
Tailscale Standard $8 None $40
GoodAccess Essential $7 $49 gateway optional $35

Two things stand out. Twingate and Tailscale both have genuinely free tiers covering five or six users, which NordLayer has no equivalent to. And GoodAccess is structured almost identically to NordLayer, at a slightly lower price, with the gateway optional rather than required.

NordLayer Lite at $40 is competitive with Tailscale Standard at the same price. NordLayer Core at $95 is not competitive with anything here.

What You Are Actually Buying at the Premium

Two things justify NordLayer’s price over the cheaper options, and they are worth naming honestly.

The compliance posture is real and current. NordLayer renewed its ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certification in December 2025 with no nonconformities logged. In July 2026 Nord Security announced NordLayer had completed its SOC 2 Type II audit with no exceptions.

If a client or partner asks for a security questionnaire, being able to point at those certifications for your access layer is worth something. The open-source and developer-oriented tools in this category often cannot produce the same paperwork.

The second is that it is a managed product with support, not infrastructure you assemble. Tailscale and Twingate are excellent and they assume a degree of technical comfort. NordLayer assumes you want it to work without learning how it works.

Where the Money Actually Goes in a Store

Worth being direct, because this category sells hard on fear.

A business VPN does not protect your store. Your Shopify or WooCommerce admin is protected by strong passwords, two-factor authentication and not reusing credentials. None of that requires a VPN, and a VPN does not substitute for any of it.

What a business VPN genuinely solves is a team accessing internal systems from untrusted networks, and IP whitelisting where a supplier or processor requires it. Those are real problems and they arrive later than most people expect.

For a high-ticket store with one or two people, two-factor authentication on every account and a password manager will do more for your security than $95 a month of network infrastructure. Spend the difference on the things that actually grow the business.

If you are earlier than that and still choosing what to sell, the high-ticket niches list is a better use of the next hour.

The setup that genuinely does need doing first is the legal and supplier groundwork, and the business formation guide covers it.

What a Business VPN Does and Does Not Cover

This category is sold on security anxiety, so it is worth separating what the product does from what people assume it does.

It encrypts traffic between your team’s devices and the internet or your internal systems. On hotel wifi, on a co-working network, on a phone tether in an airport, that is genuine protection against someone on the same network watching your traffic.

It gives you a fixed IP address that systems can whitelist. If a supplier portal or a client’s server only accepts connections from a known address, this is the mechanism that makes remote work possible without exceptions being made for each person.

It gates access to internal resources by identity rather than by network location. That is the zero trust part, and it is what Twingate and Tailscale are built around more directly than NordLayer is.

What it does not do is protect your store from being hacked. Your Shopify admin, your email and your payment processor are secured by credentials and two-factor authentication. An attacker guessing a reused password does not care what network you connected from.

It also does not make you anonymous, does not stop phishing, and does not protect a device that is already compromised. Those are separate problems with separate answers.

When a Store Actually Crosses the Threshold

Three specific triggers, and until one of them happens you are buying insurance against a risk you do not have.

A supplier or processor requires IP whitelisting. This is the most common one in high-ticket ecommerce, because dealer portals and some payment systems restrict access by address. When it happens you need a fixed IP, and that is a real requirement rather than a nice-to-have.

You hire someone in another country. The moment a contractor is logging into your systems from a network you know nothing about, controlling that access centrally stops being theoretical. This is where most stores first genuinely need it.

You are asked to complete a security questionnaire. Clients and larger partners increasingly ask how you control access to systems holding their data. Answering that with a certified product is easier than answering it with a password manager and good intentions.

If none of those apply, the honest answer is that you do not need this yet, and I would rather say so than sell you a $1,140 annual subscription that sits unused.

The Money-Back Guarantee Is Not a Trial

NordLayer offers 14 days money back rather than a free trial, and the difference matters more than it sounds.

With a trial you connect a few devices, test whether it breaks anything, and walk away if it does. With a money-back guarantee you pay for five seats and a server up front, which on Core is $95, then ask for it back if you decide against it.

That changes who tests it. People evaluate free trials casually and money-back guarantees reluctantly, which is presumably the point.

Twingate, Tailscale and GoodAccess all let you use the product before paying, with Twingate and Tailscale offering permanently free tiers rather than time-limited ones. If you want to know whether a business VPN breaks your supplier portal or slows your team down, test on one of those first even if you end up buying NordLayer.

One practical note on the guarantee itself: read the terms before relying on it. Refund windows on annual plans are usually counted from the purchase date rather than from when you finish rolling it out, and a fourteen-day window can close while you are still getting people connected.

Common Questions

Is there a NordLayer free trial?

No. There is a 14-day money-back guarantee, which means paying first and requesting a refund. Twingate, Tailscale and GoodAccess all let you test without that.

Can I buy fewer than five seats?

Not on the standard plans. The five-user minimum applies regardless of team size, so a solo operator pays for five.

Is the $40 server really mandatory?

On Core and Premium, yes, per NordLayer’s pricing page. It is not available on Lite, which is why Lite is dramatically cheaper in practice.

Does NordLayer come with NordVPN?

No. They are separate products from the same parent company with separate subscriptions. That confusion is the most common reason people overpay here, and I covered it in NordLayer vs NordVPN.

What about Enterprise at $6 a user?

It requires 200 users, so the entry cost is around $1,200 a month. It is not a cheaper option for a small team, it is a volume price.

Costing It Out at Different Team Sizes

The per-user figure only becomes meaningful once you spread the fixed costs across enough seats, so here is what NordLayer actually costs as a team grows.

Team size Lite total Core total Core, real per user
1 person $40 $95 $95.00
5 people $40 $95 $19.00
10 people $80 $150 $15.00
20 people $160 $260 $13.00
50 people $400 $590 $11.80

Core only approaches its advertised $11 at around fifty users. Below ten, the $40 server dominates the bill and the per-user price is close to meaningless as a comparison figure.

That is the shape of the product. NordLayer is priced for a company with a real IT function, and the small-team pricing is the same product sold at a size where the fixed costs hurt.

Reading Business VPN Pricing Pages Without Getting Caught

Three patterns run through this entire category, and NordLayer uses two of them.

Seat minimums are quoted quietly and change the entry price completely. NordLayer and GoodAccess both require five users. Twingate and Tailscale do not, which is why their free tiers are usable by an individual and NordLayer has no equivalent.

Required add-ons are presented as features. The $40 dedicated IP server reads like an option on the pricing page and is mandatory on Core and Premium. Always check whether the thing that makes a tier worth buying is included in the tier price.

Annual rates shown as monthly figures is the third, and everyone does it. NordLayer’s $8, $11 and $14 are annual-billing rates, and annual billing saves 20 to 22 percent, which puts monthly billing roughly 25 to 28 percent above those figures. Compare like with like before you conclude anything.

The number that actually matters is your total monthly bill at your real headcount, including every mandatory add-on. Work that out for two or three options before you look at a feature table, because it usually settles the decision on its own.

Switching Away, and What It Costs You

If you are already on NordLayer and reconsidering, the migration is genuinely light compared to most software.

There is no data to move. A VPN or access layer holds configuration, not records. You are rebuilding a policy set and reconnecting devices, not exporting a database.

The one thing that does not transfer is your dedicated IP address. If a supplier portal, a processor or a client system has whitelisted the address NordLayer gave you, changing providers means getting a new address whitelisted everywhere it appears. That is an email to each of them and a wait, and it is the only part of this that can take weeks rather than hours.

So make a list of every system that has your current IP on an allowlist before you cancel anything. If that list is empty, switching is an afternoon. If it has five suppliers on it, plan the change rather than doing it on a Friday.

Device rollout is the other piece. Each team member installs a client and signs in, which is straightforward, and it is still worth doing in a scheduled window rather than discovering mid-week that two people cannot reach the systems they need.

The Verdict on Price

NordLayer Core at $95 a month for five users is hard to justify against Twingate at $25 or a free tier that covers the same team size. The advertised $11 is not the price you pay.

NordLayer Lite at $40 for five users is a different proposition and a defensible one, provided you need centralised team access control but not a fixed IP address. You get a managed, properly certified encrypted access layer at the same price as Tailscale Standard, with support and compliance paperwork behind it.

Buy Core only if you can name the specific system that requires a fixed IP address. If you cannot, Lite does the job for $660 a year less.

And if you are one person wanting encrypted browsing rather than team network access, you are looking at the wrong product entirely. NordVPN is $3.49 a month on a two-year term and covers ten devices.
