TikTok announced Buy Direct on October 5, a one-click checkout that lets shoppers buy from brands inside the For You feed without leaving the app.
For an ecommerce store owner, this is TikTok asking to become your checkout page. If you run a high-ticket store like the ones we build at Ecommerce Paradise, a shopper could go from a video to a paid order without ever touching your site, your email capture, or your sales phone line. TikTok has not said who the merchant of record is, what it charges, or when your store gets access.
The announcement came at Advertising Week New York alongside an AI Shopping Assistant, a cost-aware version of GMV Max, and a US launch of TikTok’s off-platform ad network. Below: what was announced, where each outlet disagrees on rollout, what I think it does to a $1,500-plus cart, and five moves to make this week.
Every channel that sells your products, TikTok included, needs a legal entity behind it, so form your LLC with Northwest Registered Agent, the best LLC formation service for ecommerce owners. Northwest puts its own address on your public filings and does not sell yours, which is the reason I would pick it over formation mills that upsell you. Form your LLC with Northwest →
TikTok Buy Direct Puts One-Click Checkout in the For You Feed
Buy Direct lets a shopper purchase from a brand inside TikTok with one tap, using saved payment methods, according to The Next Web. Adweek reports it works separately from TikTok Shop, so a brand does not need a Shop listing for the feature to apply.
David Kaufman, TikTok’s global head of monetization and product partnerships, told Adweek: “We’re trying to move people from discovery all the way through to action, and there’s a lot that we can do to bring AI to that journey.” Adweek also reports TikTok is building the features with commerce and payment partners including Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza and Stripe.
The second piece is the Shopping Assistant, a conversational AI agent. Per TechCrunch, it answers questions about product details, shipping, sizing and availability, and remembers a shopper’s preferences through the conversation. The Next Web adds that it can complete the purchase inside the same chat.
TikTok announced several advertiser tools in the same batch. According to ChannelX, GMV Max for TikTok Shop sellers now factors in costs such as affiliate commissions, coupons and referral fees when it calculates return on investment. Smart+ also gained a Search Ads Campaign format and a Creative Selection tool that pulls advertiser, AI-generated and creator assets into one approval flow.
TikTok’s MCP connectors now work with Claude, Kimi, Perplexity and Snowflake, per ChannelX, which quotes TikTok saying advertisers using its MCP rose more than 200% since launch. PPC Land points out the 200% figure comes with no absolute baseline.
The TikTok Ad Network, the rebranded Pangle, is now opening more broadly to US advertisers, Adweek reported. It spans nearly 400,000 apps globally, with heavy concentration in gaming apps.
The rollout story depends on which outlet you read
Adweek says both features “are now beginning to roll out to users and brands in the U.S.” The Next Web says no launch date has been announced. ChannelX reports Buy Direct and Agentic Leads are global-only for now, while the Shopping Assistant, Smart+ and MCP changes are available in Europe.
TechCrunch lists what it could not find: the merchant of record, payment processing details and fees, an exact rollout timeline, and how Shopify stores differ from third-party stores. Those are the four details a store owner needs before budgeting anything. I treat Buy Direct as announced, not available, until TikTok or Shopify publishes the setup steps.
TikTok Shop’s $15.8B Year Set Up the Buy Direct Move
The scale TikTok is pointing at is real. eMarketer estimates TikTok Shop generated about $15.8 billion in US sales in 2025, roughly 18% of all US social commerce, as The Next Web notes. TikTok’s own economic impact report says 54 million Americans bought a product after watching a TikTok video.
Neither number comes with a prior-year baseline in the coverage, and the 54 million figure is TikTok’s own. That 54 million figure, with no purchase frequency or order value attached, tells you reach, not revenue per shopper. I would not plan a budget around either one.
Large retailers are already moving onto the platform. Retail Dive reported on September 29 that Best Buy will debut on TikTok Shop in late October with nearly 10,000 products, handling fulfillment and returns itself. I covered that launch in my breakdown of Best Buy joining TikTok Shop, and Buy Direct arrives one week later.
The pattern matches what happened with AI checkout elsewhere. Meta’s Muse AI can now check out through Shop Pay, which I wrote up in my post on Meta’s Muse and Shopify checkout. A separate Shop Pay agent flaw got its own coverage in the Shop Pay AI checkout security bug post. Every large platform now wants the purchase to finish on its own surface.
Is there a counterpoint?
None of the outlets I read quoted an independent merchant or analyst criticizing Buy Direct. The skepticism so far is about missing details, from TechCrunch and PPC Land, not about the product itself. TikTok’s argument is that a shorter path from video to order lifts conversion, and that argument is plausible for low-price impulse items.
What TikTok Buy Direct Means for a High-Ticket Shopify Store
Everything in this section is my analysis, not reporting.
My read is that Buy Direct is built for impulse buys, and a $2,000 patio set or a $4,000 treadmill is not an impulse buy. High-ticket shoppers compare prices, read reviews, check warranty terms and often call before they order. One-click checkout removes friction that your buyer does not feel at that price point. The Shopping Assistant is the more interesting feature for you, because it answers the exact questions that stall large orders: delivery time, freight cost and stock.
The assistant will quote your data, so your data has to be clean
If the assistant tells a shopper your 300-pound item ships in three days and the supplier lead time is three weeks, you own the refund and the dispute. Shipping times, freight surcharges, availability and return terms need to be right in your product feed and on your product pages. My guide on turning Google Shopping clicks into sales on high-ticket products covers the same data hygiene, and it pays off on Google whether or not TikTok ever reaches your store.
Bulky freight is where this bites hardest. LTL rates moved up this week, as I covered in my post on LTL rates rising October 5, so a delivery estimate that was right in September can be wrong now. If an AI agent repeats a stale number to a buyer, the store pays for it.
The hypothetical math on a one-click order
TikTok has not published fees for Buy Direct, so treat this as hypothetical math, not reporting. Say your average order is $1,800 at a 25% gross margin, which leaves $450 of gross profit per order. Every percentage point of platform fee costs $18. A hypothetical 5% fee takes $90, which is 20% of your gross profit before ads, chargebacks or returns.
Now add the unknown that matters most. If TikTok is the merchant of record, it controls the dispute process. If you are, a one-click order from a stranger with a saved card is exactly the type of order that turns into a chargeback. My post on chargeback prevention for high-ticket stores lays out the evidence you want on file, and none of it is collected in a one-tap flow unless the platform passes it to you.
You lose the customer relationship unless TikTok hands it over
An order that closes inside TikTok may not give you an email address you can market to. Your Klaviyo flows, abandoned cart recovery and post-purchase upsells only work on customers you can reach. Whether Buy Direct passes name, email and shipping data to the brand is unconfirmed in everything I read. Ask before you spend.
That is the marketplace dependency problem in a new costume. If a channel owns the checkout, the customer data and the dispute process, you are renting your own sales. I made the same case about processors in my post on payment processors as a single point of failure, and the logic carries over to any channel that sits between you and the buyer.
Scenarios and thresholds
If Buy Direct arrives on Shopify with customer data passed through, a clear merchant-of-record answer and fees under what you pay on Google Shopping, it is worth a capped test. If the fee is high, the data stays with TikTok, or disputes land on you without evidence, skip it and keep your budget on search. Search buyers arrive with intent, which is the reason my comparison of TikTok Ads and Google Ads comes out the way it does for big-ticket categories.
The GMV Max change is the one piece you can use without waiting. A tool that now counts affiliate commissions, coupons and referral fees when it reports return gives you a number closer to net ROAS. If you already sell through TikTok Shop, compare the new figure to your old one before you change a bid. If you want a team to run those channels, I built the turnkey done-for-you service for owners who would rather not babysit every new platform feature.

Prepare Your Store for TikTok Buy Direct Before It Rolls Out
Five moves for this week, in order of how fast they pay off.
- Check whether your TikTok channel shows Buy Direct. Open the TikTok app inside your Shopify admin and look for a new checkout or eligibility setting. If nothing appears, do not assume it is a glitch, since the rollout status is disputed across outlets. Check again next week.
- Audit the data an AI assistant would quote. Pull your top 20 products by revenue and verify shipping time, freight cost, stock status and return terms on each. Fix any mismatch between the page and your supplier’s current lead time before an agent repeats it.
- Write down your merchant-of-record questions. Ask your TikTok rep or Shopify support who is merchant of record on Buy Direct orders, what the fee is, who handles disputes, and whether the customer’s email and phone reach you. Put the answers in a document you can compare against your Airwallex or Stripe terms.
- Protect post-purchase support. Orders from a new channel will generate “where is my order” tickets. Set up tracking updates with AfterShip. Route questions through Gorgias so a TikTok buyer gets the same service as a site buyer. For orders over $1,000, call the customer before the freight carrier does.
- Recalculate net ROAS in your books. Use Finaloop or your accountant’s reports to get net margin per channel after fees, returns and chargebacks. Then compare it to the cost-aware GMV Max figure so you know which channel earns the next dollar. Book a discovery call with me if you want help building that reporting.
If you are earlier in the process and still choosing what to sell, start with my high-ticket niches list before you spend a cent on any channel. The brand and the supplier matter more than the checkout button.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is TikTok Buy Direct?
It is a one-click checkout announced October 5, 2026 that lets a shopper buy from a brand inside TikTok without leaving the app. Adweek reports it is separate from TikTok Shop.
Is Buy Direct available to my Shopify store right now?
Unconfirmed. Adweek says the features are beginning to roll out in the US, The Next Web says no launch date has been announced, and TechCrunch says TikTok did not detail how Shopify stores are handled. Check the TikTok channel in your Shopify admin.
Who is the merchant of record on a Buy Direct order?
TikTok has not said, per TechCrunch. The answer decides who handles disputes, so read my guide to chargeback prevention for high-ticket stores before you test it.
Does one-click checkout help high-ticket stores?
My read is that it helps less than it helps cheap impulse products, because large-cart buyers research and often call first. It can still help a repeat buyer or an add-on accessory, which ties into increasing average order value without more ad spend.
Should I move ad budget from Google to TikTok because of this?
Not on an announcement with no fees and no rollout date. Keep search budget where intent is highest and cap any TikTok test. The best ad platforms for high-ticket dropshipping guide shows how I rank the options.
What changed in GMV Max?
According to ChannelX, it now factors in affiliate commissions, coupons and referral fees when it calculates return for TikTok Shop sellers. That should make its reported ROAS closer to net.
Where do I start if I do not have a store yet?
