TikTok Shop’s median top-selling product costs around $40, according to a Marketplace Pulse report built on more than 150,000 U.S. sellers and published October 9.
If you sell furniture, powersports gear, mobility products or anything else in high-ticket dropshipping, that number frames every TikTok decision you make this quarter. TikTok announced one-click checkout and an AI shopping assistant on Monday, and both are arriving on a marketplace where the typical winner sells for about $40. At Ecommerce Paradise the question is always the same: does this change what you spend, list or build?
Short answer: it changes where TikTok sits in your funnel, not whether you should care about it. Below you get what Marketplace Pulse found, how TikTok got from a video feed to a checkout, what I’d do with the numbers, and five moves for the next seven days. I am working from the public summary, because Marketplace Pulse gates the report’s full data behind a form, and I will flag what that summary leaves out.

TikTok Shop Report: $40 Median Product, Beauty Near 30%
Marketplace Pulse published its TikTok Shop Trends Report 2026 on October 9. The report tracks more than 150,000 U.S. sellers and 4.5 million products. The company boiled it down to one line in its summary article: “TikTok Shop doesn’t sell what Amazon sells, and it doesn’t reward what Amazon rewards.”
Among top-selling products, more than two-thirds of revenue comes from things applied to the body, taken into it or worn on it, according to the summary. Beauty alone accounts for close to 30% of revenue. The summary says a general marketplace’s typical assortment “barely registers” on the platform.
Marketplace Pulse puts the median top product at “around $40,” a price the summary frames as one shoppers can pay “without leaving the feed.” The summary gives no share of sales by price band and does not name the band where most volume sits.
The report ranks three growth drivers by how closely each tracks with sales: followers, video output and catalog size. Marketplace Pulse says they do not carry equal weight and that only one of them predicts sales. The public summary does not say which. Its verdict on the whole exercise: “Content is the moat.”
The leaderboard also churns. Marketplace Pulse says it turns over faster than on any marketplace the company tracks, using 30-day activity against lifetime totals. In its words, “The top is easy to get but hard to hold.” A viral month can put a seller near the top, and staying there is the hard part.
An earlier Marketplace Pulse analysis, published September 10, compared each platform’s 10,000 largest U.S. sellers by business name. About one in five of TikTok Shop’s 100 largest sellers also ranks in Amazon’s top 10,000, against about one in 25 in the reverse direction. Only 498 sellers appear on both lists, roughly 5% of either, and among those a seller’s Amazon rank has almost no relationship to its TikTok rank. The same article cites a separate finding that 1% of TikTok Shop sellers drive 60% of the platform’s sales.
The report is organized around seven trends, and the public summary previews three. Seller concentration, the badge program, where leading sellers are registered and the Amazon overlap are named without figures. High-ticket products are not addressed anywhere in the summary.
From Buy Direct to Best Buy: How TikTok Shop Got Here
TikTok Shop launched in the U.S. in September 2023. eMarketer estimates it generated about $15.8 billion in U.S. sales in 2025, roughly 18% of U.S. social commerce, as TechCrunch reported on October 5.
That day, at Advertising Week New York, TikTok announced two shopping tools. Buy Direct lets users buy from a brand with one click from the For You feed, per TechCrunch. The Shopping Assistant is what TikTok calls a “conversational AI agent designed to help users discover and purchase products.” TikTok said it built the features with Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza and Stripe, among others.
The Next Web added that TikTok also launched Agentic Leads, an agent that qualifies leads in direct messages, and opened its Ad Network to U.S. advertisers across nearly 400,000 apps outside TikTok. TikTok gave no launch date for the shopping features.
TechRepublic reported that both tools are in eligibility-based advertiser testing, and interested advertisers must contact their TikTok sales representative. It describes Buy Direct as using stored payment methods and saved addresses, and the assistant as a chat window on merchant product pages in TikTok’s in-app browser, with checkout completing on the merchant’s website. The three articles do not agree on exactly where checkout happens, and none of them says who is the merchant of record or what fees apply.
I covered the launch in my breakdown of TikTok’s Buy Direct checkout. Best Buy had already joined the marketplace with 10,000 products, as I reported in my October 1 post.
Two caveats belong on the table. TikTok’s own Economic Impact Report says 54 million Americans bought a product after watching a TikTok video, per TechRepublic, and that figure comes from the company, not an independent measurement. Marketplace Pulse’s data also describes top-selling products, so it shows what survives on the platform, not what the average listing earns. I did not find independent data on how Buy Direct performs for products above $500.
What a $40 Median Means for a High-Ticket Store Owner
My read is that TikTok’s marketplace and a high-ticket store solve different problems. TikTok sells things people grab mid-scroll: serums, supplements, leggings. A $2,000 recliner or a $6,000 hot tub rarely gets bought between two videos, and the report’s own numbers point the same direction.
Here is hypothetical math, not a reported figure. Say your store sells a $1,800 patio set at a 22% gross margin. That is about $396 of gross profit per order. A $40 product at the same margin earns $8.80, so you would need 45 TikTok orders to match one patio set sale, before ad costs, returns, or the content you would have to produce to win each of those 45 sales.
My rough thresholds, and they are opinion. Under about $100 average order value in a body or wearable category, you have a real reason to test a TikTok Shop listing. Between $100 and $500, run TikTok as paid discovery and keep checkout on your own store. Above $500, treat the platform as the place people first see your product, then send them to your site and your phone number, because high-ticket buyers call before they buy.
My whole model is built around baby boomers and Gen X buyers who are willing and able to pay by card. Marketplace Pulse’s summary does not break out TikTok Shop buyer age, so I won’t claim the platform’s shoppers are younger. My read is that price point, not demographics, is what keeps most high-ticket products off the leaderboard.
Buy Direct is the part to watch. Faster checkout helps most when a purchase takes seconds to decide, and TechRepublic’s own caution is that quicker checkout raises the stakes on accurate product information, inventory and clear delivery and return terms. For a high-ticket store those are the exact failure points behind disputes. Before you route any sales through a feed checkout, tighten your chargeback prevention.
TechRepublic also notes that merchant-provided answers in an AI assistant are not independent reviews. That makes your own proof matter more, and a review tool like Yotpo is how I’d keep real customer feedback attached to every hero product.
For high-intent demand I still put money where buyers type model numbers, which is Google Shopping. I explain that side in my guide to turning Google Shopping clicks into sales. I lay out the follow-through in why high-ticket Google Ads need a complete conversion system.
Where TikTok does earn budget is the top of the funnel. I compared it with search in TikTok Ads vs Google Ads, and the logic holds: TikTok finds people who did not know they wanted the product, and Google closes the ones who did.
Run TikTok ads for that first job. Then use the past-buyer exclusion I covered in Meta’s latest ad update so you stop paying to show a $3,000 product to someone who already owns it.
Watch your Shopify admin too. Shopify is one of the partners TikTok named, so any checkout or channel change will probably show up there first.
Most of this is operator overhead: feed rules, checkout tests, return terms, ad structure and a steady supply of video. If you would rather have someone else carry it, my team builds and runs high-ticket stores through the turnkey done-for-you service, which is the route I point people to when a platform changes faster than they can keep up.
TikTok rewrites the checkout every few weeks, and your store should not depend on you refereeing it. Let my team build and run the high-ticket store while you decide where the ad money goes. See the turnkey done-for-you service →
TikTok Shop Test Plan: 5 Moves Before You List a Single SKU
Run these five in order. None of them requires you to open a TikTok Shop listing.
- Pull average order value by traffic source for the last 90 days in your Shopify analytics, then mark every SKU above $500. Those stay off TikTok Shop for now, and they become your candidates for TikTok discovery ads instead.
- If you already advertise on TikTok, email your sales representative three questions about Buy Direct: who is the merchant of record, what fees apply, and whether the order lands in your Shopify admin. Those are the three gaps in every article I read.
- Cap the test. Put no more than 10% of your monthly ad budget into TikTok discovery for 30 days, and judge it on assisted conversions and branded searches, not last-click sales. That 10% is my rule of thumb, not a platform benchmark.
- Build the content before the budget. Shoot three short demo videos per hero product: an unboxing, the product in a real room, and one customer question answered on camera. Script them with Claude. Then finish the cuts in Canva.
- Catch the viewers who do not buy. Add an email capture to every TikTok landing page and connect it to a welcome flow in Klaviyo. My walkthrough of the email flows every store should run shows which ones to build first.
If you want a second set of eyes on your numbers before you spend, book a discovery call and we will go through your order values together.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is TikTok Shop worth it for high-ticket products?
Based on what is public, not as a checkout channel. Marketplace Pulse puts the median top product at around $40 and its summary does not address high-ticket items. Use TikTok to get products seen, then close the sale on your own site and by phone.
What is TikTok Buy Direct?
It is an in-app checkout that lets users buy from a brand with one click from the For You feed, per TechCrunch. TechRepublic reports it is in eligibility-based advertiser testing, and no launch date, fee schedule or merchant-of-record detail has been published.
Where can I read the full Marketplace Pulse report?
The report lives on a Marketplace Pulse landing page and the full figures sit behind a form. The seven trends include price bands, category shares and which growth driver predicts sales.
Should I add low-ticket products to ride TikTok Shop?
I would not mix them into a high-ticket brand. If you want to experiment, run a separate store with a catalog from a supplier like Spocket and a separate budget. For the main store, start from picking a high-ticket niche from a consumer brand and use my free niche list as a starting filter.
Will AI shopping agents change how my buyers check out?
They already are, across several platforms. Google opened a checkout hub in Merchant Center, which I covered in Google’s UCP hub post. Meta’s Muse agent can now complete purchases with Shop Pay, as I explained in my Muse checkout breakdown.
Do I need an LLC before selling on TikTok Shop?
Whatever platform you sell on, an LLC keeps personal assets separate from store disputes. I have not verified TikTok Shop’s current seller onboarding rules, so check them in TikTok’s seller portal before you apply. My post on how long an LLC takes covers timing, and the Northwest box above covers who I would use to form it.
