Best Registered Agent Services Compared for 2026 (Ecommerce Edition)

Every LLC needs a registered agent. That’s a legal requirement in all 50 states. Your registered agent is the person or company that receives legal documents, tax notices, and official state correspondence on behalf of your LLC. If you don’t have one, your LLC can’t operate legally. I’ve been running ecommerce businesses for 15+ years at E-Commerce Paradise, and I’ve used or evaluated almost every major registered agent service at this point.

Short version: for most ecommerce operators, Northwest Registered Agent is the best overall choice because of its privacy focus and excellent customer service. If you want the cheapest option, Bizee offers free registered agent service for the first year with any formation (then 119 dollars per year). If you manage multiple LLCs across states, MyCompanyWorks has the best multi-entity dashboard.

Let me walk through the full comparison so you can pick the right one for your situation.

What Does a Registered Agent Actually Do?

Before we get into the comparison, let me make sure we’re on the same page about what a registered agent does.

A registered agent (called a “statutory agent” in some states) is the official point of contact between your LLC and the state. They receive:

  • Service of process (lawsuits)
  • State tax notices
  • Annual report reminders
  • Government correspondence
  • Official legal documents

Every LLC must have a registered agent in the state where it’s formed, and that agent must have a physical street address (not a PO box) in that state. They must be available during normal business hours to receive documents.

You can technically be your own registered agent if you meet the requirements, but most ecommerce operators use a service because of the privacy benefits and availability requirements. I’ll explain why below.

If you haven’t set up your LLC yet, my complete business formation checklist walks through picking a registered agent along with all the other LLC setup steps.

Why Use a Professional Registered Agent Service?

Three main reasons:

Privacy

Your registered agent’s address becomes part of the public record. If you use your home address, your home becomes searchable through the Secretary of State database. For ecommerce operators who work from home, this is a privacy concern. Using a registered agent service keeps your home address private.

Availability

Registered agents must be available during business hours to receive documents. If you travel, work variable hours, or want the flexibility to be away from your desk, a professional service handles this for you.

Professional Handling

Services scan and forward important documents to you immediately. They track compliance deadlines and send reminders. If you’re served with a lawsuit, they handle it professionally and notify you right away. Missing a service of process because you weren’t home can lead to default judgments against your business.

The Contenders: Registered Agent Services Worth Considering

I’m going to compare the services I’ve actually used or recommended to my coaching clients. There are other services out there, but these are the ones I trust enough to recommend to people building real businesses.

Northwest Registered Agent

My top overall pick for 2026.

Pricing

Northwest Registered Agent charges 125 dollars per year per state. No tiered packages, no upsells, no BS.

What I Like

Privacy first: Northwest is famous for “Privacy by Default.” They don’t sell your information to third parties (unlike some competitors), they use their own address to shield yours where possible, and they’ve built their brand around keeping your information private.

Real customer service: Their “Corporate Guides” answer the phone, not robots or overseas call centers. If you have a question, an actual knowledgeable person picks up.

Same-day scanning: Documents received at their address are scanned and uploaded to your online account the same day they’re received.

No upsells: Unlike LegalZoom and some others, Northwest doesn’t bombard you with upsell offers during signup or after.

What to Watch

More expensive than Bizee’s free first year. If you’re forming multiple LLCs and want to minimize year-one costs, Bizee’s free tier is hard to beat. Also, Northwest doesn’t have as many “business services” add-ons as some competitors (no EIN filing, no payroll, etc.), which is either a pro or a con depending on how you see it.

Best Use Case

Solo and small operators who want privacy, great customer service, and a clean no-upsell experience. The de facto recommendation for most ecommerce operators I work with.

Bizee (Best for Cost-Efficiency)

The best value option, especially for new operators.

Pricing

Bizee offers free registered agent service for the first year with any formation package (including their free formation tier). After year one, it’s 119 dollars per year.

What I Like

Free first year: If you’re forming an LLC through Bizee anyway, the registered agent service is free for 12 months. That’s a real savings compared to competitors.

Compliance tracking: Bizee’s dashboard tracks your annual report deadlines and sends reminders. Good for new operators who are learning the ropes.

Cheap renewal: 119 dollars per year is slightly cheaper than Northwest’s 125 dollars.

Multiple services bundled: You can add EIN filing, operating agreement templates, and other services during signup.

What to Watch

Bizee used to be called “Incfile” and changed its name. Some longtime users still refer to it by the old name. Also, Bizee has more upsells in the signup flow than Northwest. You need to be careful to select only the services you want.

Best Use Case

New operators forming their first LLC who want to minimize first-year costs. Also good for budget-conscious operators forming multiple LLCs.

LegalZoom

The most well-known name, but not always the best value.

Pricing

LegalZoom charges 299 dollars per year for registered agent service. That’s more than twice Northwest or Bizee.

What I Like

Brand recognition: Some banks and business partners prefer formations through LegalZoom. Not a practical advantage but a perception one.

Legal services bundle: LegalZoom offers legal plans and attorney access as add-ons. If you want one vendor for everything, they’re a decent choice.

Mobile app: LegalZoom has a solid mobile app for managing your LLC on the go.

What to Watch

Much more expensive than competitors for essentially the same core service. Also, the signup flow is packed with upsells and the registered agent service is often bundled with other services you may not need.

Best Use Case

Operators who want the brand-name service and are willing to pay a premium. Also good if you want access to LegalZoom’s legal plans and attorney services as part of a bundle.

MyCompanyWorks

The best pick for operators managing multiple LLCs across states.

Pricing

MyCompanyWorks charges 99 dollars per year per state. That’s actually cheaper than Bizee’s renewal rate.

What I Like

Multi-entity dashboard: If you have multiple LLCs, their dashboard shows all of them in one place with compliance deadlines, document storage, and filing status.

Strong compliance tracking: Automatic reminders for annual reports, state filings, and deadlines across all your entities.

Reasonable pricing: 99 dollars per year is the cheapest of the “premium” services I’ve tested.

No upsells: The signup flow is cleaner than LegalZoom’s or even Bizee’s.

What to Watch

Not as well known as Northwest or LegalZoom, which doesn’t matter practically but may matter for brand recognition. Also, their website interface feels slightly dated compared to Northwest’s polished experience.

Best Use Case

Operators with 2+ LLCs who want centralized management and compliance tracking. Also good for cost-conscious operators who want a premium service at a lower price point.

ZenBusiness

A newer option with bundled startup tools.

Pricing

ZenBusiness charges 199 dollars per year for registered agent service, though it’s often included in their higher-tier formation packages.

What I Like

Bundled startup tools: ZenBusiness includes website tools, domain registration, and other startup resources in their higher packages. If you’re starting from scratch and want one vendor for multiple services, this is convenient.

Good compliance support: Their compliance dashboard is solid, tracking deadlines and sending reminders.

What to Watch

More expensive than Bizee, Northwest, or MyCompanyWorks for the core registered agent service. The bundled extras may not be as strong as dedicated services (Shopify for ecommerce, GoDaddy for domains, etc.).

Best Use Case

First-time entrepreneurs who want a bundled startup package with registered agent service, website tools, and compliance support all in one place.

Quick Comparison Table

Here’s a side-by-side summary:

  • Northwest Registered Agent: 125 dollars/year, best privacy, best customer service, no upsells
  • Bizee: Free first year (then 119 dollars/year), best first-year value, solid compliance tracking
  • LegalZoom: 299 dollars/year, brand recognition, legal plan bundles, most expensive
  • MyCompanyWorks: 99 dollars/year, best multi-entity dashboard, cheapest premium service
  • ZenBusiness: 199 dollars/year, bundled startup tools, good for beginners

My Recommendations By Scenario

New Ecommerce Operator Forming Their First LLC

Go with Bizee to get the free first year. You’ll save 99 to 299 dollars in year one. After year one, evaluate whether you want to renew with Bizee or switch to Northwest for better privacy and service.

Privacy-Conscious Operator

Go with Northwest Registered Agent. Their privacy practices are significantly better than competitors, and the 125 dollars per year is worth it for peace of mind.

Multi-Store or Multi-LLC Operator

Go with MyCompanyWorks for the multi-entity dashboard. Managing compliance across multiple LLCs is much easier with a unified view, and their pricing is the cheapest of the premium services.

Operator Who Wants Everything in One Place

Go with LegalZoom if you want one vendor for formation, registered agent, legal plans, and various business services. More expensive but convenient.

First-Time Entrepreneur Building From Zero

Go with ZenBusiness for their bundled startup package that includes registered agent, website tools, and compliance support.

What About Being Your Own Registered Agent?

You can be your own registered agent if:

  • You’re a resident of the state where your LLC is formed
  • You have a physical street address in that state (not a PO box)
  • You’re available during business hours to receive documents

I don’t recommend this for most ecommerce operators for three reasons:

Privacy: Your home address becomes public record.

Availability: Business hours availability is hard if you travel, have other jobs, or work variable hours.

Professional handling: Missing a service of process notice because you weren’t home can result in default judgments against your business. The 99 to 125 dollars per year for a service is worth it to avoid this risk.

The only operators I see successfully running their own registered agent service are those with traditional brick-and-mortar offices that are staffed during business hours anyway.

Registered Agent for Non-Residents

If you’re forming an LLC in a state where you don’t live (for example, forming in Wyoming from California), you MUST use a registered agent service with a physical address in that state. You cannot use your out-of-state home address.

All the services I mentioned above work for non-residents. Northwest, Bizee, and MyCompanyWorks are particularly good for non-resident operators because they offer registered agent services in all 50 states.

Do I Need Legal and Bookkeeping Services Along With My Registered Agent?

Not necessarily, but they work well together.

For legal support beyond what your registered agent provides, LegalShield offers flat-rate monthly access to attorneys for business legal questions. This is much cheaper than hiring a lawyer by the hour.

For self-service legal documents (operating agreements, contracts, etc.), LegalNature has templates specifically for LLCs.

For bookkeeping, Finaloop is my top pick for ecommerce because it integrates with Shopify and other ecommerce tools. QuickBooks is the industry standard for general small business accounting.

External Resources on Registered Agents

For general information on registered agents, the SBA business registration page explains the role of registered agents in business formation. The IRS starting a business page covers the federal tax implications of LLC formation. The Nolo registered agent resources have plain-English articles explaining the role.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to pay for a registered agent service?

No. You can be your own registered agent if you meet the requirements (resident of the state, physical address, business hours availability). Most ecommerce operators use a service for privacy and convenience.

What happens if I don’t have a registered agent?

Your LLC can be administratively dissolved. You can’t operate legally without a registered agent on file with the state.

Can I change my registered agent?

Yes. You file a change of registered agent form with the state and pay a small fee (usually 10 to 50 dollars). All the services I mentioned handle this process for you if you’re switching to them.

Do I need a separate registered agent in each state?

Yes. If your LLC operates in multiple states, you need a registered agent in each state. All the services I mentioned offer nationwide coverage.

What’s the difference between a registered agent and a statutory agent?

Same thing. Different states use different terminology. “Registered agent” and “statutory agent” both refer to the same role.

Can I use a PO box as my registered agent address?

No. Registered agent addresses must be physical street addresses where documents can be delivered in person.

How fast do registered agents forward documents to me?

Quality services (Northwest, Bizee, MyCompanyWorks) scan and upload documents same-day or next-day. They’ll also email you immediately when something important arrives.

Do registered agents file my annual reports?

Not by default. They remind you of deadlines but don’t file the reports for you. Some services offer automated filing as a paid add-on.

Can I use a virtual mailbox as my registered agent?

Usually no. Most states require registered agents to be humans or companies with physical offices, not virtual mail services. Check your state’s specific rules.

Is the cheapest option usually the best?

Not necessarily. Bizee’s free first year is great for new operators, but the cheapest renewal rate isn’t always worth it if the service quality is poor. Northwest’s 125 dollars per year is worth the extra cost for the privacy and customer service.

Where to Go From Here

Pick a registered agent service from the list above based on your situation. Most ecommerce operators should go with Northwest Registered Agent for the best overall experience, or Bizee if you’re forming your first LLC and want to save on year-one costs. Either is a solid choice.

Don’t overthink this decision. The differences between quality services are relatively small. Pick one, move on, and focus on actually building your business.

Final Thoughts

A registered agent is one of those “set it and forget it” business services. You pick a good one, pay the annual fee, and never really think about it again until you need them. The key is picking a reliable service the first time so you don’t have to switch later.

My strong recommendation is Northwest Registered Agent for most operators, Bizee if you want to save money in year one, or MyCompanyWorks if you’re managing multiple LLCs. All three are solid choices that won’t let you down.

I wish you guys the best of luck out there. Take action this week. Pick a registered agent service, get your LLC properly set up, and focus on building a business that actually generates revenue.
