Transaction Fees Are the Silent Killer of Ecommerce Profit Margins
Every time a customer buys from your store, you pay fees. Payment processing fees from Stripe or PayPal are unavoidable since that is the cost of accepting credit cards. But some ecommerce platforms charge an additional transaction fee on top of payment processing, and that extra cut directly reduces your margins.
For high-ticket stores, transaction fees hit especially hard. A 2% platform transaction fee on a $2,000 product means $40 per sale going to your platform just for the privilege of using a third-party payment gateway. Sell 50 of those a month and you are giving away $2,000 monthly, or $24,000 per year, in platform fees alone.
At E-Commerce Paradise, I always factor transaction fees into the total cost analysis when helping clients choose platforms. This guide covers the cheapest ecommerce platforms that charge zero transaction fees, so you can keep more of every sale. For background on building a profitable high-ticket dropshipping business, start with our comprehensive guide.
Understanding Transaction Fees vs. Payment Processing Fees
Before diving into platforms, let me clarify the difference because these get confused constantly.
Payment processing fees are charged by your payment gateway (Stripe, PayPal, Square, etc.) for handling the actual credit card transaction. These are typically 2.9% plus $0.30 per transaction and apply on every platform. You cannot avoid them.
Platform transaction fees are an additional percentage charged by your ecommerce platform on each sale. This is separate from and on top of payment processing fees. Not all platforms charge these, and the ones that do typically waive them if you use their proprietary payment system.
When I say “no transaction fees” in this guide, I mean no additional platform fees. You will still pay standard payment processing fees to your gateway on every platform.
BigCommerce: Best Overall Value With No Transaction Fees
BigCommerce charges zero transaction fees on every plan, from Standard ($39 per month) all the way up to Enterprise. This is one of BigCommerce’s strongest selling points and a major differentiator from competitors.
Pricing
Standard: $39 per month ($29 annual). Plus: $105 per month ($79 annual). Pro: $399 per month ($299 annual). All plans include zero transaction fees regardless of which payment gateway you choose. You can use PayPal, Stripe, Authorize.net, or any of their 65 plus supported gateways without paying extra.
What Makes BigCommerce Stand Out
Beyond the no-fee pricing, BigCommerce includes features that competitors charge app fees for: built-in product reviews, real-time shipping quotes on all plans, professional analytics, and multi-channel selling. When you add up the cost of a Shopify subscription plus the apps needed to match BigCommerce’s built-in features, BigCommerce often comes out significantly cheaper.
The Catch
BigCommerce has annual sales volume thresholds. Standard supports up to $50,000 per year, Plus up to $180,000, and Pro up to $400,000. Exceeding your plan’s threshold requires upgrading to the next tier. For rapidly growing high-ticket stores, you can hit these limits quickly. A store selling $1,500 items only needs 34 sales to exceed the Standard plan threshold.
Best For
Growing ecommerce businesses that want robust built-in features, stores using third-party payment gateways, and B2B sellers who need customer group pricing and volume discounts. Browse our high-ticket niches list for product categories that work well on BigCommerce.
WooCommerce: Free Platform With No Transaction Fees
WooCommerce is a free WordPress plugin that never charges transaction fees. Since it is open-source software that you host yourself, there is no platform company taking a cut of your sales.
Pricing
The WooCommerce plugin itself costs $0. Your actual costs come from hosting ($10 to $200 per month), premium extensions ($100 to $1,000 per year), a theme ($0 to $200 one-time), and potentially developer help ($500 to $5,000 per year). Total annual cost typically ranges from $300 to $5,000 depending on your setup.
What Makes WooCommerce Stand Out
Complete freedom to use any payment gateway with zero additional fees. Full control over your store’s code and functionality. The massive WordPress plugin ecosystem adds virtually any feature you need. The lowest possible entry cost for a functional online store.
The Catch
“Free” is misleading. Hosting, security, updates, and maintenance all cost money or time. Technical knowledge is required to manage a WooCommerce store effectively. Plugin conflicts and security vulnerabilities require ongoing attention. The total cost of ownership can exceed hosted platforms when you account for everything.
Best For
Technically comfortable store owners who want maximum control, content-heavy stores that leverage WordPress’s blogging capabilities, and budget-conscious entrepreneurs willing to invest time in exchange for lower costs.
Shift4Shop: Genuinely Free With No Transaction Fees
Shift4Shop offers something unique: a completely free ecommerce platform with no monthly subscription and no transaction fees, as long as you use Shift4 Payments as your payment processor.
Pricing
The free plan includes unlimited products, unlimited bandwidth, and access to all features including their full template library. There is genuinely no monthly fee. The trade-off is that you must use Shift4 Payments for processing, which charges standard rates of 2.9% plus $0.30 per transaction.
If you do not want to use Shift4 Payments, paid plans start at $29 per month, which still includes no additional transaction fees beyond your chosen payment gateway’s processing rates.
What Makes Shift4Shop Stand Out
It is the only hosted ecommerce platform that offers a genuinely free plan with no transaction fees and no feature restrictions. You get built-in SEO tools, product reviews, email marketing, and even a blog. For store owners watching every dollar, it is hard to beat free.
The Catch
The free plan requires US-based businesses and the use of Shift4 Payments exclusively. The platform’s design templates, while functional, are not as polished as Shopify or Squarespace. The app marketplace is smaller. Customer support quality has received mixed reviews. And the platform has a steeper learning curve than some competitors.
Best For
Budget-conscious US-based sellers who want a zero-cost entry point, stores that are comfortable using Shift4 Payments as their processor, and entrepreneurs who prioritize cost savings over polish.
Shopify: No Transaction Fees With Shopify Payments
Shopify charges zero transaction fees when you use Shopify Payments (powered by Stripe). This is an important distinction: the no-fee benefit only applies when you use their payment system. If you use any other payment gateway, Shopify adds a 2% fee on Basic, 1% on Shopify, and 0.5% on Advanced.
Pricing
Basic: $39 per month. Shopify: $105 per month. Advanced: $399 per month. With Shopify Payments, processing fees are 2.9% plus $0.30 on Basic, 2.6% plus $0.30 on Shopify, and 2.4% plus $0.30 on Advanced. The lower processing rates on higher plans can save significant money at volume.
What Makes Shopify Stand Out
The largest app ecosystem in ecommerce with over 8,000 apps. Excellent ease of use and intuitive interface. 24/7 customer support. The most widely supported platform by third-party developers and agencies. Shopify Payments eliminates the need for a separate payment gateway setup.
The Catch
You only get zero transaction fees with Shopify Payments. If your business is in a country or industry where Shopify Payments is not available, or if you prefer a different payment processor, you will pay the additional 0.5% to 2% transaction fee. Also, many features that BigCommerce includes natively require paid apps on Shopify, which can add $50 to $300 per month to your costs.
Best For
Store owners who want the largest platform ecosystem and easiest setup, businesses in countries and industries where Shopify Payments is available, and high-ticket dropshipping stores (Shopify is my most recommended platform for this business model).
Ecwid: Free Plan With No Transaction Fees
Ecwid by Lightspeed offers a free plan that lets you sell up to 10 products with no monthly fees and no transaction fees. Paid plans also charge zero transaction fees.
Pricing
Free: $0 per month (up to 10 products). Venture: $25 per month (up to 100 products). Business: $35 per month (up to 2,500 products). Unlimited: $99 per month (unlimited products). No transaction fees on any plan.
What Makes Ecwid Stand Out
Ecwid can be embedded into any existing website, making it perfect for adding ecommerce to a WordPress site, Wix site, or any other web presence without rebuilding from scratch. The free plan is a genuine way to test ecommerce with zero financial risk. Multi-channel selling (Facebook, Instagram, Amazon) is available on paid plans.
The Catch
The free plan is very limited at 10 products with no digital goods support. The platform is less feature-rich than Shopify, BigCommerce, or WooCommerce for standalone stores. Design customization options are more limited. It works best as an add-on to an existing site rather than a primary ecommerce platform.
Best For
Small sellers testing ecommerce for the first time, businesses adding a shop to an existing website, and sellers who want multi-channel selling on a budget.
Square Online: Free Plan With No Subscription Fees
Square Online offers a free plan where you can build a store and sell products with no monthly subscription. Square charges only payment processing fees: 2.9% plus $0.30 for online transactions.
Pricing
Free: $0 per month (unlimited products, Square branding). Plus: $29 per month (custom domain, no Square branding). Premium: $79 per month (lower processing rates at 2.6% plus $0.30). No additional transaction fees on any plan beyond Square’s payment processing.
What Makes Square Online Stand Out
Seamless integration with Square’s POS system for businesses that sell both online and in physical locations. The free plan has no product limits, which is more generous than most free plans. Simple setup with AI-powered site builder that creates a store from your business information.
The Catch
You must use Square for payment processing (no alternative gateways). The free plan includes Square branding and a Square subdomain. SEO and customization options are more limited than dedicated ecommerce platforms. Advanced ecommerce features are minimal compared to Shopify or BigCommerce.
Best For
Businesses already using Square for in-person sales, small stores that want a free starting point, and sellers who prioritize simplicity over advanced features.
Cost Comparison Table
Here is how the cheapest no-transaction-fee plans compare for a store doing $100,000 in annual sales with average order value of $500.
BigCommerce Plus at $79 per month annual: $948 per year in platform costs, $0 in transaction fees, approximately $3,200 in payment processing. Total: approximately $4,148 per year.
Shopify Basic at $39 per month with Shopify Payments: $468 per year in platform costs, $0 in transaction fees, approximately $3,200 in payment processing. Total: approximately $3,668 per year.
Shift4Shop Free with Shift4 Payments: $0 per year in platform costs, $0 in transaction fees, approximately $3,200 in payment processing. Total: approximately $3,200 per year.
WooCommerce self-hosted: approximately $1,200 to $3,000 per year in hosting and extensions, $0 in transaction fees, approximately $3,200 in payment processing. Total: approximately $4,400 to $6,200 per year.
For comparison, Shopify Basic without Shopify Payments using a third-party gateway at 2% transaction fees would add $2,000 per year to the Shopify total, bringing it to approximately $5,668 per year. This shows how significant transaction fees become at volume. Setting up proper business formation from day one helps you track these costs correctly.
How to Choose the Right No-Fee Platform
If you want the best all-around ecommerce features with no transaction fees, go with BigCommerce. If you want the largest ecosystem and can use Shopify Payments, go with Shopify. If you want the absolute lowest cost and are in the US, try Shift4Shop’s free plan. If you want maximum control and technical flexibility, go with WooCommerce.
For high-ticket dropshipping specifically, I recommend Shopify with Shopify Payments for most of my clients. The ecosystem, reliability, and ease of use outweigh the slightly higher cost compared to free platforms. Our supplier guide shows how to maximize margins regardless of platform choice.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are transaction fees the same as payment processing fees?
No. Payment processing fees (charged by Stripe, PayPal, etc.) cover the cost of handling the credit card transaction and apply on every platform. Transaction fees are additional charges from your ecommerce platform. The platforms in this guide charge zero transaction fees, meaning you only pay your payment processor.
Why do some platforms charge transaction fees?
Platforms that charge transaction fees typically do so to incentivize use of their proprietary payment processing. Shopify, for example, waives transaction fees when you use Shopify Payments but charges 0.5% to 2% when you use other gateways. This business model lets them offer lower subscription prices while earning revenue from payment processing volume.
Can I negotiate payment processing rates?
Yes, once your monthly processing volume reaches $25,000 to $50,000, most payment processors will consider lower rates. Contact Stripe, PayPal, or your gateway directly to request volume discounts. On Shopify, higher-tier plans automatically include lower processing rates (2.4% on Advanced vs. 2.9% on Basic).
Is Shift4Shop really free with no catch?
The free plan genuinely has no monthly subscription fee and no transaction fees. The “catch” is that you must use Shift4 Payments as your payment processor, which charges standard processing rates. You also need to be a US-based business. The platform makes money from payment processing volume rather than subscriptions.
Which platform saves the most money for high-ticket stores?
For high-ticket stores with $1,000+ average order values, the transaction fee savings are most dramatic. A store doing $500,000 per year saves $5,000 to $10,000 annually by avoiding a 1% to 2% transaction fee. At this volume, the platform subscription cost becomes a small fraction of total fees, making the no-transaction-fee platforms (especially BigCommerce and Shopify with Shopify Payments) the clear winners.
Final Thoughts
Transaction fees are one of the most overlooked costs in ecommerce. A 1% to 2% platform fee does not sound like much, but on a $200,000 per year store, that is $2,000 to $4,000 going straight to your platform instead of your bottom line. Choosing a platform with no transaction fees is one of the simplest ways to improve your profitability.
