InMotion Hosting Review 2026: Is the Last Independent Host Worth It for Ecommerce?

Affiliate disclosure: This post contains affiliate links. If you buy through them, I may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Full disclosure

InMotion Hosting turned 25 years old in July 2026, and it is one of the last mass-market hosts still owned by the two guys who started it. That matters more than it sounds. I run Ecommerce Paradise, and hosting is one of the first real bills a new store owner signs up for. Most of the people I teach high-ticket dropshipping pick a host before they have made a single sale. Most of the names you recognize from 2015 now sit inside Newfold Digital or a private equity rollup, and the service usually gets worse after that happens. InMotion did not go that route. Here is my honest breakdown of whether that independence actually buys you anything, and where InMotion still falls short for an ecommerce store.

Get US-Based Support That Actually Answers the Phone

InMotion runs its own hardware, its own network, and an in-house support team, with plans from $3.19 a month and a 90-day money-back window on annual terms.

What InMotion Hosting Actually Is

InMotion Hosting launched in 2001 and is still run by co-founders Todd Robinson and Sunil Saxena. It serves more than 170,000 customers and, unusually for this price bracket, designs, owns, and operates its own servers and private network instead of reselling capacity from Amazon or Google.

Robinson put it bluntly in the company’s 25th anniversary announcement: “Twenty-five years in, we still answer to the people who run their infrastructure on our network, not to outside investors.” You can read the full statement in the PR Newswire release on InMotion’s 25 years of independent operation. Take the marketing language with the usual pinch of salt, but the underlying fact is verifiable and rare.

The product line runs from shared hosting through WordPress plans, VPS, reseller accounts, dedicated servers, and as of July 2026 a managed private cloud built on OpenStack.

I have run stores on shared hosting, managed VPS and managed cloud across fifteen years of doing this. The pattern never changes. You do not think about hosting at all until the day it breaks, and then it is the only thing in the business that matters. Keep that in mind when you are comparing a $3 plan against a $17 one.

InMotion Hosting Pricing and Renewal Reality

Every host in this category advertises an intro rate and bills you something else at renewal. InMotion is no exception, and the gap is wide enough that you should budget for the renewal number from day one.

Shared Hosting

The four shared tiers are Core, Launch, Power, and Pro. On a 12-month term, Core starts at $3.19 a month and renews at $10.99. Launch starts at $4.99 and renews at $13.99. Power also starts at $4.99 but renews at $17.99. Pro starts at $10.99 and renews at $24.99.

That is a renewal multiple of roughly 2.3x to 3.4x. Core is the only tier on plain SSD storage. Launch and above move to NVMe.

VPS Hosting

VPS 2 opens at $4.99 and renews at $13.99. VPS 4 gives you 4 vCPU, 8GB RAM, 160GB NVMe and 5TB bandwidth for $9.99, renewing at $16.99. From VPS 8 upward the renewal cliff gets steep: $19.99 becomes $46.99, and VPS 16 goes from $44.99 to $111.99.

Dedicated Servers

Here is the genuinely interesting one. Aspire runs $35 and renews at $49.99, but every tier above it has no renewal increase at all. Essential, Advanced, Elite, and Extreme all bill the same at renewal as they do on day one, from $189.98 up to $439.98 a month. Almost nobody in this market does that, and if you plan to stay put for years it changes the math considerably.

WooCommerce Plans

InMotion sells three WooCommerce tiers: Self Managed from around $10 a month, Fully-Managed Medium from around $200, and Enterprise from around $600. The company does not publish renewal pricing for these, which is worth confirming at checkout before you commit.

Core Features

US-Based In-House Support

This is InMotion’s strongest asset and the thing customers consistently pay for. Support is an in-house team, not an outsourced call center, with 24/7 live chat and tickets. One caveat the marketing does not lead with: phone support runs 9am to 9pm Eastern, Monday through Friday, not around the clock.

The 90-Day Money-Back Guarantee

InMotion advertises 90 days, which is triple what most hosts offer. Read the terms before you rely on it. The 90-day window applies only to billing terms of six months or longer. Monthly billing gets 30 days, and so does every dedicated server regardless of term. The company also adds that “restrictions and limitations may apply,” and add-on fees are generally not refundable.

Launch Assist

Launch Assist gives you two hours of a trained system administrator’s time to handle server configuration, site transfers, security setup, email config, and database optimization. It is included free on Reseller VPS, Managed VPS, Managed WordPress at 8GB RAM and above, and Standard plus Commercial Class dedicated servers. Bought separately it costs $199. For anyone migrating a live store who does not want to touch DNS at 2am, that is real value.

Free Domain, SSL, and Migration

You get a free domain for the first year on 12, 24, or 36-month terms, covering .com, .net, .org, .biz, .info and .us. Free AutoSSL is on every plan. Migration is free and covers files, databases, email settings, domain config and SSL, with a 24 to 48 hour turnaround on shared and WordPress plans.

Backups: Read the Fine Print

InMotion’s April 2025 shared hosting overhaul added free automated backups, but the company’s own wording is “included with select plans.” Independent testing by WebsitePlanet’s hands-on InMotion review found free backups on WordPress plans, with other tiers needing the paid Backup Manager add-on. For a store taking orders, treat backups as a mandatory line item rather than a bonus.

Skip the Migration Headache Entirely

Launch Assist hands you two hours of a real sysadmin to move your store, tune the server, and lock it down. Included free on managed VPS and dedicated, or $199 standalone.

Performance and Infrastructure

InMotion runs three data centers: Los Angeles, Ashburn in Virginia, and Amsterdam. That is US and EU coverage only, with nothing in Asia-Pacific. If a meaningful slice of your traffic sits in Australia, Singapore, or Japan, you are eating that latency and InMotion has no in-house fix for it.

Storage is NVMe on Launch, Power, Pro, every WordPress plan, all VPS tiers, and the Elite and Extreme dedicated servers.

On uptime, the company advertises a 99.99% guarantee for shared hosting following its April 2025 platform update. WebsitePlanet’s testing found that guarantee applies to the top three shared plans only, with no SLA on Core. The dedicated server SLA is the one that is genuinely credit-backed, with published tiers of 10%, 30%, and 100% of monthly fees depending on how far availability falls, claimable in writing within 60 days. The full terms and exclusions sit in InMotion’s dedicated server SLA document.

For measured performance, WebsitePlanet recorded 100% uptime during its test window, page loads of 1.2 to 1.5 seconds, and a GTmetrix grade A. HostScore’s August 2026 index puts InMotion fourth with a score of 81.19% and describes the performance as steady rather than chart-topping. That is a fair summary. It is competent, and it is not the fastest thing you can buy.

What Real Users Say

InMotion holds 4.5 out of 5 on Trustpilot across roughly 2,933 reviews. The distribution is worth looking at closely: 75% five-star and 16% one-star, with very little in between. That barbell shape usually means support quality varies rather than the product being uniformly average.

On the Better Business Bureau, InMotion carries an A+ rating and has been accredited since 2003. It logged 21 complaints across three years and 8 in the last twelve months. Set against 170,000 customers, that is a genuinely low complaint volume, and it is a much better showing than several competitors in this price range.

The praise is consistent and specific. Customers name individual support reps, describe complex issues getting resolved quickly, and stick around for years. WebsitePlanet’s tester reached a live chat agent in about a minute.

The complaints are equally specific. Support queues can stretch to an hour at peak times. Billing disputes come up repeatedly, including non-refundable add-on charges inside the guarantee window and disputed cPanel fees added to prepaid subscriptions. There is a BBB record of a three-day outage that drove a customer to migrate away.

One complaint pattern matters more than the others if you are running a store. InMotion bundles Monarx malware detection, and multiple customers report it deleting legitimate business files as false positives, with support unable to permanently whitelist them on shared hosting. On a live store running custom code, a security scanner quietly removing files is a revenue problem, not an inconvenience.

How InMotion Compares to the Rest of the Market

The honest comparison depends entirely on what you are optimizing for.

Host Best For Key Tradeoff
InMotion Hosting US and EU stores wanting in-house support and no PE ownership No Asia-Pacific data center
Cloudways Managed cloud with real scaling headroom No email hosting included
Bluehost First-time WordPress builders on a budget Steep renewal jump and heavy upsells
ScalaHosting Best price per resource on managed VPS Smaller brand, less name recognition
HostGator Cheapest entry point Newfold-owned, thinner support

Against Bluehost, InMotion wins on support quality and ownership structure and loses on brand familiarity. Against Cloudways, InMotion gives you email hosting and cPanel out of the box, which Cloudways does not, but Cloudways gives you far more room to scale and a global provider footprint.

If raw speed is your priority, WPX Hosting still beats InMotion in most head-to-head tests. If you want the cheapest managed VPS resources, ScalaHosting is hard to beat.

One Thing That Bothered Me

InMotion publishes three different sets of numbers for shared plan site limits and storage across its own website. The pricing page says Core allows 1 site, the shared hosting page says 2, and a company blog post says 2 while its own table says something else again. The same blog post contradicts itself on the Power plan within a single article.

None of that is fraud. It reads like stale marketing pages nobody reconciled after a plan restructure. But it means you should confirm the actual specs at checkout rather than trusting the feature grids, and it is a fair knock on a company that otherwise presents itself as the transparent alternative.

Is InMotion Hosting Right for a High-Ticket Store?

For a US or EU focused store, yes, at the right tier. The managed VPS or Fully-Managed WooCommerce plans give you dedicated IPs, Redis object caching, and an NGINX reverse proxy, which are the correct building blocks for a transactional site. At high-ticket average order values, a $200 a month hosting bill disappears against a single sale.

The support quality is the real reason to pick InMotion. When checkout breaks on a store selling $3,000 saunas, reaching a competent human quickly is worth more than shaving 200 milliseconds off a page load. If you are still deciding what you are going to sell, my high-ticket niches list is the place to start before you worry about infrastructure.

Skip InMotion if your audience is global, since three data centers with no Asia-Pacific presence and no confirmed bundled CDN is a real handicap. Skip the shared tiers entirely for a real store. Visitor caps of 50,000 to 500,000 a month, a 50,000 inode limit, and a 1024 MB/s I/O cap are fine for a blog and wrong for a store.

One more practical note. Hosting is only one line in the stack. Before you obsess over milliseconds, make sure your business formation and financial foundation is sorted. You also want real suppliers lined up before launch. A fast store with no approved suppliers is just a fast empty website.

What Changed in 2025 and 2026

InMotion has shipped more in the last two years than it did in the five before that, and some of it matters for store owners.

The April 2025 shared hosting overhaul was the big one. It added the 99.99% uptime guarantee, an advanced firewall, Monarx malware detection, MailChannels for email deliverability, and free automated backups on select plans, all delivered to existing customers at no extra cost. The full list is in the company announcement on the shared hosting upgrade.

In August 2025 a Pro tier arrived with WHM access, aimed at agencies running multiple client sites. September 2025 brought a standalone Professional Email product with 100GB of storage. UltraStack ONE landed in May 2025 as a rebuilt WordPress VPS stack running NGINX and Redis.

The newest launch is InMotion Cloud, announced in July 2026. It is a fully managed OpenStack private cloud positioned directly against AWS and Google Cloud, with dedicated hardware, zero egress fees, US data centers, and a results guarantee offering up to 50% additional resources if performance falls short of spec. The Explorer tier starts at $399 a month. For most store owners this is overkill, but it signals where the company is investing.

Email Hosting Is Actually Included

This sounds mundane until you compare it to the managed cloud hosts. Launch, Power and Pro include unlimited email addresses, with inbox sizes scaling from 5GB to 20GB depending on tier. Core is capped at 10 addresses at 1GB each. MailChannels handles deliverability and filtering.

Cloudways, by contrast, includes no email hosting at all and resells Rackspace mailboxes as a paid add-on. If you want your supplier correspondence coming from a real domain address without bolting on Google Workspace, InMotion saves you a line item and a setup afternoon. For a dropshipping operation where supplier approval often hinges on looking like a legitimate business, a working domain email is not a nice-to-have.

How to Pick the Right InMotion Plan

Most people overpay or underbuy here, so let me be direct about it.

If you are building a content site or a portfolio to establish authority before you launch a store, Launch at $4.99 introductory is enough, and you should budget $13.99 for renewal.

If you are running a live WooCommerce store doing real order volume, skip shared entirely and start at managed VPS. You want the dedicated IP, the Redis object caching, and the two hours of Launch Assist that come with it. VPS 4 at $9.99 introductory and $16.99 renewal is the sensible entry point.

If you are running multiple stores or handling client sites, the reseller tiers or a dedicated server make more sense, and the dedicated tiers above Aspire are the ones with no renewal increase. Over a three-year horizon that flat pricing can beat cheaper-looking competitors outright.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is InMotion Hosting owned by Newfold Digital or EIG?

No. As of July 2026 InMotion remains privately held under its original founding ownership, 25 years after launching in 2001. That makes it one of very few independent hosts left at this price point.

Is the 90-day money-back guarantee real?

Yes, but only on billing terms of six months or longer. Monthly billing and all dedicated servers get 30 days instead. Add-on fees are generally not refundable.

Does InMotion include free backups?

Only on select plans. Independent testing found free automated backups on WordPress plans, with other tiers requiring the paid Backup Manager add-on. Budget for it if you are running a store.

Does InMotion have data centers outside the US?

One, in Amsterdam. The other two are in Los Angeles and Ashburn, Virginia. There is no Asia-Pacific location.

Is InMotion good for WooCommerce?

At the managed tiers, yes. You get dedicated IPs, Redis object caching, NGINX reverse proxy, and payment gateway support for PayPal, Stripe and Authorize.net. The shared tiers are not suitable for a real store.

If You Would Rather Not Make This Call at All

Plenty of people reading this do not actually want to become a hosting expert. They want a store that works.

That is most of what my team does. The done-for-you store build and launch service covers the whole stack, hosting decisions included, so you are not spending your first week comparing renewal pricing tables instead of talking to suppliers.

If you would rather do it yourself but want a second opinion on your setup, book a free strategy call and we can look at it together.

Bottom Line

InMotion Hosting is a competent, honest host with unusually good human support and an ownership structure that has not been through the private equity meat grinder. The dedicated servers not raising prices at renewal is a genuine differentiator, and the low BBB complaint volume against 170,000 customers backs up the support reputation.

It is not the fastest host you can buy, it has no Asia-Pacific footprint, and the contradictory specs across its own pages mean you should verify what you are buying at checkout. If your store serves North America and Europe and you value reaching a real person when something breaks, it earns a place on your shortlist.

Ready to Put Your Store on Infrastructure You Own the Support For?

25 years independent, 170,000+ customers, A+ BBB rating, and dedicated servers that never raise your renewal price.
