At 5,000 contacts the cost jumps to around $100 per month, and at 10,000 contacts you are looking at about $150 per month. At 25,000 contacts, Klaviyo runs approximately $400 per month.

Mailchimp Pricing

Mailchimp has a free plan for up to 500 contacts with 1,000 sends per month. The Essentials plan starts at $13 per month for 500 contacts. At 5,000 contacts on the Standard plan, you are paying about $60 per month. At 10,000 contacts, the Standard plan costs around $100 per month. At 25,000 contacts, it runs about $230 per month.

The Real Cost Difference

Mailchimp is cheaper at every contact tier, sometimes significantly. At 10,000 contacts, you save $50 per month with Mailchimp. But here is the thing: cheaper does not mean better value. Klaviyo’s e-commerce features generate enough additional revenue through better automation and segmentation that the price difference pays for itself many times over for serious store owners.

If you are just starting out with very little budget, Mailchimp’s pricing is easier to justify. But once your store is generating consistent revenue, Klaviyo’s ROI makes the higher price a smart investment.

The pre-built flow templates cover every major e-commerce workflow including welcome series, abandoned cart recovery, post-purchase upsell, win-back campaigns, VIP customer rewards, and product review requests. Each template is designed specifically for e-commerce and can be customized to match your store’s needs.

Mailchimp Automation

Mailchimp’s automation covers the basics well. You can create welcome sequences, abandoned cart emails, birthday campaigns, and re-engagement flows. The visual builder is clean and intuitive. However, the e-commerce-specific triggers are more limited. Browse abandonment, predictive workflows, and advanced conditional logic based on purchase data are areas where Mailchimp lags behind Klaviyo.

For non-e-commerce automations like content marketing drip sequences or event-based campaigns, Mailchimp handles these fine. But for store owners who want their automations to react to detailed shopping behavior, Klaviyo is in a different league.

You can build segments like customers who spent over $2,000 in the last 6 months, subscribers who viewed outdoor kitchen products but have not purchased, contacts who opened your last 5 emails and have a predicted order date within 30 days, or first-time buyers who purchased over 60 days ago and might be ready for a repeat purchase.

These segments update in real time as customer behavior changes. The predictive analytics add another layer by forecasting customer lifetime value, next order date, and churn risk.

Mailchimp Segmentation

Mailchimp’s segmentation covers the basics including location, engagement level, signup source, and purchase history. You can create segments based on subscriber data and campaign activity. However, the behavioral segmentation is not as deep as Klaviyo’s. You cannot easily segment based on specific product views, browse abandonment patterns, or predictive metrics.

For general marketing segmentation (like targeting by location or engagement level), Mailchimp works fine. For e-commerce-specific segmentation that drives revenue, Klaviyo wins decisively.

Mailchimp’s Email Builder

Mailchimp has one of the most user-friendly email builders in the industry, with a large library of templates covering every use case. Deliverability

Both Klaviyo and Mailchimp maintain strong deliverability. Klaviyo’s focused user base (mostly e-commerce senders) helps maintain clean sending infrastructure. Mailchimp’s massive user base means more diverse traffic on their shared infrastructure, but they invest heavily in deliverability monitoring and enforcement.

For maximum deliverability on either platform, use a verification service like ZeroBounce to clean your list regularly and maintain proper authentication with SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records.

According to EmailToolTester’s annual analysis, both platforms perform well in deliverability testing, with Klaviyo showing particularly strong results for e-commerce senders.

SMS Marketing

Klaviyo includes built-in SMS marketing that integrates directly with your email campaigns and customer data. The SMS pricing is based on credits, with costs varying by country.

Mailchimp added SMS marketing more recently, and while the feature is functional, it is not as deeply integrated with e-commerce data as Klaviyo’s SMS offering. For stores that want a unified email and SMS strategy powered by the same customer data, Klaviyo’s approach is more cohesive.

Reporting and Analytics

Klaviyo’s reporting is built around e-commerce metrics: revenue per email, revenue per automation, customer lifetime value trends, and product performance. The dashboard shows you exactly how much money your email marketing is generating, which is the metric that matters most for store owners.

Mailchimp’s reporting covers campaign performance metrics (opens, clicks, bounces) and includes basic revenue tracking for connected e-commerce stores. The reports are clear and well-presented but not as e-commerce-focused as Klaviyo’s.

Which Platform for High-Ticket Dropshipping?

For high-ticket dropshipping stores, Klaviyo is the better choice in almost every scenario. High-ticket sales benefit from advanced segmentation, behavioral triggers, predictive analytics, and deep Shopify integration. These features help you nurture expensive purchases and maximize customer lifetime value.

The one exception is if you are in the very early stages with minimal budget and fewer than 500 contacts. In that case, starting with Mailchimp’s free plan and migrating to Klaviyo once your revenue supports it is a reasonable approach. But plan for the migration from day one so you are not surprised when you need to switch.

When to Choose Mailchimp Instead

Mailchimp is the better choice if your business is not purely e-commerce, you need a broader marketing platform with social media ads, landing pages, and content tools, your budget is very tight, or you value ease of use and a gentler learning curve above advanced e-commerce features.

If you run a content-focused business, a service business, or a hybrid business with an e-commerce component, Mailchimp’s broader toolset might serve you better than Klaviyo’s e-commerce-specific focus.

Setting Up Your Business Foundation
