Shopify’s pricing looks simple on the surface — three main plans, clear monthly fees, done. But the real cost of running a Shopify store goes well beyond the base plan price. Transaction fees, app subscriptions, themes, and add-ons can more than double what you actually pay each month. At Ecommerce Paradise, we’ve built hundreds of Shopify stores and know exactly what each plan actually costs in practice. This guide breaks it all down so you can budget accurately and choose the right plan from the start.
Shopify’s Three Core Plans
Basic Shopify — $39/month (annual) or $49/month (monthly)
Basic Shopify is the right starting point for most new dropshipping stores. It includes unlimited products, 2 staff accounts, basic analytics, discount codes, abandoned cart recovery, and all the core ecommerce features you need to launch and operate a real store. For a high-ticket dropshipping store doing $0-50,000/month in revenue, Basic covers everything you need.
The key limitation: Basic reporting is less detailed than higher plans, and the transaction fee when using third-party payment processors is 2% per transaction (on top of the processor’s own fees). Using Shopify Payments eliminates this additional transaction fee entirely — making Shopify Payments the strongly preferred payment method on Basic.
Shopify Plan — $105/month (annual) or $132/month (monthly)
The mid-tier Shopify plan adds professional reports, 5 staff accounts, and reduces the third-party transaction fee from 2% to 1%. For most dropshipping stores, the jump from Basic to Shopify is only worth it if you’re using third-party payment processors (the 1% fee reduction matters) or if you need the professional reporting for inventory or financial analysis. If you’re using Shopify Payments, stay on Basic until you genuinely need more staff accounts.
Advanced Shopify — $399/month (annual) or $499/month (monthly)
Advanced Shopify unlocks advanced custom reports, 15 staff accounts, third-party calculated shipping rates at checkout, and reduces the transaction fee to 0.5%. For a high-ticket dropshipping store, the custom reports and calculated shipping rates become valuable once you’re managing a large catalog with complex freight shipping requirements. Advanced is appropriate for stores doing $200,000+/month in revenue where the shipping rate accuracy and reporting depth generate meaningful business value.
Transaction Fees: The Most Misunderstood Shopify Cost
Shopify charges an additional transaction fee when you use a payment processor other than Shopify Payments. On Basic, that’s 2% per transaction. On the mid-tier plan, it’s 1%. On Advanced, it’s 0.5%. On top of whatever the third-party processor charges (typically 2.9% + $0.30).
On a $1,500 high-ticket order using a third-party processor on Basic Shopify: $1,500 x 2.9% + $0.30 (processor) + $1,500 x 2% (Shopify transaction fee) = $43.80 + $30.00 = $73.80 in fees. The same order with Shopify Payments: $1,500 x 2.9% + $0.30 = $43.80 total. The $30 difference on every $1,500 order adds up fast. Use Shopify Payments.
Real App Costs for a High-Ticket Dropshipping Store
The base Shopify plan doesn’t include several tools that a properly set up dropshipping store needs. Here’s what a realistic app stack costs:
Email marketing via Omnisend: Free up to 250 contacts. $16/month for up to 500 contacts. $59/month for up to 2,500 contacts. Live chat via Tidio: Free plan available. Paid from $19/month. Product reviews: Free options available (Shopify’s native reviews), paid from $15-30/month for more features. Inventory sync if needed: $20-50/month for multi-supplier automation via Inventory Source. Shipping automation for freight: Easyship from $29/month.
Realistic monthly app budget for a lean new store: $50-80. Established store with full toolkit: $100-200. Avoid adding apps you don’t need yet — many new store owners pay for 8-10 apps when they actually use 3.
One-Time Shopify Costs
Beyond monthly fees, here are the one-time costs to budget for when setting up a Shopify store:
Premium theme: $150-350 (one-time purchase). For high-ticket dropshipping, a quality premium theme is worth the investment — better conversion elements, more layout control, and a more professional appearance than most free themes. Domain name: $10-15/year through Namecheap. Logo design: $0-500 depending on whether you DIY with Placeit or hire a designer. SSL certificate: Included free with all Shopify plans.
Shopify Plan Comparison: Which One Is Right for Your Dropshipping Store?
For a new high-ticket dropshipping store: Start on Basic. Use Shopify Payments. Keep apps lean. Your total monthly cost is $39 (Shopify) + $50-80 (essential apps) + $6 (Google Workspace) = approximately $95-125/month before advertising. That’s the right lean-start budget while you’re validating your niche and getting your first supplier approvals. Check the high-ticket niches list to choose the right category for your first store.
Upgrade to the mid-tier plan when: you need more than 2 staff accounts (when you hire your first VA), or when you’re using a third-party processor and the 1% fee reduction saves you more than the $66/month plan difference. Upgrade to Advanced when: you’re doing significant volume, need custom reporting, or have complex freight shipping requirements that benefit from calculated rates.
FAQ: Shopify Pricing
Can I start with a free Shopify trial?
Yes. Shopify offers a free trial period that lets you set up your store, add products, and configure everything before you pay. Use the trial to get your store fully built before committing to a paid plan. Once you’re ready to accept orders, activate a plan. The business formation checklist covers everything you need to have in place before launching your Shopify store.
Is Shopify worth the cost compared to WooCommerce?
For high-ticket dropshipping, yes. Shopify’s managed infrastructure, reliable checkout, and ecommerce-specific feature set more than justify the cost versus the time investment of managing a WooCommerce/WordPress installation. The stores I build for clients through our done-for-you service are all on Shopify for this reason.
