Every high-ticket dropshipping business accumulates sensitive files that shouldn’t be sitting in someone else’s servers unencrypted. Supplier contracts. Bank account details. Customer data. Financial records. VA agreements. Business formation documents. The default cloud storage options (Google Drive, Dropbox, iCloud) store your files in a way that allows the provider to read them. If their servers are breached, or if they receive a legal demand, your files are potentially accessible.
Sync.com solves this with zero-knowledge end-to-end encryption on every plan, including the free tier. Files are encrypted on your device before they ever leave it. Sync.com cannot read your files. Not even if compelled by a court order. That’s the core value proposition.
Founded in 2011 and based in Toronto, Canada, Sync.com says on its about page that over 2 million individuals and businesses use its products, while the counter on that same page and the banner on its pricing pages say 2.7 million. Its plan tables list GDPR and PIPEDA compliance on every plan and HIPAA compliance on Solo 5TB and every team plan. It’s the go-to alternative for privacy-conscious users who want Dropbox-like functionality without sacrificing control over their data. This is an independent review covering how Sync.com works, pricing tiers, the honest speed and integration limitations, and who it’s right for.
What Is Sync.com?
Sync.com (sync.com) is a Canadian-based cloud storage, file sync, and collaboration platform built around zero-knowledge privacy as its defining feature. Unlike Google Drive or Dropbox, which encrypt files on their servers (meaning the provider can decrypt them), Sync.com encrypts files on your device before upload. Sync.com holds the encrypted data but never the decryption key. Only you can access your files.
This architecture, called client-side or zero-knowledge encryption, is the technical standard for genuinely private cloud storage. Sync.com implements it with AES-256-bit encryption, RSA-2048 key management, and TLS-secured transfer.
Sync.com’s plan tables list SOC 2 Type 1 compliance on every paid plan except Personal 150GB, GDPR and PIPEDA compliance on every plan, and HIPAA compliance on Solo 5TB and all team plans. Sync says it does not track, share or sell app usage data.
Pricing
Sync.com has replaced the plan line-up this review originally listed. Solo Basic, Solo Professional, Teams Standard and Teams+ Unlimited are no longer on its pricing pages. The plans below are what the US pricing pages list as of September 22, 2026, in US dollars. Most carry a 50% discount for the first year; the regular price is shown first, and the regular price is what you renew at. For the full plan-by-plan breakdown, see my Sync.com pricing guide.
Free, $0: 5 GB of storage, up to 3 active links with up to 20 downloads per link per day, up to 3 team shared folders, and 30-day file history. Password-protected links are included, but file requests, link expiry dates and view-only links are not.
Personal 150GB, $4/month billed monthly or $3.50/month billed annually ($42/year): 150 GB, 60-day file history, password-protected links. No advanced share controls, file requests or custom branding.
Personal 1TB, $16/month billed monthly or $12/month billed annually ($144/year), currently $8 and $6 ($72 for the first year): 1 TB, 90-day file history, expiry dates, download limits and view-only links. The pricing table lists file requests on this plan, but Sync’s help article on file requests names only its Pro Solo and Pro Teams plans.
Solo 5TB, $32/month billed monthly or $28/month billed annually ($336/year), currently $16 and $14 ($168 for the first year): 5 TB, 180-day file history, file requests, custom branding and HIPAA compliance.
Teams 1TB, 2TB and 10TB, $8, $12 and $18 per user per month billed monthly, or $6, $9 and $15 billed annually, currently half those prices for the first year: every team plan has a three-user minimum, and storage is per user. File history is 180 days on Teams 1TB and 365 days on Teams 2TB and 10TB. Custom branding and role-based access controls start at Teams 2TB, and Teams 10TB is the only plan on the pricing pages listing scheduled phone support.
Sync Enterprise, no published price: minimum 100 users, contact sales.
The pricing pages list a 30-day money-back guarantee, but Sync’s help center limits it to new purchases and excludes renewals, free trials, reactivations and upgrades, and the terms of service say unused services are not refunded. Paid plans renew automatically, and the terms say prices can change at renewal. Sync offers a 30-day free trial of its 1 TB and Teams 10 TB plans, which converts at the regular price. Payments accepted via Visa, Mastercard, American Express, PayPal and Discover.
Zero-Knowledge Encryption Explained
Zero-knowledge encryption means Sync.com has zero knowledge of what’s in your files. Your files are encrypted on your device using AES-256 before upload. The encryption key is derived from your password and never transmitted to or stored on Sync.com’s servers. When you access files, they’re downloaded encrypted and decrypted locally on your device. Sync.com’s servers contain only encrypted data they cannot read.
This differs from Google Drive and Dropbox, where encryption is applied at the server level, meaning the provider holds both the data and the decryption keys. End-to-end zero-knowledge encryption means not even a Sync.com employee, law enforcement request, or server breach can expose your files.
The practical implication: if you lose your password and haven’t enabled the email reset option, your files are permanently inaccessible. Keep your encryption credentials in a reliable password manager.
Key Features
Desktop sync: Native apps for Windows and macOS integrate with File Explorer and Mac Finder. A Sync folder in your home directory automatically syncs everything dropped into it across devices. External drives and folders outside the Sync folder cannot be included.
Sync Vault: Archive files to cloud-only storage, freeing up local device space. Files archived in Vault are not synced to your devices, so Vault works as pure cloud backup.
Sync CloudFiles: Files-on-demand functionality. Manage which files in your Sync folder are local and which are cloud-only. Access cloud-only files on demand without keeping them on your device.
Mobile apps (iOS and Android): Full mobile access with auto camera upload for automatic photo/video backup from your phone.
File versioning: 30 days on the free plan, 60 days on Personal 150GB, 90 days on Personal 1TB, 180 days on Solo 5TB and Teams 1TB, and 365 days on Teams 2TB and Teams 10TB. Account rewind restores your entire Sync account to a previous state, which is useful if ransomware or user error corrupts a large set of files.
Microsoft Office 365 integration: Open, edit, and save Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents directly within Sync without downloading. Requires an active Office 365 license. Slack integration also available.
File sharing: Share files and folders via link or email. Password-protected links are available on every plan, including free. Expiry dates, download limits and view-only links start at Personal 1TB, and the pricing table lists file requests (send a link for someone to upload files without seeing what others have submitted) from Personal 1TB upward, though Sync’s help center names only its Pro Solo and Pro Teams plans for that feature.
Document previews: Preview Office documents without downloading on paid plans. The free plan previews images, PDFs and text files, but not Office documents.
Team features (Teams plans): Every team plan needs at least three users. Teams 1TB includes the central admin console, centralized billing and user password management. Role-based access controls, 2FA enforcement, group-level folder management, admin delegation and file sharing governance start at Teams 2TB.
Custom branding (Solo 5TB, Teams 2TB and Teams 10TB): Replace the Sync logo with your company logo on shared links for a professional client-facing experience.
Sync.com for Ecommerce Entrepreneurs
Secure business file storage: Ecommerce entrepreneurs accumulate sensitive documents: LLC operating agreements, EIN documentation, bank account records, supplier contracts, authorized dealer agreements, customer data, and financial records. Storing these in Google Drive means Google can read them. Sync.com’s zero-knowledge architecture ensures only you can access them.
VA and team collaboration with access controls: EP community members who hire virtual assistants and remote team members need secure file sharing with granular permissions. Sync.com’s Teams 2TB and 10TB plans provide role-based access controls, 2FA enforcement, and group-level folder management, and every team plan has a three-user minimum.
Supplier document sharing: Share product specs, price lists, and marketing materials with suppliers via password-protected, expiry-dated links. The file request feature, listed from Personal 1TB upward, lets you receive documents from suppliers without giving them access to other files.
Regulatory compliance: Entrepreneurs serving EU customers or operating in healthcare-adjacent niches benefit from Sync.com’s GDPR compliance on every plan and its HIPAA compliance on Solo 5TB and the team plans. For formally structured businesses with compliance obligations, built-in regulatory adherence eliminates a separate compliance assessment.
Dropbox replacement: Sync.com’s Personal 1TB lists at $12 a month billed annually ($6 in the current first-year promo), and Solo 5TB at $28 a month ($14), both with end-to-end encryption. I have not re-verified Dropbox’s current prices for this update, so check them before you compare. Multiple Capterra reviewers specifically cite switching from Dropbox to Sync.com for cost savings.
What Real Users Say
According to Cloudwards’ comprehensive Sync.com review (updated April 2026), Sync.com is their recommended secure cloud storage service. The review highlights client-side encryption, Microsoft Office integration, advanced file sharing features, and affordable pricing as primary strengths. Slow speeds and lack of live chat support are cited as the main limitations. The review recommends Sync.com for anyone seeking an easy-to-use service offering both privacy and productivity on a budget.
According to Capterra’s verified Sync.com user reviews, most reviewers indicate good value for money with strong satisfaction around encryption, real-time backup, and data ownership. One Swiss business reviewer specifically notes that compliance with strict local regulatory requirements is easily met through Sync.com. The switching reason cited most often: cost versus Dropbox. Critical reviews relate primarily to customer service responsiveness (email-only experiences documented) and isolated data access issues in extreme cases.
According to Cyber Insider’s security-focused Sync.com review (February 2026), Sync.com’s zero-knowledge encryption using AES-256, RSA-2048, and TLS is genuinely robust. The encryption key is user-controlled and never stored server-side. The review confirms HIPAA, GDPR, and PIPEDA compliance as built-in rather than add-on features, which is meaningful for business users with regulatory obligations.
Pros and Cons
What I like about Sync.com:
Zero-knowledge encryption on all plans including the free tier is the headline feature. Google, Microsoft, Apple, and Dropbox all hold encryption keys. Sync.com doesn’t, and this is included by default, not an expensive add-on.
Solo Basic, the $8-a-month 2TB plan this review originally praised, has been replaced. The closest value picks now are Personal 1TB at $12 a month billed annually ($6 in the current first-year promo) and Solo 5TB at $28 a month for 5 TB ($14 in the promo). pCloud charges separately for zero-knowledge encryption; Tresorit charges more per TB. Sync.com includes encryption in the base price.
GDPR and PIPEDA compliance on every plan, and HIPAA compliance on Solo 5TB and all team plans. For businesses with regulatory obligations, the right plan removes a separate compliance layer.
Up to 365 days of file versioning on Teams 2TB and 10TB, 180 days on Solo 5TB and Teams 1TB, and 90 days on Personal 1TB. Account rewind for full account restoration is a meaningful safety net against ransomware or accidental deletion.
File requests feature (listed from Personal 1TB upward): send a link to suppliers, photographers, or VAs to upload files to you without giving them visibility into what others have sent.
Microsoft Office 365 integration enables document editing within Sync without downloading.
A 30-day free trial and a 30-day money-back guarantee, though Sync’s help center excludes free trials, renewals and upgrades from the guarantee, so a trial that converts to a paid plan is not refundable.
No third-party tracking and no data selling are explicit commitments.
What I’d flag:
Slower speeds than Dropbox or Google Drive. The encryption overhead adds noticeable latency, especially on large file transfers. Sync’s help center uses 40 Mbps only as a worked example (a 1 GB file in under five minutes before encryption overhead), not as a published speed cap. Multiple independent reviews consistently note this as the primary practical limitation.
Limited integrations by design. Outside of Microsoft 365, Slack, and Photoshop, there are no native connections to most productivity tools. This is intentional for security but limiting for workflow automation.
No Linux desktop app. Linux users must use the web interface.
Email-only support on most plans. No live chat. Scheduled phone support is listed only on Teams 10TB. Multiple users report slow response times.
Annual billing gets the best price, saving 12.5% to 25% against the monthly price depending on the plan. The current 50% discount covers only the first year, and renewals are at the regular price. Team plans need at least three users.
If you lose your password without email reset enabled, your files are permanently inaccessible. This is the inherent tradeoff of zero-knowledge encryption. Enable email reset or use a reliable password manager.
Sync.com vs Alternatives
| Service | Price | Zero-Knowledge | Storage | Compliance | Speed |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sync.com Personal 1TB | $12/mo annual ($6 first-year promo); no 2TB individual plan | Yes (all plans) | 1TB | GDPR, PIPEDA (HIPAA from Solo 5TB) | Slower |
| Dropbox Plus | Not verified in this update | No | 2TB | GDPR | Fast |
| Google One (2TB) | Not verified in this update | No | 2TB | GDPR | Fast |
| pCloud Premium | Not verified in this update | Extra-cost add-on (price not verified) | 2TB | GDPR | Fast |
| Tresorit Personal | $10.42/mo annual, per our Tresorit pricing breakdown | Yes | 500GB | HIPAA, GDPR | Moderate |
| iCloud (2TB) | Not verified in this update | No | 2TB | GDPR | Fast |
The Sync.com row’s plan, price, storage and compliance cells were checked on sync.com on September 22, 2026, and the Tresorit price matches our own Tresorit pricing breakdown. The other competitor columns have not been re-verified in this update. Sync.com’s strongest competitive position: zero-knowledge encryption on every plan including free, HIPAA compliance from Solo 5TB upward, and 1TB at $12 a month billed annually ($6 in the first-year promo). Dropbox and Google Drive are faster but don’t offer zero-knowledge encryption. pCloud is comparable in price but charges separately for encryption. Tresorit matches on security but offers less storage at higher prices.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Sync.com?
Sync.com (sync.com) is a Canadian cloud storage and file sync platform founded in 2011. Its about page says over 2 million individuals and businesses use it, and its pricing pages say 2.7 million. It offers zero-knowledge end-to-end encryption on all plans including free. Current US plans: Free (5GB), Personal 150GB ($3.50/mo annual), Personal 1TB ($12/mo annual, $6 in the first-year promo), Solo 5TB ($28/mo annual, $14 promo), and Teams 1TB, 2TB and 10TB ($6, $9 and $15 per user per month annual, three-user minimum). GDPR and PIPEDA on every plan, HIPAA on Solo 5TB and the team plans, SOC 2 Type 1 from Personal 1TB upward. 30-day money-back guarantee on new purchases only. Windows, macOS, iOS, Android and web apps. No Linux desktop app.
What is zero-knowledge encryption?
Zero-knowledge encryption means the service provider has zero knowledge of what’s in your files. Files are encrypted on your device before upload using AES-256. The decryption key is derived from your password and never transmitted to or stored on Sync.com’s servers. Sync.com holds only encrypted data they cannot read; not even their employees, law enforcement, or a data breach can expose your files. This differs from Google Drive and Dropbox, where the provider holds encryption keys and can theoretically access your data.
Is Sync.com slower than Dropbox?
Yes. The encryption overhead means Sync.com transfers files more slowly than Dropbox or Google Drive. Sync’s help center uses 40 Mbps only as a worked example, not as a published speed cap. For typical business documents and moderate-sized files, the difference is manageable. For very large files or high-volume transfers, the speed difference is noticeable. This is the primary practical tradeoff for the security benefit.
Does Sync.com work with Microsoft Office?
Yes. Sync.com integrates with Microsoft Office 365, allowing you to open, edit, and save Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents directly within your Sync account on desktop, mobile, or web, without downloading. An active Office 365 license is required. Slack integration is also available.
What happens if I forget my Sync.com password?
If you’ve enabled email-based password reset, you can recover access via email. If you’ve disabled email reset for maximum security, forgetting your password means permanent loss of access to your encrypted files, and Sync.com has no way to recover them. This is the inherent nature of zero-knowledge encryption. Enable email reset unless you have an extremely secure alternative, and always store your password in a reliable password manager.
Is Sync.com HIPAA compliant?
On some plans. Sync’s help center says Solo 5TB, the older Solo Professional 6TB and Solo Unlimited plans, and all Pro Teams plans include HIPAA compliance, and that Sync will sign a Business Associate Agreement on request once you have bought one of them. The free plan, Personal 150GB and Personal 1TB are not marked HIPAA compliant. GDPR (EU) and PIPEDA (Canada) compliance are listed on every plan.
My Verdict on Sync.com
Sync.com earns an 8.0/10 for privacy-conscious entrepreneurs, small business operators, and anyone who wants genuinely secure cloud storage without paying a premium for encryption.
The case is strong: zero-knowledge encryption on every plan, including free, with 1TB at $12 a month billed annually ($6 in the current first-year promo). GDPR and PIPEDA compliance on every plan, HIPAA from Solo 5TB upward, 90 to 365 days of file versioning on paid plans, and useful team collaboration features, all from a provider that says it does not track, share or sell your usage data.
The honest deductions: slower speeds vs Dropbox and Google Drive is the most significant practical limitation. Email-only support on most plans requires patience when things go wrong. No Linux desktop app. Team plans need at least three users, and the first-year discount ends at renewal. And the zero-knowledge model means password loss without email reset is permanent.
For ecommerce entrepreneurs storing sensitive business documents, sharing files with VAs and suppliers, or operating in industries with privacy compliance requirements, Sync.com is one of the most compelling cloud storage options available in 2026.
