Most people who land on NordLayer arrive expecting a business version of NordVPN with a team billing page attached. That is not what it is, and buying it for that reason is how you end up paying $95 a month to solve a problem a $4 consumer subscription already handled. I run Ecommerce Paradise, and the moment you hire your first two virtual assistants you inherit a security problem you did not have as a solo operator. That applies to anyone running high-ticket dropshipping with a remote team. NordLayer solves one specific piece of that problem extremely well and charges you a real amount of money for it. Here is the honest breakdown of whether it fits a store your size.
Stop Getting Locked Out of Your Own Shopify Admin
A dedicated fixed IP means your whole team hits Shopify, your payment processor, and your supplier portals from one address you can allowlist. Plans from $8 per user per month.
What NordLayer Actually Is
NordLayer is the business security product from Nord Security, the Lithuanian company behind NordVPN, NordPass and NordLocker. It launched in 2020 as NordVPN Teams and was renamed in 2021 because, in the company’s own words, “a VPN is now just one of the components in our full-fledged solution.”
The plain difference is this. Consumer NordVPN is a per-person privacy tool. You pick a server, your traffic gets encrypted, that is the whole product. NordLayer is a centrally administered access-control layer. It gives you an admin console, user provisioning that syncs with your directory, policy enforcement per device, and most importantly a fixed IP address that your other systems can recognize.
Privacy is not really the point. Controlling who reaches which company resource, from which device, is the point.
The Feature List That Matters
Dedicated IP servers give you an exclusive address for allowlisting, which is the single feature consumer NordVPN structurally cannot provide because its IPs are shared and rotating. Site-to-site VPN connects multiple locations. Zero Trust Network Access verifies every user and device before granting access to anything. Cloud Firewall handles network segmentation. Device Posture Security checks whether a machine meets your compliance rules and restricts it automatically if it does not.
Beyond that you get a browser extension, DNS filtering, Always On VPN, IP allowlisting, Cloud LAN, split tunnelling, and shared gateways across 40 or more locations. Clients exist for Windows, macOS, iOS, Android and Linux.
I have had VAs working across three countries at the same time. The number of times a contractor got locked out of an ad account or a supplier portal for logging in from a new residential IP is higher than I would like to admit. Each one costs you an afternoon, and it always happens on the day you are busiest.
NordLayer Pricing and the Number Nobody Quotes
NordLayer publishes four tiers, priced per user per month.
| Plan | Annual | Monthly | Minimum Seats |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lite | $8 | $10 | 5 |
| Core | $11 | $13.92 | 5 |
| Premium | $14 | $17.95 | 5 |
| Enterprise | Custom, from $6 | Custom | 200 |
Lite covers basic internet access security, web protection, VPN protocols, multi-factor authentication, activity monitoring, six devices per licence, and those 40-plus gateway locations. Core adds network access control, Cloud Firewall, Device Posture Security, split tunnelling, the site-to-site connector, Cloud LAN, the browser extension, DNS filtering, and a dedicated account manager. Premium adds up to 60 Virtual Private Gateway locations and custom configurations.
The $40 Line Item
Here is the number most reviews skip. A server with a dedicated IP costs an additional $40 a month, and NordLayer lists it as required for both Core and Premium.
That changes the math completely. If the dedicated IP is why you are buying NordLayer, and for most ecommerce operators it is, then your real floor is five seats on Core plus the dedicated server. That works out to $95 a month on annual billing, or roughly $1,140 a year. On monthly billing it is $109.60.
Lite at five seats is $40 a month and looks affordable, but Lite does not include the tier features that make NordLayer worth buying. Security.org’s assessment of NordLayer puts it bluntly: the Lite plan “doesn’t offer much more than NordVPN but costs more.”
There is no free tier. You get a 14-day money-back guarantee, which is a refund window rather than a trial.
Core Features
Security and Compliance
NordLayer supports IKEv2, OpenVPN over both UDP and TCP, and NordLynx, which is Nord’s fork of WireGuard. Encryption is AES-256 end to end.
On certifications, the claims hold up. Nord Security confirmed in October 2024 that NordLayer passed both ISO/IEC 27001:2022 and SOC 2 Type 2 audits, documented in the Nord Security press release on its business suite audits. NordLayer’s help documentation adds that independent assessors confirmed its policies meet the security objectives of the HIPAA Security Rule.
Single sign-on and user provisioning work with Entra ID, Okta, OneLogin, JumpCloud and Google Workspace. Multi-factor authentication is included even on Lite.
The Offboarding Argument
This is the feature nobody markets hard enough and it is probably the strongest reason for a small operation to buy. When a virtual assistant leaves, you currently have to remember every tool they touched and rotate every shared credential. With SSO and SCIM provisioning wired up, you revoke access once and it propagates.
If you are running the kind of operation I describe in my guide to outsourcing Shopify store operations to virtual assistants, contractor turnover is normal and credential hygiene is usually the first thing that slips. Centralised revocation is worth more than the marketing gives it credit for.

Where NordLayer Falls Short
The five-seat minimum applies to every standard plan. A two-person operation pays for five whether it wants to or not.
The server footprint is much smaller than the consumer product. NordLayer offers 40 or more gateway locations, rising to 60 Virtual Private Gateway locations on Premium. Consumer NordVPN, by comparison, has been reported at 211 global server locations. TechRadar’s NordLayer review notes that more server locations would be desirable and observed speed drops in Asian countries during testing.
That last detail matters a great deal if your team is in the Philippines, Indonesia or Vietnam, which for a lot of dropshipping operations it is. Test it inside the 14-day window before you commit to an annual term.
NordLayer is also not a complete security solution, and it is worth being clear-eyed about that. It covers the network side well. It does not do endpoint protection, which is exactly why CrowdStrike Falcon is sold as an add-on at $2 or $9 per device per month. Security.org lists missing incident response planning, employee training, and auditing capability. Calling NordLayer full SASE would be inaccurate.
Device licences cap at six per user. And a large chunk of the feature set sits behind Core, leaving Lite as essentially a managed business VPN with MFA attached.
What Real Users Say
NordLayer holds 4.3 out of 5 across 127 reviews on G2’s NordLayer profile, and 4.6 out of 5 across 34 reviews on Capterra. There is no Trustpilot listing for NordLayer, so ignore any review claiming to quote one.
The praise is consistent. Reviewers repeatedly describe the admin console as genuinely simple, setup as fast, and performance as reliable with minimal speed penalty. Cloud integration with AWS, Google Cloud and Azure gets specific mentions.
The complaints are just as consistent, and two of them are worth weighing seriously. The most frequently repeated technical issue is occasional connection drops that require restarting the app or rebooting the machine. The second is support inconsistency, praised during sales and onboarding, criticised when something actually breaks in the backend.
The third recurring theme is pricing, and it clusters specifically around scaling. The jump from Lite to Core plus the $40 dedicated server is where users report sticker shock, which lines up exactly with the math above.
NordLayer Compared to the Alternatives
The comparison most people actually need is not NordLayer versus another business VPN. It is NordLayer versus just buying consumer licences and being disciplined about it.
| Option | Roughly Costs | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| NordLayer | $95/mo at 5 seats on Core plus dedicated IP | Teams needing a fixed IP and central access control |
| NordVPN | A few dollars per user monthly | Encrypting team browsing on public Wi-Fi |
| Surfshark | Budget tier, unlimited devices | Solo operators and small teams on one account |
| IPRoyal | Pay as you go proxies | Competitor research and price monitoring, not team access |
If what you actually want is encrypted browsing for a small remote team, NordVPN does that at a fraction of the price and you should not be upsold into NordLayer. If you want unlimited device coverage on a tight budget, Surfshark is the better value.
If you are doing competitor and supplier research at scale rather than securing team access, that is a different tool entirely and IPRoyal covers it more cheaply.
What Changed in 2026
The notable development is NordLayer Browser, launched on 1 April 2026. It bundles shadow IT management, data loss prevention, SaaS access control and zero-trust browsing, priced separately at $3, $5 and $7 per user per month across its own Lite, Core and Premium tiers.
The strategic signal is more interesting than the product. The launch announcement explicitly targets small and medium businesses, defined as companies up to 200 employees and up to $25 million in revenue. NordLayer is moving down-market, not up. You can read the positioning in the NordLayer Browser launch announcement.
For context on the parent company, Nord Security raised $100 million in September 2023 at a $3 billion valuation led by Warburg Pincus, having bootstrapped for over a decade before taking outside capital.
Who Should Actually Buy This
Let me be direct, because the honest answer depends heavily on your size.
Buy NordLayer if you have somewhere between five and fifty people touching your systems, and if IP-based lockouts are costing you real time. The scenario it fixes is specific: contractors across multiple countries logging into your store admin, your payment processor, your ad accounts and your supplier portals from constantly changing residential IPs, triggering fraud flags, verification loops and lockouts. A fixed IP ends that, and consumer VPNs cannot deliver it.
Do not buy NordLayer if you are a solo operator with two part-time VAs and thin margins. At roughly $95 a month you are paying for five seats and an enterprise-grade fixed IP to solve a problem two people have. That money does more for you in ad spend or inventory. Once your niche is proven and the team is growing, revisit it.
Do not buy it if your actual need is encrypted browsing on hotel Wi-Fi. That is consumer NordVPN and it costs a fraction as much.
One thing worth saying plainly: securing team access is a problem you earn by growing. If you are still working out which suppliers will approve you, that comes first. So does sorting your business formation and legal foundation. Network security is a real concern for a real business, not a substitute for building one.
Setting NordLayer Up Without Wasting the Trial Window
The 14-day money-back window is short, and most people burn it installing the app and calling it tested. Here is the order I would actually work through.
Start by wiring up single sign-on before you invite anyone. If you already run Google Workspace, that is the fastest path, and it means every account you create afterwards is revocable from one place rather than becoming another orphaned login.
Next, buy the dedicated server and get the IP allowlisted on the systems that actually lock you out. In practice that is your store admin, your payment processor, your ad accounts and any supplier portal that has ever emailed you a verification code. This is the step that proves whether the $40 a month is worth it.
Then have every team member connect from their real working location at their normal working hours. Do not test from your own laptop on good home Wi-Fi and assume it generalises. If your VAs are in Manila or Ho Chi Minh City, that is where the test has to happen, because that is where the reported speed drops show up.
Finally, run an offboarding drill. Deactivate a test account and confirm access actually disappears everywhere it should. If that works cleanly, you have bought yourself a genuine process improvement rather than another subscription.
The Compliance Angle Most Store Owners Ignore
There is a second reason to consider NordLayer that has nothing to do with convenience, and it becomes relevant as soon as you sell into regulated categories or take on B2B customers.
If you are selling medical, mobility or recovery equipment, or invoicing businesses rather than consumers, you will eventually be asked how you protect customer data. Having ISO 27001 and SOC 2 Type 2 audited infrastructure in your stack, with documented device policies and access controls, turns that conversation from an awkward improvisation into a short answer.
The same applies if you ever want to work with larger suppliers or distributors. Procurement teams at established brands increasingly send security questionnaires before they approve a new dealer, and “everyone uses their own laptop and we share a password in a spreadsheet” is not a winning response. That is a real commercial reason to have this in place, separate from the day-to-day convenience of a fixed IP.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is NordLayer just NordVPN for businesses?
No. NordLayer is a centrally managed access-control platform with an admin console, directory sync, device policy enforcement and dedicated fixed IPs. Consumer NordVPN cannot provide a fixed IP because its addresses are shared and rotating.
What does NordLayer actually cost for a small team?
Five seats on Core at annual billing is $55 a month, plus the required $40 dedicated server, giving a realistic floor of $95 a month or about $1,140 a year.
Is there a free trial?
No. There is a 14-day money-back guarantee, which is a refund window rather than a trial. Test performance for your team’s actual locations inside that window.
Is NordLayer SOC 2 certified?
Yes. Nord Security confirmed in October 2024 that NordLayer passed both ISO/IEC 27001:2022 and SOC 2 Type 2 audits.
Will it work well for VAs in Southeast Asia?
Test it first. NordLayer runs 40 to 60 gateway locations against consumer NordVPN’s 211, and independent testing has observed speed drops in Asian countries.
The Real Fix Is Usually Process, Not Software
Worth saying plainly, because a tool will not save you from a bad system. Most access problems I see with client stores come down to shared logins, no offboarding checklist, and nobody owning the list of who has access to what.
Fix that first and you may find you do not need NordLayer yet. Systems and processes are the thing that scales, not subscriptions.
If you want help building those systems properly, that is a core part of what my team handles inside the done-for-you build and management service. You can also book a free strategy call if you just want to talk through how you are set up.
Bottom Line
NordLayer is a well-built product with real audits behind it, a genuinely simple admin console, and one feature that no consumer VPN can replicate. The fixed IP plus centralised offboarding combination solves an expensive, annoying problem that hits every ecommerce operation the moment it stops being one person.
It is also priced for a company larger than most people reading this. The five-seat minimum and the $40 dedicated server surcharge mean the entry cost is closer to $95 a month than the $8 headline suggests. Know which problem you are solving before you buy, and if the answer is just encrypted browsing, buy the consumer product instead.
