Best Portable Power Station for Job Sites and Contractors in 2026: Sized on Tool Startup Surge, Not Nameplate

Almost every “best portable power station” list is written for a camper. The buyer it imagines wants to run a fan, a fridge and some lights for two nights, so the whole list is ranked on battery capacity in watt hours. That ranking is close to useless on a job site.

A contractor’s problem is not how long the box lasts. It is whether the box starts the tool at all. A circular saw, a compressor, a mitre saw and a chop saw all pull a spike of current at the instant the trigger closes, and a power station that cannot supply that spike will trip and shut off no matter how many watt hours are sitting inside it. So this list is ranked on continuous AC output first, surge headroom second, recharge rate third, and published durability fourth. Capacity is the last column, not the first.

Every figure below came off the manufacturer’s own product page on 9 September 2026. Where a manufacturer does not publish a number, I say “not published” rather than guessing, and there are two places on this page where that happens.

Size on Startup Surge, Not on Watt Hours

The Apex 300 delivers 3,840 W continuous with 7,680 W lifting power and recharges to 80 percent in 45 minutes at 3,840 W input, listed at $1,499 on Bluetti’s own page. That is the only unit in the Bluetti line that will not blink at a compressor and a saw on the same circuit.

The Number That Actually Decides This: Startup Surge

An induction motor draws far more current on startup than it does running. Bluetti says this itself, in the FAQ on its own AC70 product page, warning buyers not to run an air conditioner or a washing machine on that unit because built-in motors and compressors “may have a surge power of 2 to 4 times the rated power, which may exceed the output of AC70”. That is the manufacturer telling you the sizing rule.

Apply that multiplier to a job site and the arithmetic gets uncomfortable fast. A 1,500 W compressor with a 3x startup multiplier wants roughly 4,500 W for a fraction of a second. A unit rated at 1,800 W continuous will not deliver that, and it does not matter that it has 1,152 watt hours in the pack.

This is why the tables below lead with continuous output and surge, and why the honest answer for a lot of trades buyers is a bigger and more expensive unit than the watt hour comparison charts suggest.

Lifting Power Is Not the Same as Surge, and Both Get Misquoted

Bluetti publishes two different overload figures on different models and they mean different things. Power Lifting Mode reduces voltage to run high-power resistive loads such as heaters and kettles above the rated output. Surge power is the momentary peak the inverter tolerates.

Resistive loads are heaters, kettles and hair dryers. Motors are not resistive. Bluetti’s own description of Power Lifting Mode on the AC180 page names “space heaters, hair dryers, electric kettles, electric blankets” as the target loads, and does not name motors. So do not buy lifting power expecting it to start a compressor. Buy continuous output for that, with surge as the margin.

Read this one first. Every figure is the manufacturer’s own, retrieved 9 September 2026.

One correction since this list was first built. The Goal Zero Yeti 1000 used to sit in these tables at $1,199.95 with 998.4 Wh. It is not published on goalzero.com any more. On 9 September 2026 the portable power stations collection lists the Yeti 300, Yeti 500, Yeti 700, Yeti 1500, Yeti PRO 4000 and Yeti PRO 8000, and the Yeti 1000 product page returns a 404. I have pulled it out of every table on this page rather than quote a price the manufacturer no longer publishes. The nearest published models either side of it are the Yeti 700 at $699.95 and the Yeti 1500 at $1,499.95.

Note where the Goal Zero Yeti 700 lands. At $699.95 it delivers 600 W continuous, which is less than the $359 Bluetti AC70. If your load list has a single power tool on it, that is the difference between working and not working, and it has nothing to do with the size of either battery.

The Picks, By What You Are Actually Plugging In

1. A Crew With a Compressor: Bluetti Apex 300, $1,499

This is the only unit in the Bluetti range I would put on a site with a compressor running. 3,840 W continuous, 7,680 W lifting power, and outlets that matter for trades work: four 20A AC outlets, a NEMA TT-30R, and a NEMA 14-50R rated 120/240V at 50A. That last one is the reason it belongs in this article rather than in a camping one.

Cycle life is 6,000 or more cycles to 80 percent of original capacity, per Bluetti’s own tech specs, and the warranty on the spec table is 5 years. It weighs 83.78 lbs, which is a two-person lift or a cart, and that is the honest cost of the output.

Recharge is the other reason it wins here. Bluetti lists turbo charging at 3,840 W maximum with 80 percent in 45 minutes, and AC input at 120V, 15A maximum with 1,800 W maximum on bypass. On a site that means it refills over lunch off a generator or a wall circuit.

2. Two Tools and a Site Radio: Bluetti Elite 200 V2, $849

The value pick, and the one most single-operator trades buyers should look at. 2,600 W continuous, 3,900 W lifting, 2,073.6 Wh, and 6,000 or more cycles to 80 percent of original capacity, which is the same cycle floor as the units costing twice as much.

Bluetti publishes an appliance row on this model’s page that no camping-oriented unit bothers with: an 800 W electric hammer for 2 hours. That is 1,600 Wh reaching the tool from a 2,073.6 Wh pack, which is 77 percent of nameplate, and it is the most job-site-relevant runtime figure Bluetti publishes anywhere.

53.4 lbs, 1,800 W maximum AC input, 1,000 W maximum solar, 5 year warranty. For $849 that is a lot of usable output.

3. A Full Day Without a Recharge: Bluetti Elite 400, $1,799

3,840 Wh is the largest single-unit capacity Bluetti sells in this format, with 2,600 W continuous, 3,900 W lifting and 5,200 W surge, nine outlets, and a 15 ms UPS switching time. Bluetti lists AC and solar together reaching 80 percent in 70 minutes, and AC alone reaching 80 percent in 1.9 hours and full in 2.5 hours.

One honest gap. The Elite 400 tech spec table on Bluetti’s own page lists battery type as LiFePO4 and does not publish a cycle life figure. Every other unit in this article publishes one. I am not going to borrow the Elite 300’s 6,000 cycle number and pin it on a different pack, so treat the Elite 400 cycle life as not published and factor that into a purchase you expect to amortise over years.

It is also 85.98 lbs, the heaviest thing here apart from the Yeti PRO 4000. It has wheels and a telescoping handle, which is the right design for a site, but it is not going up a ladder.

4. Sensitive Gear and RV Style Hookups: Bluetti Elite 300, $1,099

2,400 W continuous, 4,800 W surge, 3,014.4 Wh, and a UPS switching time of 10 ms or less. If you run a laptop, a survey instrument, a security camera or a site office on the same box that runs tools, that switching time is the spec that matters when the generator hiccups.

It also carries a NEMA TT-30 and a 12V/30A DC port, 1,800 W AC input, 1,200 W solar input, 6,000 or more cycles to 80 percent capacity, 5 year warranty, and 57.98 lbs. That is a genuinely good middle of the range unit for a mixed load.

5. One Tool, Tight Budget: Bluetti AC180, $499

1,800 W across four 120V/15A outlets, 2,700 W surge, 1,152 Wh, 3,500 or more cycles to 80 percent original capacity, 35.27 lbs, 5 year warranty. Charges at 1,440 W in turbo mode, which Bluetti puts at roughly 1.3 to 1.8 hours to full.

1,800 W runs a corded drill, a sander, a jigsaw, a router or a small mitre saw one at a time. It will not start a compressor and Bluetti does not claim it will.

The AC180 also has the most useful published runtime data in the Bluetti line, because its product page includes appliance rows at real wattages. A 1,800 W heater for 0.5 hours, a 1,560 W electric grill for 0.6 hours, a 1,300 W hair dryer for 0.7 hours and a 600 W microwave for 1.5 hours all land between 900 and 936 Wh reaching the load, which is 78 to 81 percent of the 1,152 Wh nameplate. That is the real conversion penalty, published by the manufacturer, and it is why you should never plan a day on nameplate watt hours.

6. Trim, Finish and Low Draw Only: Bluetti AC70, $359

1,000 W continuous, 2,000 W lifting, 1,500 W surge, 768 Wh, 3,000 or more cycles to 80 percent original capacity, 22.5 lbs, 20 ms UPS, 5 year warranty, and 850 W turbo charging that Bluetti puts at 45 minutes to 80 percent.

This is a brad nailer compressor’s worst nightmare and a trim carpenter’s friend. Chargers, lights, a laptop, a small vacuum, a corded drill. Bluetti’s own FAQ on this page tells you not to run motor loads like an air conditioner or a washing machine on it, and I would extend that warning to anything with a compressor in it.

Where Goal Zero Beats Bluetti, and It Is Not Close

Durability is the one job-site criterion where the published specs run against the brand this site earns on, so here it is plainly.

Goal Zero publishes an ingress protection rating. Bluetti does not publish one on any current portable model I could retrieve. The Yeti 300, Yeti 500, Yeti 700 and Yeti 1500 all carry an IPX4 water resistance rating on their own product pages, and Goal Zero states those units also pass testing for particulates and UL2743 requirements, with vibration testing on the 1500. The Yeti 1500 page describes durable construction and port shields that keep rain and mud out.

I pulled the Bluetti tech spec tables for the AC70, AC180, Elite 200 V2, Elite 300, Elite 400 and Apex 300 and none of them carries an IP field. The Apex 300 marketing copy says the unit is “military-grade tested (MIL-STD-810G)”, but the certification field on the same page lists FCC, UL, TELEC, CE, NTC, RCM, LOA and ICASA, and no ingress rating. The only Bluetti page I found with an IP65 rating was the Pioneer 150, model AC240, and that page is titled as discontinued.

If your box lives in the open bed of a truck, gets rained on, and sits in concrete dust all week, that is a real difference and it favours Goal Zero. If it lives in a van and comes out under cover, it matters much less. Decide which one you are before you weight it.

Where Bluetti Beats Goal Zero, and It Is Also Not Close

Cost per delivered kilowatt hour, by a factor of three or four.

The honest metric in this category is not dollars per watt hour, because that ignores how many times you can refill the pack. It is the price divided by the energy the unit will actually deliver over its rated cycle life, plus the electricity you put into it. I use 85 percent inverter efficiency throughout, which is not my assumption, it is Bluetti’s: the AC180 FAQ states that for that unit “DoD is 90%, η is 85%, and self-consumption is about 15W”.

The electricity term is 17.30 cents per kilowatt hour, the 2025 United States annual average residential price from EIA Table 5.3 in the Electric Power Monthly, divided by the same 85 percent, which gives 20.4 cents per delivered kilowatt hour. Note that the same EIA table puts 2026 year to date at 18.16 cents, so this figure is conservative and rising.

Read the bottom half of that table before you buy anything. Every one of these units delivers energy at well above the grid price. A power station is not a device that saves you money on electricity. It is a device that buys you availability where a cord will not reach and a gas generator is not allowed. Anybody selling these as a way to cut a power bill is wrong, and a reader with a calculator will catch them.

2,600 W Continuous for $849 Is the Value Line in This Category

The Elite 200 V2 lists at $849 with 3,900 W lifting power and 6,000 or more cycles to 80 percent of original capacity, which works out to about 8.0 cents per delivered kWh before electricity. Bluetti’s own page runs an 800 W electric hammer on it for 2 hours.

Recharging on Site, Which Is the Spec Nobody Compares

A camper recharges overnight. A contractor recharges at lunch, off a generator, or off the van while driving between two jobs. That makes AC input rate a first-class spec on a site and an afterthought everywhere else.

Two practical notes. A 1,800 W input on a 15A circuit is essentially the whole circuit, so if you are charging off a site outlet you are not also running a saw on that breaker. And Goal Zero ships its units in low input mode by default, stating in its own FAQ that you have to change a setting on the unit to get the fast rate.

Vehicle charging is the weak link across the whole category. Bluetti lists the AC180 at roughly 12 to 12.5 hours from a 100 W car outlet and 6.3 to 6.8 hours at 200 W. Goal Zero puts the Yeti 1500 at 13.6 hours on a 10A car charger. Nobody refills a big pack on a drive between jobs without a dedicated alternator charger, which is a separate purchase on both brands.

What the Warranties Actually Say

This is where the two brands diverge in a way the spec sheets hide.

Goal Zero’s warranty page states a 5 year warranty covering its sixth generation Yeti power stations by name, including the Yeti 1500, Yeti PRO 4000, Yeti 700, Yeti 500 and Yeti 300. That is one flat number across the current line. The same page directs all international warranty service to the authorised retailer you bought from.

Bluetti’s warranty policy page states that for portable power stations “the warranty period varies from 24 months to 72 months”, and that period “may vary by country subject to local laws and regulations”. Individual product pages then list 5 years for the models in this article. More important for anyone who moves: Bluetti states that “the limited warranty is restricted to the country of purchase” and “will be invalid on the items once they are taken or shipped to other countries”.

If you buy in the United States and stay there, that clause never bites. If you are the kind of operator who buys equipment in one country and works in another, read it twice before you spend $1,499.

Runtime, Computed Honestly

Usable watt hours are not nameplate watt hours. Using Bluetti’s own 85 percent inverter figure, here is what you are actually working with.

A 600 W sustained draw is a conservative stand-in for a working day, because tools are intermittent. Size the surge on the peak and the capacity on the average, and do not confuse the two.

What None of These Will Do

Three honest limits, because a list that only says yes is not useful on a job site.

A large stationary compressor, a welder above light duty, or a 240V machine tool is out of scope for every unit here except the Apex 300, which is the only one with a NEMA 14-50R rated 120/240V at 50A. Even then, check the startup draw on the machine’s own data plate against 7,680 W of lifting power before you assume.

Running a full day of framing off any single unit is unrealistic. A crew doing production work needs a generator, shore power, or two units and a charging plan.

Cold cuts into all of it. Bluetti lists a charging temperature range starting at 32 degrees Fahrenheit on every unit here, so on a frozen site you can discharge but may not be able to charge. Goal Zero states its Yeti units are usable down to minus 4 degrees Fahrenheit for discharge. Neither brand publishes a derated capacity curve by temperature.

Running the Business Behind the Store

If you are reading this because you sell this equipment rather than because you swing a hammer, the same discipline applies to the store as to the sizing. Get the category right first.

The operating stack is small. Most of these stores run on Shopify. The entity is commonly formed through Bizee, which keeps the paperwork in one place.

One tax note for the contractor rather than the retailer. Equipment bought for a business is a capital purchase with its own treatment, and the software you file it in matters less than getting the treatment right. Frequently Asked Questions

Will a 2,000 W unit start a 1,500 W compressor?

Maybe, and the honest answer is that it depends on the compressor. Using Bluetti’s own guidance that motors and compressors can draw 2 to 4 times rated power on startup, a 1,500 W compressor could want anywhere from 3,000 W to 6,000 W for a moment. Check the locked rotor amps or the startup wattage on the compressor’s own data plate and compare it to the unit’s surge figure, not its continuous figure.

Can I run two power stations in parallel to get more output?

On some models and not others, and the accessories are extra. Bluetti lists a parallel option on the Apex 300 through its Hub A1 package and expansion up to six B300K batteries per unit, but expansion batteries add capacity rather than output. Do not assume two units chained together give you double the continuous watts unless the manufacturer says so for those specific models.

Is IPX4 enough for a job site?

IPX4 covers splashing water from any direction and says nothing about dust, which is why Goal Zero separately states that its units pass testing for particulates. It is not a rating that means you can leave one in the rain overnight or hose it down. It means an unexpected shower will not kill it. Bluetti does not publish an equivalent rating on any current portable model, so on this specific criterion you are choosing between a published number and an absence of one.

How many years will one of these actually last?

Divide rated cycles by how often you fully cycle it. A unit rated at 6,000 cycles used hard four days a week is decades of cycles, which means calendar ageing and the warranty period decide the outcome long before cycle count does. The cycle rating matters more for the cost per delivered kilowatt hour calculation than as a literal prediction of lifespan.

Why does every cycle number need a capacity floor attached?

Because a cycle count without a floor is meaningless. Bluetti rates its units to 80 percent of original capacity and Goal Zero rates the current Yeti line to 80 percent of original capacity, so those two are directly comparable, which is unusual in this category. Other brands publish counts measured to 70 percent or even 50 percent, and those numbers look bigger while describing a worse battery. Always ask “to what capacity” before comparing two cycle ratings.

Is a gas generator still the better buy for a site?

On pure cost per kilowatt hour, usually yes, and this article is not going to pretend otherwise. What a battery buys you is silence, indoor and enclosed-space use, no fuel handling, no exhaust, and compliance with noise ordinances and site rules that increasingly ban engines. If none of those constraints apply to your work, price a generator honestly before you spend $1,499 here.

Bottom Line

Rank on continuous output and surge, not on watt hours, and most of this category sorts itself out. The Apex 300 at $1,499 is the only Bluetti unit I would put next to a compressor, and its 3,840 W with a 120/240V outlet is what earns that. The Elite 200 V2 at $849 is the value line for a single operator with two tools, and its 8.0 cent hardware term per delivered kilowatt hour is the best in the comparison.

If your box lives outdoors and takes weather, Goal Zero publishes an IPX4 rating that Bluetti does not publish on any current model, and I would weight that heavily for open-bed storage even though the Goal Zero link on this page earns me nothing. If your box lives in a van, the cost per delivered kilowatt hour gap of roughly three to one runs the other way.

Whatever you buy, plan the day on usable watt hours and not on the number printed on the box. Bluetti’s own appliance rows put 78 to 81 percent of nameplate at the load, and that is the honest planning figure.
