The Paradise Report — Fri, May 22: Shopify Horizon Themes Live

Welcome to today’s Paradise Report. This is the daily news brief for small ecommerce founders and location-independent entrepreneurs, the people who run lean Shopify, Amazon, eBay, and high-ticket dropshipping stores from wherever they happen to be that month. Some of you are reading this from a desk in Florida. Some of you are reading it from a kitchen table in Da Nang or Chiang Mai. The point of this brief is the same either way: cover what actually changes your operator playbook this week, in plain language, with my opinion baked in.

Walmart Tightens the Walmart+ Badge to 2-Day Shipping
Walmart Marketplace cut the self-fulfilled shipping window for the Walmart+ badge from 3 calendar days to 2, added a General Certification of Conformity requirement for CPSC categories, and clamped down on AI-generated product copy that misrepresents items. Self-fulfilled sellers need to fix labels, listings, and SLAs this week.

Amazon’s AI Suspension Wave Keeps Hitting Sellers
Amazon’s 2026 enforcement is now AI-driven, the Account Health Rating is rolling out across more sellers, “product unsuitable” takedowns are climbing, and deactivated accounts face a 90-day fund hold. The skate-by-on-light-docs era is finished.

Google Marketing Live 2026 Rewrites the Ad Stack Around Gemini
On May 20, Google introduced Ask Advisor (a Gemini agent spanning Ads, Analytics, Merchant Center, and GMP), the Universal Cart (a persistent cart across Search, the Gemini app, YouTube, and Gmail), and three new Gemini-built shopping ad formats. If you run paid traffic, the rails just changed under your feet.

Klaviyo Customer Agent Becomes a Platform
On May 18, Klaviyo announced Customer Agent is being built as a platform, not a single product, so brands can extend agent capabilities across retention, support, and revenue workflows. The email tool is becoming an agent host.

Portugal’s New Citizenship Law Just Took Effect
Lei Orgânica n.º 1/2026 was published on May 18 and entered force on May 19. The legal-residence period to apply for citizenship is now 7 years for CPLP and EU nationals, 10 years for everyone else, up from the previous 5. For any of you on Portugal’s D8 plotting the passport finish line, the clock just got longer.

Mercury Hits $5.2B Valuation, Pursues a US Bank Charter
Mercury closed a Series D on May 20 at a $5.2B valuation, up 49% in 14 months, with TCV leading and Sequoia, Andreessen Horowitz, and Coatue joining. The fintech serves more than 300,000 customers including a third of early-stage startups, hit $650M annualized revenue, and is reportedly pursuing a US bank charter.

Da Nang Cements Its Spot as Vietnam’s Nomad Capital
VnExpress International reports central-district studio rents in Da Nang averaging VND6 million per month (around US$260) with 2BR units topping VND12M, as remote workers continue to use Vietnam’s 90-day e-visa as their entry hack. The Golden Visa proposal is still pending, but the city is functioning like a nomad capital already.

Ecommerce: Shopify, Walmart, and Amazon All Just Raised the Bar

🚨 BREAKING – Shopify Summer ’26 Edition is Live

This is the biggest Shopify release of the year, and it landed during the morning of the 22nd in the US. The headline number is 150+ changes shipped at once, but the operator-relevant pieces are concentrated in 5 buckets: themes, checkout speed, admin, payments, and POS.

On themes, Shopify shipped a brand new system called Horizon. There are 10 free themes built on nested theme blocks with names like Fabric, Ritual, and Vessel, each tuned for a specific industry. The bigger move is that Shopify Magic now generates theme blocks from a natural-language prompt. You can say “add a testimonial section with star ratings” and the block builds itself. For anyone running a high-ticket store who has been paying a designer for every conversion tweak, this is going to free up real budget. I am already telling clients to test Horizon on a duplicate store before they touch their production theme.

On checkout, Shopify rebuilt the cart and checkout pages. Load times are up to 50% faster. That alone is worth the upgrade for any store doing volume. On the admin, page loads are 25% faster and navigation between sections is 12.5% quicker, which adds up across an 8-hour day. Shopify Payments expanded to 16 additional countries plus added iDeal (Netherlands), Swish (Sweden), Twint (Switzerland), Mobilepay (Denmark), and USDC. POS is now on v10 with a ground-up redesign, and you can print up to 250 shipping labels in a single batch.

None of this is optional in the sense that you can skip it. You can stay on your current theme, but Horizon is where development effort goes from here. If you sell on Shopify, my advice is to read the full Shopify Editions page end to end this weekend and make a punch list. If you do not yet have a Shopify store and you are thinking high-ticket, the Shopify free trial is the cheapest way to get hands on Horizon before the herd does.

Walmart Marketplace Tightens the Walmart+ Badge Standard

Walmart Marketplace pushed a release that hits self-fulfilled sellers directly. The eligibility for the Walmart+ badge on self-fulfilled offers used to require shipping in 3 calendar days. It is now 2 calendar days or less. The badge is one of the strongest conversion lifts on Walmart, so anyone who cannot ship in 2 days is about to watch their conversion drop.

The release also added 2 new approved parcel carriers (Shipglobal and Western Post), updated CPSC compliance documentation so sellers in regulated categories must submit a valid General Certification of Conformity (GCC), and put new restrictions on AI-generated product content. Per the official Walmart Marketplace release notes, sellers are now explicitly responsible for substantiating any AI-generated content they publish on product detail pages. If you have been running Shopify Magic or another AI tool to populate your Walmart listings, you need to review what is on the site this week.

For high-ticket operators, this matters less because most of you are not running 2-day SLAs on $3,000 saunas anyway. For anyone running general merchandise on Walmart alongside a Shopify store, this is the kind of compliance change that takes an account from healthy to under review in a quiet weekend. Worth a Monday morning audit.

Amazon’s 2026 Suspension Wave: AHR is Real, Funds Hold for 90 Days

Amazon’s 2026 enforcement environment is the harshest I have seen in 9 years of watching the platform. According to Amazon Sellers Lawyer’s running 2025-2026 suspensions analysis, the platform’s AI systems are now flagging more accounts than ever, the Account Health Rating is the new single-number reality, and a growing share of suspensions are “product unsuitable” takedowns where the listing is not counterfeit and does not infringe IP, it is simply judged unsuitable for Amazon.

The piece that matters most for cash flow is Amazon’s fund hold policy. Funds are held for a 90-day settlement period after account deactivation. After 90 days, you can request disbursement of remaining funds. If your account is reinstated before 90 days, normal disbursement resumes. That is 90 days of working capital you cannot touch, on a platform that is already cash-flow brutal.

My read for the room: if you sell on Amazon as your only channel, you are a 1-suspension event away from a cash crisis. I tell every Amazon seller I work with to do 3 things this quarter. First, get your LLC and banking setup cleanly separated so a frozen Amazon account does not freeze your operating account. Second, build a separate sales channel, which is exactly what a high-ticket Shopify store is built to be. Third, run your numbers as if Amazon disappears for 90 days and ask whether the business still breathes.

AI for Operators: Gemini Eats the Ad Stack, Klaviyo Goes Agentic

Google Marketing Live 2026: Ask Advisor, Universal Cart, Gemini-Built Shopping Ads

Google Marketing Live happened on May 20, and the through-line was the same as Google I/O 2 weeks ago: Gemini runs the show. Per Google’s official announcement collection, the headline launches were Ask Advisor, a unified Gemini agent that spans Google Ads, Google Analytics, Merchant Center, and Google Marketing Platform; the Universal Cart, a persistent shopping cart powered by the Universal Commerce Protocol that works across Google Search, the Gemini app, YouTube, and Gmail; and 3 new ad formats: Conversational Discovery ads, Highlighted Answers inside AI Mode, and AI-powered Shopping ads that auto-generate a product fit explainer for the specific user search.

What this means for paid ads operators: if you run Performance Max or Demand Gen, the model is doing more of the heavy lifting, and your job moves further toward feeding it good signals. Catalog quality, first-party data, conversion event hygiene, and creative variety matter more than fiddling with bid strategy. If your Shopify product feed is thin or your Merchant Center is full of disapprovals, you are starting the year behind. Ask Advisor is in beta for English-language accounts globally, so you can poke it now if you have access.

On the SEO side, this stacks on top of Google’s May 15 AI Optimization Guide, which collapsed AEO and GEO back into SEO. The short version, per Search Engine Land’s coverage: write deep, expressive product content, not generic cards. Stores that already do high-ticket level content are positioned well. Thin Shein-style dropshipping pages are not.

Klaviyo Customer Agent Is Now a Platform, Not Just a Feature

On May 18, Klaviyo announced it is building Customer Agent as a platform rather than a single agent product. The framing is important. A platform means brands can plug in their own context, extend agent capabilities across customer service, retention, and revenue workflows, and build on top of Klaviyo’s data layer instead of just using a stock chat widget.

For ecom founders, this is the second major email tool this year to bet the company on agents (the first was the Klaviyo Composer release in Q1). It is also a sign that the “email tool” category is being rewritten in real time. If you are an EP reader using Omnisend for email and SMS already, this is just confirmation that agentic features are coming to your stack too. If you are on Klaviyo, you should be exploring Customer Agent’s beta now and not waiting until Q3 when half the agency world is selling implementation packages.

My honest opinion on email-tool agents: the tool gets you 70% of the way; the data and the offer get you the rest. A great agent on a thin list with weak offers will still underperform a basic flow on a clean list with strong offers. Get your supplier setup right first, get pricing and AOV right second, then layer on the AI on top.

Location-Independent Lifestyle: Portugal Moves the Goalposts, Mercury Goes Big, Da Nang Keeps Climbing

Portugal’s New Citizenship Law Just Took Effect

If you have been running the Portugal D8 visa as your slow-burn pathway to an EU passport, the math just changed on you. Portugal published Lei Orgânica n.º 1/2026 on May 18 and it entered force on May 19. The legal-residence period required for citizenship by naturalisation is now 7 years for nationals of CPLP countries and EU member states, and 10 years for everyone else. The prior threshold was 5 years for almost everyone, which is the number most US D8 holders were planning around.

Per the detailed idealista breakdown of the 2026 D8 rules, the income requirement is also now €3,680 per month for the main applicant, with a 50% increase for a spouse and 30% for each dependent child. The NHR original regime closed to new applicants on Jan 1, 2024, the transitional phase ended March 31, 2025. The IFICI regime (NHR 2.0) is still available for high-value professionals at a 20% flat rate on Portuguese income for 10 years.

What I tell US clients who are running a Shopify store and considering Portugal: if your goal is a long stretch in Europe to expand your business and pick up a passport, Portugal is still a great pick, but you are now planning around a 10-year clock, not a 5-year clock. Make sure your US LLC structure is set up cleanly before you move, because your Portuguese tax position depends on it. Form your LLC the right way with Northwest Registered Agent while you still have a US address you can use on filings.

Mercury Hits $5.2B Valuation, Pursuing a US Bank Charter

Mercury closed a Series D on May 20 at a $5.2B valuation, up 49% in 14 months, with TCV leading and Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, and Coatue joining, per CNBC’s reporting. Mercury serves more than 300,000 customers including a third of early-stage startups, hit $650M in annualized revenue in Q3, has been profitable for 4 years, and is reportedly pursuing a US bank charter. That charter pursuit matters because right now Mercury is technically a fintech sitting on top of partner banks, and a real charter would change the risk profile in your favor.

The takeaway for ecom founders: Mercury is now the clear default for US-LLC operators who want a clean online business banking experience tied to a US entity, alongside Mercury for receiving payouts and Wise for moving money across currencies when you are physically abroad. For anyone running their store from outside the US (a real chunk of you reading this), the combination of a US LLC formed via Northwest, a Mercury operating account, and Wise for FX is now the cleanest, most-tested stack in the market.

One word of caution: do not use Mercury for personal spending or anything that smells like commingling. The whole point of a US LLC is to keep the entity clean. If you are not sure how to separate things, my business formation guide walks through what I do for my own stores and what I tell every client to do.

Da Nang Cements Its Spot as Vietnam’s Nomad Capital

Vietnam still does not have a dedicated digital nomad visa. The proposed Golden Visa is still in draft, and the most popular workaround for now remains the 90-day multiple-entry e-visa at around $50 online, with quarterly visa runs to a neighboring country. Inside that framework, Da Nang has quietly become Vietnam’s location-independent capital. Per VnExpress International’s reporting, central-district studio apartments are averaging VND6 million per month (around US$260) and 2BR units are reaching VND12M.

The interesting operator angle here is not “go to Da Nang.” It is “watch what happens to cost-of-living math when a city tips from emerging to hub.” Studios at US$260 are still cheap by any global standard, but that price has roughly doubled in 18 months. Chiang Mai went through the same arc in 2018-2019. Lisbon did it in 2022-2023. The window where a city is both affordable and well-developed for remote work is narrower than people think.

For anyone reading this who is working toward the location-independent move and not there yet: pick a base, lock it in, and start running your high-ticket store from there before the price floor rises another 30%. For anyone already in Da Nang or Hoi An, the move is to formalize a real entity (US LLC + Mercury + Wise) and run the numbers as if you are staying 5 years, not 5 months.

What This Week’s News Tells Us

Look across these 8 stories and one pattern jumps out: every platform we operate on, plus every country we live in, is tightening up at the same time. Shopify is consolidating the theme stack and squeezing more out of checkout. Walmart cut a day off its self-fulfilled shipping window. Amazon’s enforcement is the strictest it has ever been. Google is consolidating the ad stack under a single Gemini agent. Klaviyo is turning its email tool into an agent platform. Portugal added 5 years to its citizenship clock. The only “loosening” story in the bunch is Da Nang, and that comes with rents climbing.

The lesson for small ecom founders and location-independent entrepreneurs is the same as it always is, just louder this week: control the things you can control. Pick a platform and run it cleanly. Pick a banking stack and run it cleanly. Pick a residency strategy and run it cleanly. The operators who get killed in 2026 are the ones running 3 half-baked structures across 4 jurisdictions with no clear primary entity. The operators who win are the ones with a clean US LLC, a Mercury account, a Wise account, a single high-ticket store with a real niche, and a deliberate residency plan that they can defend on paper.

If you do not yet have any of those pieces locked in, this week is a good prompt to fix the cheapest one first: your business entity. Form your LLC properly with Northwest Registered Agent so that whatever happens with your Amazon account, your Portugal residency clock, or your Da Nang lease, the entity behind the business is solid. Everything else is easier when the base is right.

One more thing worth saying out loud, because I see new operators get this wrong every week: AI is now table stakes. If you are not at least using Shopify Magic, Google’s Ask Advisor in beta, and an agentic email tool, your competitors are. That does not mean you outsource the thinking. It means you let the tools do the busywork so you can spend your time on the parts of the business that compound: niche selection, supplier relationships, content, and offers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I switch my Shopify store to the new Horizon themes right away?
No, not right away. Duplicate your store, install one of the Horizon themes, rebuild your core pages, A/B test it against your current theme, and only switch when the numbers say so. The free-themes-with-Magic approach is great, but a theme migration is still a high-risk change. Read the full Shopify Editions notes first.

I sell on Amazon as my only channel. What is the single best move I can make this month?
Separate your operating cash from your Amazon payout cash and stand up a second sales channel. Read my high-ticket dropshipping guide for how to think about a non-Amazon channel that is harder to suspend than a marketplace listing.

I am on the Portugal D8 already. Did this new law affect me?
If you had already submitted a citizenship application before May 19, 2026, transitional rules may apply, but anyone applying after May 19 falls under the new 7-year (CPLP/EU) or 10-year (others) clock. Talk to a Portuguese immigration lawyer this month, not next month, and have your US LLC paperwork in order before you do.

Is Mercury still safe to bank with given the bank charter pursuit?
Mercury is currently a fintech on top of partner banks, customer deposits are held at FDIC-insured partner institutions, and the charter pursuit is in the public domain. For most ecom founders running US LLCs, Mercury remains the clearest default. Always cross-check current FDIC coverage at FDIC.gov before parking large balances anywhere.

If Vietnam still does not have a real digital nomad visa, why are people going to Da Nang?
Because the 90-day e-visa is cheap, the cost of living is still low by Western standards, the internet is solid, and the city has hit critical mass for coworking and remote-worker amenities. The catch is that you are doing visa runs every 90 days, which is fine for a year or two but not a permanent residency strategy.
