Google Ads now lets advertisers preview up to 10 AI-written headlines and descriptions before switching on AI Max text customization, Search Engine Land reported on Oct. 8.
If you sell $1,500-plus products through Search ads, this changes what you can check before Google writes your claims. The AI reads your landing page and drafts ad text about price, financing, shipping and warranty, and until now you could only see that copy after it went live. It is a useful change for owners of a high-ticket store, and it comes with a catch I will get to.
The catch: a preview is a sample, and the assets Google actually serves can change every two days. Owners at Ecommerce Paradise sell on trust. If you run a store like the ones in my high-ticket dropshipping guide, one wrong promise in a headline costs more when the cart is $2,000 than when it is $20.
Below: what Google shipped, how AI Max got here, what the test data says, what it means for your ad budget and supplier agreements, and the five checks I would run this week. Independent numbers on AI Max are mixed, so I separate what the sources report from what I would do about it.

Google Ads Now Previews 10 AI Max Headlines Before You Opt In
The preview lives in the Asset optimization section, both when you create a Search campaign and when you edit an existing one, per Search Engine Land. You enter a final URL, Google’s AI reads that landing page, and in about 30 seconds it returns up to 10 sample headlines and descriptions. Those samples show how Google would adapt your messaging if you turned on text customization for AI Max.
Google says the preview supports every language currently available for text customization and most business categories. Adult content is excluded. The article, written by Paid Media News Editor Anu Adegbola, says the samples are examples and not necessarily the exact lines that will serve. It advises advertisers to keep monitoring generated assets after they switch the setting on, and frames the preview as part of Google’s push to add transparency and controls to AI Max as automation expands in Search.
The setting itself is documented on Google’s help page for text customization, formerly called automatically created assets. Per that page, Google builds the extra text from your domain, landing page, existing ads and ad group keywords, using “a combination of extractive techniques and generative AI.” Quality models check the output for accuracy and professional tone.
The page lists several rules that matter for a store owner. Generated assets serve only when Google predicts they will beat the headlines you uploaded. Assets are reviewed and refreshed at least every 48 hours, so a landing page edit shows up in your ads within two days. Final URL Expansion requires text customization to be on, and the page says that starting in September 2026, campaigns using text customization are automatically upgraded to AI Max.
Google also puts the accuracy burden on you. The same page says your website content must be accurate, not misleading and compliant with Google Ads policies, because that content is the main source material. The controls it lists are an on/off switch, a “text guidelines” pilot that lets you exclude terms and set tone, and an asset details report for monitoring what was generated. The page describes no other opt-out.
How AI Max Text Customization Reached Your Search Campaigns
AI Max for Search is Google’s bundle of automation for Search campaigns, and text customization is one of its parts. Google added a plain-language layer on April 30, 2026, when Brandon Ervin, Director of Product Management for Google Ads, announced AI Brief, per PPC Land’s May 3 write-up. AI Brief lets you steer AI Max with typed instructions in three buckets: messaging, matching and audience. Google’s own example of a messaging limit is never mentioning prices.
AI Brief also has a preview step, where you see sample assets and planned search types before activation. PPC Land reports it is rolling out to English-language AI Max for Search campaigns first, “over the coming months,” then to Performance Max and AI Max for Shopping, with no dates given. Existing text guidelines migrate into the messaging section automatically.
Performance claims are where the sources split. PPC Land reports that Google’s 2025 launch claimed a 14% conversion improvement. The same article cites an independent analysis of more than 250 retail campaigns from November 2025 that found AI Max delivered roughly 35% lower return on ad spend than traditional match types. It also cites a four-month test where cost per conversion was $100.37 under AI Max against $43.97 for phrase match.
Agency write-ups point the same direction with softer numbers. Advance Metrics wrote in 2026 that three out of four accounts that turn on AI Max see no meaningful change. Altitude Marketing ran a 30-day test and published its findings on Nov. 3, 2025: AI Max doubled the ad copy available and nudged click-through rate up slightly, but it reused outdated headlines, descriptions and sitelinks from old ads and pages. In some cases, the authors wrote, fixing errors took longer than writing the ads by hand.
Google is also automating other ad assets this month. On Oct. 2, Search Engine Land reported that Google will scan advertiser websites for promotions and turn them into promotion assets on eligible Search and Performance Max campaigns, starting Oct. 12. Advertisers are opted in automatically and can opt out under account-level automated asset settings by turning off “Automated Promotions.” I covered the related direct-offer test in my post on Google’s promo codes in AI Mode.
One counterpoint belongs here. Google’s position is that generated assets serve only when predicted to outperform yours, and that its quality models screen for accuracy. For a store with thin ad copy and few headline variations, extra assets can help. I found no independent test that isolates high-ticket Search campaigns, so every number above comes from retail or general accounts.
What AI Max Copy Previews Mean for High-Ticket Store Owners
My read is that the preview solves the “before” problem and leaves the “after” problem open. Approving 10 sample lines today approves nothing about next Thursday, because assets refresh at least every 48 hours and serve dynamically. The asset details report is the real control. Treat the preview as a smoke test and the report as the audit.
The risk sits in specific claims. If your landing page says “starting at $1,299,” “free shipping over $999” or “0% financing for 6 months,” the AI will repeat those lines, including after you quietly end the offer. The landing-page side of this is the subject of my guide to turning Google Shopping clicks into sales. A buyer who clicks expecting a promise you no longer honor is a chargeback waiting to happen, and I laid out the defenses in my chargeback prevention guide for high-ticket stores.
Price language deserves its own paragraph. If your supplier agreements include MAP rules on advertised prices, a generated line like “save 20% today” could cross a line you never wrote. I am not a lawyer and every agreement differs, so read yours before you let AI write discounts. Treat generated copy like any other ad claim, and fold it into the checks in my conversion system post for high-ticket Google Ads. The ad, the page and the follow-up need to say the same thing.
There is a quieter cost too. Generated lines that reuse stale text, the failure Altitude Marketing described, can send a buyer to a page that no longer matches the promise. A $2,000 order with a mismatched promise brings refund requests, support tickets and sometimes a dispute, and none of that shows up in your click-through rate. If you sell through a dealer agreement, one off-policy line can also put a supplier relationship at risk, and those relationships are the foundation of a store like yours.
Here is hypothetical math, not a reported result. Say you spend $10,000 a month on Search at a 4.0x return, which is $40,000 in revenue. If AI Max matched the 35% lower return from the independent retail analysis, you would land near 2.6x, or $26,000, a $14,000 monthly gap. High-ticket accounts may behave differently, which is exactly why you test on a slice. A $2,000 test budget, 20% of that spend, caps your exposure while you learn.
Three scenarios, with my thresholds. First, if the preview shows clean copy and your landing page is current, run text customization on one campaign for at least four weeks. Second, if the preview includes an unsupported claim, fix the page and preview again before you test anything. Third, if the campaign records fewer than about 30 conversions a month, my rule of thumb is that an AI Max test cannot tell you much, so keep your hand-written responsive search ads.
Platform automation keeps eating work owners used to do by hand, as Meta’s AI ad agent test shows. Google’s side of the same trend is in my post on its conversion lift tests. The owners who win keep ownership of claims, tracking and landing pages while the platform handles volume.
One cheap way to keep a second reader on the copy is Claude. I cover that kind of setup in my Claude for ecommerce guide.
If auditing ads, pages, supplier terms and tracking every week sounds like a second job, it is. That operator load is the reason my team built the turnkey done-for-you service, where we build and run the high-ticket store for you.

Audit Your AI Max Ad Copy Settings This Week
Five checks, in the order I would run them:
- Open one Search campaign, go to Asset optimization, paste the final URL of your best-selling category page and read all 10 previews. Flag every line that states a price, financing term, shipping promise, warranty or “authorized dealer” claim.
- If any campaign already has text customization on, open the asset details report and read what has been generated. Switch the setting off on any campaign where a claim is unsupported, and note that Google says campaigns using text customization are being upgraded to AI Max.
- Fix the source before the output. Update expired offers and old shipping thresholds on your Shopify pages, since Google refreshes generated text from them at least every 48 hours.
- Use the text guidelines pilot, or AI Brief once it reaches your account, to ban the words you cannot back up. Google’s own example is never mentioning prices, and you can write rules like “no discount percentages” the same way.
- Put the test on a calendar. Weekly, review search terms and generated assets with Semrush open for competitor ad copy. Judge results on real profit, and Finaloop is how I would track it instead of trusting platform ROAS alone.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is AI Max text customization?
It is a setting inside AI Max for Search campaigns that generates extra headlines and descriptions for responsive search ads, per Google’s help page. It was formerly called automatically created assets.
Does the preview change what actually serves?
No. Search Engine Land says the preview shows examples, not necessarily the exact text that will run. Treat it as a test of what Google would write from your page.
Can I opt out of AI Max text customization?
You can turn the setting off at the campaign level. Google’s page describes no other opt-out, and it says campaigns using text customization are being upgraded to AI Max starting in September 2026.
Does this apply to Shopping and Performance Max?
The preview announced Oct. 8 covers Search campaigns. PPC Land reports AI Brief is headed to Performance Max and AI Max for Shopping later, without dates, so read how my Merchant Center checkout hub post fits your feed setup.
How many conversions do I need before testing AI Max?
Google publishes no minimum for this feature. My rule of thumb is about 30 conversions a month per campaign, and many high-ticket stores fall under that, so test on your highest-volume campaign only.
Can AI check the generated copy for me?
Yes, as a second reader. Paste the preview and your price and shipping policy into Claude and ask it to flag mismatches, then make the final call yourself. For support fallout when an ad sets the wrong expectation, Gorgias keeps those tickets in one inbox.
What if the clicks still land and bounce?
Capture them. A welcome flow in Klaviyo turns a mismatched click into a lead. The sequences in my ecommerce email flows guide show what to send.
