Cancelling NordVPN is quick once you know where the button is, and the part that trips people up is not the button. It is understanding that you are usually switching off renewal, not ending a paid term, and that a refund is a completely separate request with its own clock. Get that wrong and you either keep paying or you lose protection you already paid for.
I run Ecommerce Paradise, and one habit worth building as a store owner is a quarterly audit of recurring charges. If you are still learning what high-ticket dropshipping is, a clean list of what leaves your card each month is one of the cheapest things you can build. VPNs are a classic leak because the first-term price is low and the renewal price is not.
This guide covers how to cancel NordVPN in 2026, how to claim the 30-day refund, how to cancel a free trial, what to do if you bought through an app store or a retailer, and what to do if you are charged after cancelling. Everything comes from NordVPN’s own help center and pricing page plus a few independent sources, as I read them on October 7, 2026. I have not cancelled a live subscription to capture every screen, and menus change, so trust the button names on your screen over my wording. This is general information, not personalized financial or legal advice, and I am not a licensed advisor.

| Where you bought it | Where to cancel | What it does | Refund? |
|---|---|---|---|
| NordVPN’s own website (card, PayPal and similar) | Nord Account, Billing tab, Cancel next to Auto-renewal | Stops the next renewal charge | 30 days from the first purchase only |
| A free trial started on the website | Nord Account, Billing, Subscriptions, Cancel next to Free trial | Ends the trial before it converts to a paid plan | Nothing to refund if you cancel before the trial ends |
| Apple App Store, Google Play or Amazon Appstore | The store’s own subscription settings | Depends on the store | Handled by the store (Google Play has a route through NordVPN support) |
| A retailer, reseller or activation code | Check the terms from the time of purchase | Depends on whether you turned on auto-renewal | Contact the retailer |
| Not sure you should cancel at all | Price your options first, see the math below | Nothing changes yet | Check the plan terms on the NordVPN plans page |
Know Your Renewal Price Before the Charge Hits Your Card
NordVPN’s pricing page lists Basic at $139.08 a year on renewal, Complete at $219.48 and Prime at $296.28, with a 30-day money-back guarantee on new purchases. Look at today’s numbers before you decide to keep or cancel.
Cancelling Renewal vs Getting a Refund: Two Different Requests
NordVPN’s help center describes the main cancel route as stopping your subscription from renewing at the next billing date. It does not describe it as ending the term you have already paid for. That is a cancellation of the future, not of the past.
A refund is separate. NordVPN’s refund policy offers a 30-day money-back guarantee for new subscriptions, and it says the guarantee applies only to your initial purchase. Once a subscription renews, that renewal is not eligible under the policy unless local law says otherwise.
So the order of operations depends on where you are. If the renewal has not hit yet, turn off auto-renewal and you are done. If you bought in the last 30 days and want out entirely, ask for the refund. If a renewal already landed and you did not want it, the refund policy as written does not cover it, which is the main reason I would rather you act before the charge.
Step by Step: How to Cancel NordVPN Auto-Renewal
This is the main path if you bought directly from NordVPN’s site. The steps below follow NordVPN’s help article on cancelling auto-renewal, which also says the same steps apply to NordPass, NordLocker, Dedicated IP and bundle subscriptions.
Step 1: Log in to your Nord Account
Go to the Nord Account login page and sign in with the email you used at purchase. If you cannot remember which email that was, search your inbox for “Nord” and look at the order confirmation, because that message is addressed to the right account.
Step 2: Open the Billing tab
In the left-hand navigation, select Billing. You should see your active subscription, its auto-renewal status and the renewal date. Check that you are looking at the right one if you have more than one product, for example a VPN plan plus a separate Dedicated IP.
Step 3: Click Cancel next to Auto-renewal
On the Billing page, auto-renewal shows as on, with a Cancel button beside it. Click it, and the page then asks you to confirm by selecting Cancel auto-renewal.
Step 4: Confirm the status changed to off
After you confirm, the Subscriptions page shows auto-renewal as off. NordVPN’s article says you should also receive a confirmation email at your registered address if the cancellation succeeded.
Step 5: Screenshot it and keep the email
Take a screenshot of the off status and save the confirmation email. If a charge shows up later, those two items are your proof, and they matter in the dispute steps further down.
One caveat on access. As I read NordVPN’s wording, your paid term keeps running after you turn renewal off, but the cancel article does not spell that out in so many words. Its activation-code article says you lose the ability to connect once the subscription runs out, and CNET’s reviewer advises cancelling auto-renewal and buying another plan before your membership expires, which only makes sense if access lasts until then. Still, check the expiration date shown under the NordVPN service in your Nord Account rather than assuming.
What Happens After You Turn Renewal Off
Two things are worth knowing. NordVPN says its subscription packages are paid upfront, so a 1-year or 2-year plan is charged in full when you buy, and cancelling renewal later does not return any of that money. The only monthly plan is the 1-month option.
The second is payment method. A NordVPN help article says any payment method other than CoinPayments, prepaid cards and gift cards creates an ongoing subscription that charges you after the account expires. In other words, if you paid with a card or PayPal, renewal is on by default and you have to switch it off yourself.
Plan names are another small trap. Some NordVPN help pages still say Standard and Plus, while the current pricing page says Basic, Complete and Prime, so go with the names on your account screen.
If You Bought Through an App Store or a Retailer
NordVPN’s help center is clear that the Nord Account route only controls subscriptions it bills itself. Everything else has its own door.
Apple App Store
Apple’s instructions for iPhone and iPad say to open Settings, tap your name, select Subscriptions, choose the subscription and tap Cancel Subscription. On a Mac, open the App Store, click your name, select Subscriptions and cancel there. Apple also says that for a trial you should cancel at least 24 hours before it ends.
For refunds, NordVPN says it cannot issue refunds for payments made through the Apple App Store, so you would contact Apple directly. That is a real downside of buying inside the app.
Google Play
Google’s steps are to open subscriptions in Google Play, select the subscription and tap Cancel subscription. Google also says that uninstalling the app does not cancel the subscription, and that after cancelling you keep access through the rest of the billing period you already paid for.
On refunds, NordVPN says Google Play payments can be refunded through NordVPN support if they fall within its refund terms, and that a payment made in the last 48 hours can be refunded directly from your Google Play account. Check which route fits your timing.
Amazon Appstore
NordVPN’s article points Amazon Appstore subscribers to Amazon’s own subscription instructions, and its refund policy says to contact Amazon directly. I did not walk through Amazon’s menus, so I will not guess at button names.
Retailers, resellers and activation codes
If you bought a code from a retailer such as Best Buy or a marketplace such as StackSocial, NordVPN’s refund policy says to contact that retailer about a refund. NordVPN’s activation article says that when you redeem a 25-character key, Nord Account asks whether you want to enable auto-renewal, and that you can skip the step.
If you skipped it, you have nothing to cancel, and the service simply stops working when the term ends. NordVPN’s article says you lose the ability to connect once the subscription runs out.
Worried About Getting Locked In Again? Start With the 30-Day Window
NordVPN’s refund policy covers the first purchase for 30 days, and renewals are not covered. If you are coming back, test your bank, supplier and payment logins inside that window and set a reminder for before the term ends.
Cancelling a Free Trial Before You Are Charged
NordVPN’s help center says it offers a free 7-day trial for new users, with no payment taken during the trial. You must cancel before day seven or the plan you chose starts automatically at the price shown when you began.
To cancel, log in to your Nord Account, click Billing in the left-hand menu, and under Subscriptions click Cancel next to Free trial. NordVPN’s help article also says it emails a reminder of the price and conditions before the paid subscription begins.
Here is where the sources are thin. NordVPN’s help article says the trial covers 1-year and 2-year plans under several names (Prime, Ultimate Max, Ultra and Complete Max) and lists 15 countries, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany and Japan. The plan names do not line up with the Basic, Complete and Prime labels on the pricing page, and the pricing page I read did not mention a trial at all. I could not find a separate current trial page to compare, so I cannot tell you which plans qualify for you.
Treat the trial terms on your own checkout screen as the final word. The help article also says the trial needs a credit card or PayPal. A separate 3-day trial exists for first-time Android users through Google Play, and PCMag’s review mentions only that one, so check which you are enrolled in.
Getting a Refund: The 30-Day Rule in Practice
NordVPN’s refund article says to contact customer support through the live chat at the bottom of its help pages. Support then sends you a link, and after you verify it is you, the page shows which payments are eligible, each with a Refund button.
The steps after support sends the link
Click Refund, pick your reason for cancelling and click Submit and Continue, then confirm on the refund summary page. You should get a confirmation email, and the payment status moves to Refund Processing.
NordVPN says the processing can take up to 4 hours because of a recent implementation, and that depending on your payment method the money can take up to 10 business days to reach your account. If more than 10 business days pass, the article tells you to contact live chat again.
Why you might not see a Refund button
NordVPN lists three reasons. The payment was made more than 30 days ago, a refund for your initial payment was already issued, or the payment is for a renewed term, which is not refundable under the guarantee once the initial service period has ended.
The article says the process is automated, and that if you believe the automated decision is wrong and that the law gives you a right to a refund, you can contact live chat and ask for a review. NordVPN also says it does not offer phone support, and its chat starts with an AI chatbot before handing you to an agent if needed.
Charged After You Cancelled? What to Check First
Start with your Nord Account billing history, because it shows each payment and its status. NordVPN has help articles for being charged twice and for being charged the wrong amount, and the second one lists the common causes: the renewal price differed from the intro price, you picked a bundle like Complete instead of a basic plan, currency conversion, tax, or an expired coupon.
If the charge is plainly wrong, contact NordVPN support with your screenshot and confirmation email. NordVPN’s double-charge article asks for the payment type, date and transaction ID of your older payments, so have those ready.
When a card dispute makes sense
If support does not fix a charge you should not have received, your card’s dispute process is the next step. The FTC explains that a credit card billing dispute must be sent in writing so it reaches the issuer within 60 days after the first bill with the error, and that the issuer must acknowledge it within 30 days and resolve it within 90.
The CFPB gives similar guidance in its explanation of how to dispute a credit card charge: call the card company right away, then send written notice within 60 calendar days. Keep a log of dates and calls, as the CFPB suggests.
A dispute is slower than a refund request, so I would try support first for anything NordVPN’s own policy covers. Those timelines are for credit cards, and debit card and PayPal protections work differently, so check your own issuer’s rules. Also do not count on a federal click-to-cancel rule to rescue you. The FTC’s Negative Option Rule page lists a March 2026 request for public comment on possible amendments to help consumers avoid unwanted recurring payments, which tells me the rules are still being worked out.
The Renewal Math: What You Are Really Deciding
Here are the numbers from NordVPN’s pricing page as I read it on October 7, 2026. All plans list 10 devices and a 30-day money-back guarantee.
| Plan | 2-year price today | Renews at (per year) | Renewal per month (my math) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $94.23 for 27 months | $139.08 | $11.59 |
| Complete | $121.23 for 27 months | $219.48 | $18.29 |
| Prime | $202.23 for 27 months | $296.28 | $24.69 |
The 1-year Basic plan is $65.88 and also renews at $139.08, and the 1-month Basic plan is $14.99 a month. My own arithmetic shows twelve months of the monthly plan costs $179.88, which is $40.80 more than one annual renewal, so month-to-month is the expensive way to keep it.
Now the useful comparison. If you hold a 2-year Basic plan for 39 months, that is the $94.23 first term plus one $139.08 renewal, or $233.31 total, about $5.98 a month. Hold it for 63 months with three renewals and the total is $511.47, about $8.12 a month. My NordVPN pricing guide goes deeper on the plans and the renewal.
What a missed cancellation costs
If you forget and the renewal hits, the single charge is $139.08 on Basic, $219.48 on Complete or $296.28 on Prime. The gap between Basic and Complete at renewal is $80.40 a year, and between Complete and Prime it is $76.80. Those are the numbers to compare against whatever you actually use from the bundle.
The stacking trick, and its limits
CNET’s NordVPN review says you can avoid an expensive auto-renewal by stacking subscriptions, and recommends, if you want to keep the service longer, cancelling auto-renewal immediately and buying another plan before your membership expires. NordVPN’s own help article on upgrading agrees on the mechanics: buying a subscription when you already have one extends your current service by the additional time.
The catch is that stacking only works if you act before expiry and the new term is priced below the renewal. I cannot verify future promotions, so check the price before you rely on it.
Why some reviewers are cautious
PCMag’s NordVPN review, updated April 15, 2026, notes that users report big price increases at renewal, charges that arrive early and little notice, and says some users alleged that cancelling was difficult. It also says NordVPN has been involved in a class action lawsuit on behalf of California and North Carolina over its renewal tactics for annual plans, and that as of September 2025 the case was awaiting arbitration. I could not find a more recent update, so treat that as an allegation and a reason to set a reminder, not as a finding.
To be fair to NordVPN, its help pages say it emails you about renewal price changes before your subscription renews, and its pricing page prints the renewal figures. Either way, put the renewal date in your calendar.
Before You Cancel: Check What Depends on the VPN
This is the step people skip. A VPN gets quietly wired into your workday, so list the logins and tools that rely on it before you let it lapse.
For a store owner that usually means supplier dealer portals, your payment processor dashboard and your business bank. If you manage dealer accounts, which is the process in my guide to finding suppliers for high-ticket dropshipping, check each portal still works from your normal connection before you cancel.
If you are still deciding what your store sells, a VPN is rarely the thing to worry about yet. My high-ticket niches list is a better use of that attention, and it is free.
If you work from overseas, the calculation is different, because some sites behave differently by country. My guide to how to set up NordVPN covers the settings worth getting right if you decide to keep it.
Downgrade, Switch or Delete Instead of Cancelling
Cancelling is not your only option, and sometimes it is the wrong one.
Downgrading a plan
NordVPN’s help article says you cannot downgrade an active subscription. To go to a lower plan or a shorter length, you first request a refund under the money-back policy, then pick the lower plan from Available plans in your Nord Account. That only works if you are inside the 30-day window.
Upgrading or extending
Upgrading is easier. Under Available plans you can choose a longer length or a plan such as Complete, and NordVPN says the new purchase extends your current service with the additional time. If you are on the fence about the bundle, remember that Complete bundles NordPass and NordLocker, according to NordVPN’s help center, so you would need to be using them to justify it.
Deleting your Nord Account
Deleting an account is permanent and loses access to all purchased services. In your Nord Account, open account settings, find the account deletion section at the bottom and click Delete account, then verify with the emailed code.
NordVPN’s article says deletion applies to all Nord Security products including NordPass and NordLocker, and tells you to export your passwords and files first. It also says extra steps may be needed if you bought through the Apple App Store. I did not see anything saying that deleting an account gets you a refund, so ask about that before you delete.
Uninstalling the app
Uninstalling does not cancel billing, and Google says so directly for Play subscriptions. Cancel first, then remove the software if you want it gone.
If You Are Cancelling Over Price: Alternatives to Consider
If the renewal number is why you are here, it is fair to ask whether another service suits you better. I read each vendor’s pricing page on October 7, 2026, and some figures differ from what I recorded in my September guides, so confirm every number on the vendor’s checkout page. Where a page did not show a renewal price, the table says so instead of guessing.
| Service | What its pricing page showed on October 7, 2026 | Who it fits |
|---|---|---|
| PureVPN | Standard billed $57.95 on the 2-year plan and $47.95 on the 1-year plan; renewal amounts were not shown on the page I read | Lowest sticker price in this group |
| CyberGhost | $2.19 a month, billed $56.94 on the 2 years plus 2 months plan; 45-day refund window on the longer plans, 14 days on monthly; 7 devices | Cheap entry and the longest refund window here, if 7 devices is enough |
| ExpressVPN | Basic billed $83.72 for the first 28 months, then autorenews at $99.95 a year; 10 devices | Published renewal that sits below NordVPN Basic’s $139.08 |
| Surfshark | Starter billed $67.23 for the first 27 months; unlimited devices; no renewal amount stated | Unlimited devices, with an unknown renewal |
| Proton VPN and PrivadoVPN | Proton VPN advertises a free plan with 1 device and no data cap; PrivadoVPN advertises a free plan with 10GB every 30 days and 1 device | Free tiers worth testing before you pay anyone |
My longer comparison is NordVPN alternatives for 2026, which covers who should switch and who should not. If you do move, buy the replacement while NordVPN is still active and test it for a week before you turn renewal off.
Where NordVPN still makes sense
I do not think you should cancel just because renewal is higher than the intro rate, since that is true of almost every VPN. If you use the 10 device slots, the bundle or the support depth, NordVPN may still be worth the number, as long as you choose the term deliberately and put the date in your calendar.
I would cancel if you no longer need the VPN, if you pay for Complete or Prime and use none of the extras, or if a cheaper service passed your week of real-world testing.
Keep the Rest of Your Subscription Stack in Check
NordVPN is one line item in a stack of tools a store accumulates. In Nord Account, the Billing history page has Get invoice and Get receipt buttons, and the invoice option lets you fill in the details you need, which is handy if the charge goes through a business.
If your store runs through an entity, my guide to business formation for high-ticket dropshipping explains why separating business and personal spending matters. I am not giving tax advice here, so ask an accountant how to treat any particular software cost.
Security software is another place where renewals sneak up on people. I walked through the same exercise in my guide to how to cancel Norton, and the rules differ enough that it is worth reading if you have both.
If you would rather have help with the tool decisions, my coaching is built for that. The free beginner guide shows how pieces like a VPN fit into a complete store.
My Verdict: Cancel, Keep or Switch
Here is how I would decide. If you do not use it, turn off auto-renewal today, screenshot the confirmation and let the term run out. If you bought in the last 30 days and it is not for you, request the refund now through live chat.
If you use it and the renewal price is the only problem, do not cancel in a panic. Set a reminder for two months before the term ends, compare the renewal against an alternative, and decide with the number in front of you. If you want to stay, choose your term with the renewal figure in mind, and NordVPN’s plan page is where you check what it costs today.
If you bought through Apple, Google, Amazon or a retailer, remember the cancellation and refund both live with them, not with NordVPN. And if you were charged after cancelling, gather your screenshot and confirmation email, write to support first, and keep the card dispute in your back pocket within its 60-day window.
Decide Once, Then Put the Date on Your Calendar
If you are keeping a VPN, choose the term on purpose: Basic renews at $139.08 a year, new purchases have a 30-day refund window, and a reminder two months before expiry costs nothing.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I cancel my NordVPN subscription?
Log in to your Nord Account, open the Billing tab, click Cancel next to Auto-renewal and confirm with Cancel auto-renewal. NordVPN says the status then shows as off and you should get a confirmation email. If you bought through an app store, cancel in that store instead.
Will I get a refund if I cancel NordVPN?
Only for a first purchase made within the last 30 days. NordVPN’s policy says the guarantee applies to the initial subscription, and renewals are not covered unless local law requires it. Request it through live chat, and check the current plan terms before buying again.
Do I lose access as soon as I turn off auto-renewal?
NordVPN’s wording says the subscription will not renew at the next billing date, and as I read it your paid term continues. It does not spell this out, so check the expiration date in your Nord Account dashboard. If you want to keep service, you can buy a new plan before it expires and NordVPN says it extends your current time.
How do I cancel the NordVPN free trial?
Log in to your Nord Account, click Billing, and under Subscriptions click Cancel next to Free trial, before the 7-day trial ends. NordVPN says the plan starts automatically at the price shown if you do not cancel, and its own pages name the eligible plans inconsistently, so confirm on your own checkout screen whether a trial is offered to you.
What should I do if I was charged after cancelling?
Check your billing history, then contact NordVPN support with the screenshot and confirmation email from your cancellation. If support does not resolve a charge you should not have received, your card issuer’s dispute process is the next step, and the FTC and CFPB both note a 60-day written-notice deadline.
