Short answer: for a New York LLC, Northwest Registered Agent costs $39 plus state fees to form and $125 a year after the first year, while New York Registered Agent LLC charges $49 a year for registered agent service. Both use an Albany address, which matters because it lets you run New York’s required newspaper notices in Albany instead of New York City. As of October 2026, New York Registered Agent LLC is cheaper on the registered agent line and sells hands-off publication and biennial filing. Northwest is the one I pick when you want one vendor for every state and a free domain, website, email and phone line bundled in.
I run Ecommerce Paradise and teach high-ticket dropshipping, so I send a lot of store owners through LLC formation. In my experience, New York is the state where the registered agent choice actually changes your year-one bill, because of the publication rule and the 120-day deadline attached to it. This guide uses the numbers from both vendors’ own pages and from New York’s official sources, with the date I checked them.
One correction up front. Earlier versions of this post quoted New York Registered Agent LLC at $200 a year and said Northwest’s New York office was in New York City. Both were wrong, and I rebuilt the cost math from scratch below. If you are still deciding whether an LLC is even the right first step, start with my guide to what high-ticket dropshipping is. Then use my business formation checklist for the full order of operations.

My Default Pick: Northwest Registered Agent
$39 + state fees to form, a year of registered agent service included, then $125/year. It is not the cheapest agent in New York, but you get one vendor across states and a free identity package. The New York specialist case is below.
The Short Answer: Which One Should You Pick?
Pick Northwest if you might run more than one LLC, might register in other states, or just want one account and one phone number for everything. Pick New York Registered Agent LLC if your company will live in New York only and you want either the lowest yearly agent fee or someone else to run the newspaper notices and file your biennial statements.
That is a different verdict than the old version of this post gave for the New York-only case, because the real gap runs the other way. At $49 a year against $125, New York Registered Agent LLC is $76 a year cheaper for the agent line alone. Northwest earns its premium through the bundle and the multi-state coverage, not through a lower New York price. If you only care about the lowest bill, I will say plainly that the specialist wins that comparison.
Before you buy either one, confirm the state is right for you. I cover that decision in the Wyoming section further down, and it can save you more than any registered agent price difference.
Why New York Is Different From Every Other State
Forming the LLC itself is routine. The New York Department of State lists the fee for filing the Articles of Organization at $200, which you can confirm on its Articles of Organization page. What surprises people comes after the filing.
New York LLC Law section 206 requires a new LLC to publish notice in two newspapers, one weekly and one daily, once a week for six successive weeks. The papers come from the county where your LLC’s office is located, and the notice has to go out within 120 days of the articles taking effect. You then file a Certificate of Publication with the affidavits attached. The statute text is on the New York State Senate site, and it states that if proof is not filed in time, your authority to do business in New York is suspended after the 120 days.
Filing the certificate costs $50, according to the Department of State’s corporations and business entities FAQ. The newspaper ads are the variable part. New York Registered Agent LLC says publishing in Albany runs under $200 in fees, while New York City can top $1,000 and may reach $1,500. Those are that vendor’s figures, not state figures, so treat the NYC number as a rough warning rather than a quote.
New York also asks for a biennial statement every two years. The Department of State’s biennial statement page lists the fee at $9 and says the filing month matches the month your LLC was formed. It does not list a monetary fine for missing it, but it does say a non-filer is marked past due, which can block certain business transactions.
Because the county is set by your LLC’s office address, the Albany address both vendors offer is the real lever. In my experience, the part first-time New York founders underestimate is the 120-day clock. It starts at formation, not when you get around to it.
Northwest Registered Agent: The Default Pick for Most Store Owners
Northwest is the vendor I recommend by default to the store owners I work with. Its site copyright notice runs from 1998, and its homepage leans on two things: privacy and human support. Northwest can absolutely form an LLC in New York, and its New York LLC page walks through the same publication and biennial rules described above.
What You Get for $39
The New York LLC page lists $39 plus state fees and says the package includes a year of registered agent service. With the $200 state fee, year one comes to $239 before publication. The LLC page also lists same-day processing, a business address, compliance reminders, and a free identity package with a domain, website, email and phone line.
After year one, Northwest’s registered agent page lists $125 a year and says that is what it has always cost, with no per-document charges. That page also lists $100 a year per state if you hold five or more states, which is useful if you ever run several stores in several entities.
Privacy and the Albany Address
Northwest describes its approach as Privacy by Default, with your personal information shielded wherever possible and never sold to third parties. In practice, you list Northwest’s address on public filings instead of your home address. For a store owner who works from a spare bedroom, that matters, because state business records are public.
The detail I got wrong in the old post: Northwest’s registered office for New York is in Albany, not New York City. Its New York registered agent page says Albany newspapers are cheaper than New York City ones, and its New York LLC page puts Albany publication at about $100. That is Northwest’s own marketing figure, so I model a more conservative $150 per notice run in the cost table below.
Where Northwest Wins
The bundle is the real advantage. A free domain, website, business email and phone number from day one saves the setup work and the monthly fees you would otherwise pay elsewhere. Mail handling is also included: Northwest says it scans normal business mail, up to 10 scans a year free, and handles legal mail the same day.
Multi-state coverage is the other win. Its site has a state selector with pages for each state, so if your store grows into a second entity or a registration outside New York, you keep one vendor. Its homepage also lists a Corporate Guide phone line at 509-768-2249 and describes the support as human.
Where Northwest Falls Short for New York
Price is the first gap. At $125 a year it is $76 more than New York Registered Agent LLC’s $49 every year after the first. Over four renewal years that is $304.
The second gap is hands-off filing. On the Northwest pages I read, I could not find a service that places the newspaper notices or files the Certificate of Publication for you, and the biennial statement is a reminder plus the form and instructions. Northwest’s pages do not say it offers either, so I treat both as do-it-yourself, and I would call a Corporate Guide to confirm before you buy if that matters to you.
Form Your LLC With Northwest for $39
A year of registered agent service is included, then $125/year. Free domain, website, email and phone line, plus 10 free mail scans a year. Prices as of October 2026.
New York Registered Agent LLC: The New York Specialist
New York Registered Agent LLC sells New York services and little else on the pages I read. It gives an Albany address, 418 Broadway, Suite Y, and says it owns that building. Its pitch is that using the Albany office as your business address lets you publish in Albany and save roughly $1,000 compared with New York City.
What You Get and What It Costs
This vendor’s pricing is where I need to flag a discrepancy. Its homepage says it charges a flat $100 plus state fees for LLC formation, while its dedicated New York LLC page says $149 plus state fees. I could not tell which is current, so my cost table uses the higher $149 and you should check the checkout total.
The formation package includes one year of New York registered agent service. After that, the agent fee is $49 a year, and the site says the rate does not go up and that you can cancel any time with no fee. Mail scanning is separate: standard is $49 a year with a suite number and 10 scans, and premium is $99 a year for 25 scans.
The add-ons are where it differs from Northwest. The New York Publication Service totals $375: its $150 fee, a $75 expedited Certificate of Publication filing, and $150 for the Albany ads. It contacts the newspaper, runs the notices, gets the Affidavit of Publication and files the certificate. The biennial statement service is $100 plus the $9 state fee, charged when it files. It also offers a free 90-day identity package of website, phone and email, then $9 a month per service.
Where New York Registered Agent LLC Wins
The agent fee is the headline: $49 a year with no stated increase. If you add its $49 standard mail scanning, you are at $98 a year, still under Northwest’s $125. For a New York-only LLC that wants a clean, cheap agent, it is hard to argue against.
The second win is time. If you do not want to chase newspaper ads or remember a two-year filing, paying for both services removes two tasks from your plate. The 120-day deadline is the type of thing that gets missed in a busy launch month, and the vendor’s own page says a missed deadline leads to suspension.
Where It Falls Short
The identity package is free for only 90 days, then $9 a month per service, so a founder who wants a website, phone line and email will pay more over time than with Northwest’s bundle. The pages I read are also New York focused, and I did not find other states listed, so growing outside New York likely means a second vendor.
The conflicting $100 and $149 formation prices are also a small trust issue. It is not a dealbreaker, but I would screenshot the checkout page before paying so you know what was quoted.
What a New York LLC Really Costs Over Five Years
Here is a fresh cost model using only the figures above. I assume an Albany address for both vendors, a $200 state filing fee, a $50 Certificate of Publication when you file it yourself, $150 for the Albany newspaper ads, and two $9 biennial statements in five years. Northwest’s own page says Albany ads are about $100, so its totals could be $50 lower. I use New York Registered Agent LLC’s $149 formation price, so subtract $49 if the $100 price applies at checkout.
| Five-year cost (as of October 2026) | Math | Total |
|---|---|---|
| Northwest, you handle publication and biennial filings | $39 + $200 + $150 ads + $50 certificate + 4 x $125 + 2 x $9 | $957 |
| New York Registered Agent LLC, you handle publication and biennial filings | $149 + $200 + $150 ads + $50 certificate + 4 x $49 + 2 x $9 | $763 |
| New York Registered Agent LLC, it handles publication and both biennial filings | $149 + $200 + $375 publication + 4 x $49 + 2 x ($100 + $9) | $1,138 |
Read that carefully. The cheapest path for a New York-only founder who is willing to do the paperwork is New York Registered Agent LLC at about $763, which is roughly $194 less than Northwest. Paying that vendor to do everything lands at $1,138, which is $181 more than doing it all yourself through Northwest. In other words, you are paying roughly $375 in convenience fees for the full-service route.
Two things the table leaves out. Northwest includes 10 free mail scans a year and a free identity package, while New York Registered Agent LLC charges $49 a year for standard scanning and $9 a month per identity service after 90 days. And New York has an annual LLC filing fee set by the tax department, which starts at $25 and is based on New York source gross income, according to the Form IT-204-LL instructions. The edition I read was 2020, so check the current form for your year and whether it applies to your LLC.
The takeaway is that the vendor choice moves your five-year bill by a couple hundred dollars either way. The bigger levers are the county you publish in and the state you form in. A bad publication county costs more than the entire gap between these two companies.
Which One Should You Pick for Your Situation?
Pick Northwest if: you might form or register in more than one state, you want a free domain, website, email and phone line bundled with your agent, or you want one vendor and a phone number for every LLC you own. It is also my default for store owners who value predictable pricing and a human on the phone, and who are fine handling publication themselves in Albany.
Pick New York Registered Agent LLC if: your LLC will operate only in New York, you want the lowest ongoing agent fee, or you want someone else to place the newspaper notices and file the biennial statement. The $375 publication service and $100 biennial service are real money, but they buy back time during a launch.
In my experience, the do-it-yourself route is manageable if you set a calendar reminder the day you form, and the cost model above shows it runs about $375 less than paying for both add-on services. If you are the type to miss a deadline, the full-service route is cheap insurance against suspension. You can also start with one vendor and revisit the choice at your first renewal.
Should You Form Your LLC in New York or Wyoming?
This is the question I ask every coaching client planning a New York LLC. If you live in New York and run the business from New York, forming at home is usually simplest, and one of the two vendors above fits. If you do not live there, forming in another state and then registering in New York is sometimes tempting.
The Wyoming numbers are low. Wyoming’s business fee schedule lists Articles of Organization at $100 and an annual report license tax of $60 or two-tenths of a mill on the dollar, whichever is greater, so $60 is the minimum. Compare that with New York’s $200 filing fee and the publication and biennial costs above.
Here is the catch the old version of this post skipped. If a Wyoming LLC actually does business in New York and registers there as a foreign LLC, New York LLC Law section 802 also requires publication. The statute says a foreign LLC must publish in two county newspapers, once a week for six successive weeks, within 120 days of filing its application for authority, or its authority is suspended. New York Registered Agent LLC lists a $250 state fee for foreign LLCs. So Wyoming does not make New York’s publication cost disappear if you operate in New York.
Wyoming makes sense when you have no New York presence, such as a nomad or an owner living elsewhere. I have a separate guide on forming an LLC for digital nomads for that case. For tax treatment, talk to an accountant, because I have not verified state income tax details here and they depend on where you live.
What to Do Before and After You Pick a Registered Agent
Before you pay either vendor, have a few decisions ready: a business name, the state, the address you will list as your office (it sets your publication county), and who the members are. Check name availability with the state before you commit to a brand.
I also tell clients not to form until the business idea is real. Pick a high-ticket niche first. Then start finding suppliers, because both can shape your business name and the products you list. The order I use is niche, supplier outreach, state choice, LLC formation, publication if you are in New York, EIN, business bank account, then bookkeeping and the biennial statement reminder.
For the EIN, go straight to the IRS. Its EIN page says you never have to pay a fee for an EIN and warns about websites that charge for one. Some formation packages sell an EIN add-on, so skip it and apply yourself.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Northwest Registered Agent handle New York’s publication requirement?
On the Northwest pages I read, I could not find a service that places the newspaper notices or files the Certificate of Publication for you. Its New York pages explain the rule and say its Albany address lets you publish in Albany, where its page says ads cost about $100. New York Registered Agent LLC sells a $375 publication service, so call a Northwest Corporate Guide if you want to confirm what is offered.
Is the New York LLC publication requirement mandatory?
Yes. New York LLC Law section 206 requires publication in two newspapers, one weekly and one daily, once a week for six successive weeks, within 120 days of formation. You then file a Certificate of Publication with the Department of State, which costs $50. If you miss the deadline, the LLC’s authority to do business in New York is suspended until you file proof.
How much does New York LLC publication cost?
It depends on the county of your LLC’s office. New York Registered Agent LLC says Albany costs under $200 in fees while New York City can run over $1,000 and up to $1,500, and Northwest’s page puts Albany ads at about $100. Add the $50 state certificate fee on top, and note that those are vendor figures rather than state-set prices.
Which is cheaper, Northwest Registered Agent or New York Registered Agent LLC?
For a New York LLC, New York Registered Agent LLC is cheaper: $49 a year against Northwest’s $125, and a roughly $763 versus $957 five-year total if you do the filings yourself. Northwest includes a free identity package and 10 free mail scans a year, and it covers other states, which can tip the decision if you want one vendor.
Can I switch my registered agent later?
New York Registered Agent LLC says you can cancel its service any time with no fee, and a renewal is a natural point to compare prices. Changing the agent on your state record is a separate filing with the Department of State, and I did not verify its form or fee, so check the Department of State’s current fee schedule before you switch.
The Bottom Line
For most ecommerce store owners, Northwest Registered Agent is still my default because the bundle, the human support and the multi-state coverage make it the easier long-term home for your entities. For a New York-only LLC where cost or hands-off filings are the priority, New York Registered Agent LLC is the better value and I would not argue you out of it.
Whichever you choose, get the state right first, mark the 120-day publication deadline on your calendar the day you form, and file the biennial statement on time. Then get your EIN free from the IRS, open a business bank account, and keep your books clean from day one.
Ready to Form Your LLC?
Northwest is my default pick: $39 + state fees to start, a year of registered agent service included, then $125/year. Prices as of October 2026.
