Buying the tool is step one. Actually running the gap analysis is where most store owners drop the ball. Here’s the workflow I walk my coaching clients through.
Start with a list of 30 to 50 buying-intent prompts in your niche. These are the questions a real buyer would ask before purchasing in your category. Don’t overthink this. If you sell electric bikes, your starting list looks like “best electric mountain bike under $4,000,” “what’s the best e-bike for hunting,” “torque sensor vs cadence sensor electric bike,” and so on. Keep them specific and purchase-oriented. Educational prompts (“how does an e-bike motor work”) matter less than buying prompts.
Plug those prompts into your tool of choice. Add 3 to 5 of your closest competitors. Run the gap analysis report and look at three things. First, which prompts have your top competitors winning AND your store missing? Those are your priority content gaps. Second, which prompts has nobody really won yet (low share of voice across the board)? Those are your easy-win opportunities where you can establish authority before someone else does. Third, which prompts mention your store but with sentiment problems? Those need content updates rather than new content.
From there, the work is content production. Write 3,000-word buyer’s guides that genuinely answer those questions better than what competitors have published. Get those guides linked from authoritative sources. AI assistants update their context faster than Google updates its index, so you’ll usually see citation lifts within 60 to 90 days.
