If you are picking an email marketing platform and weighing AWeber against Klaviyo, you have two genuinely good products that serve very different operators. AWeber is a focused, mature email platform built around list growth, automation, deliverability, and traditional small-business email marketing, with one of the longest track records in the industry. Klaviyo is an ecommerce-native platform built specifically for online stores, with deep Shopify and BigCommerce integration, advanced behavioral automation, SMS marketing, and product-data-driven segmentation that is genuinely best-in-class for serious ecommerce. The two are not really competing for the same operator once you account for what each was built to do. I have built and sold a lot of ecommerce stores over the years, including a three-store package that sold for $700,000, and through the work I do at Ecommerce Paradise I help people pick the right tool for the actual stage they are at, so I want to walk through this honestly: AWeber is the better fit for specific reader profiles, Klaviyo is the better fit for others.
This is a use-case-focused comparison rather than a head-to-head winner declaration, because the right answer depends entirely on what kind of operator you are and what you are selling. One ground rule on figures: both platforms price by list size, so every AWeber price below carries its subscriber band and its billing mode. I am not putting a Klaviyo dollar figure in this article, because Klaviyo prices per contact on a sliding scale and I have not read its ladder at the band you are actually at. Price that one in Klaviyo’s own calculator at your real contact count.
If you want the platforms on their own terms, I have a full AWeber review for 2026. The other side is covered in my Klaviyo pricing guide.
For AWeber’s numbers on their own, band by band and in both billing modes, see my AWeber pricing guide for 2026. The full picture sits inside my complete guide to high-ticket dropshipping.
Start With AWeber’s Real Free Plan
If you are a smaller operator, content-side business, or non-Shopify seller wanting a focused email platform with strong deliverability and a genuinely useful free tier, AWeber is the better fit. AWeber Free is published as lifetime access at no cost for up to 500 subscribers and 3,000 emails monthly.
AWeber vs Klaviyo at a Glance
Here is the quick side-by-side for 2026. The core difference is focused email specialist versus ecommerce-native platform built for serious online stores.
| Factor | AWeber | Klaviyo |
|---|---|---|
| Primary audience | Small business, content, general email | Serious ecommerce, Shopify/BigCommerce stores |
| Ecommerce integration | Basic, via integrations | Deep native Shopify, BigCommerce, others |
| Free plan | Up to 500 subscribers, 3,000 emails monthly | Up to 250 contacts, 500 sends/mo |
| Behavioral automation | Strong general automation | Best-in-class for ecommerce |
| SMS marketing | Not included | Built-in, metered |
| Pricing at scale | 14 published subscriber bands, both billing modes | Significantly higher at larger lists |
| Best for | Most non-ecommerce or smaller stores | Ecommerce operators serious about email revenue |
Both are credible, well-supported platforms. The decisive difference is what you are actually selling and how deeply email marketing drives your revenue. That decides the fit almost entirely.
Who AWeber Is Genuinely Better For
Rather than declaring a flat winner, here are the specific operator profiles where AWeber is the right call. If you match one of these, AWeber is the better choice for your business.
1. Smaller Stores Where Email Is Not Yet a Major Revenue Driver
If you are running a smaller ecommerce store doing under low six figures annually, where email contributes meaningful but not dominant revenue, paying for Klaviyo’s enterprise-grade feature set is overkill and the cost scales fast. AWeber’s free 500-subscriber plan and reasonable paid tiers give you a fully functional email program for a fraction of the cost, and the feature gap matters less because you are not yet running the sophisticated behavioral flows that justify Klaviyo’s premium. The right move at smaller scale is the right-sized tool, not the most expensive one.
2. Non-Ecommerce or Content-Side Businesses
This is the clearest fit. Klaviyo was built for ecommerce, the entire data model, segmentation logic, and feature set is oriented around stores with product catalogs, purchase history, and abandoned carts. If you run a service business, a content site, a course business, a SaaS, a coaching practice, or anything that is not a product-driven ecommerce store, you cannot use most of what Klaviyo offers, and you will pay for capability you do not have data to feed. AWeber’s general-purpose email platform fits that profile cleanly.
3. Operators Who Prioritize Deliverability Above All Else
This is the single most important metric in email marketing, because an email in spam is an email that never converts. AWeber’s 25-year track record translates to genuinely strong inbox placement, and it is one of the platforms specifically known in the industry for deliverability. Klaviyo’s deliverability is solid, but AWeber’s tenure and reputation in this specific area are a real advantage for operators who treat deliverability as priority number one regardless of other features.
4. Operators Running Non-Shopify or Non-BigCommerce Stores
Klaviyo’s biggest advantage is deep native integration with Shopify and BigCommerce, where it pulls product data, purchase history, and behavioral signals automatically and uses them to power segmentation and flows. If you run a WooCommerce store, a custom platform, an Etsy shop, an Amazon FBA business, or any platform without Klaviyo’s deep native connection, much of the Klaviyo premium evaporates because the integration is shallower or done through intermediate tools. AWeber works fine across all those platforms via standard integrations and costs less in the process.
5. Operators on a Tighter Budget Wanting Real Free-Plan Value
AWeber’s free plan is published at up to 500 subscribers and 3,000 emails monthly, with lifetime access at no cost, a single list profile and a single workflow automation. That is the whole published entitlement and it is worth stating precisely rather than calling it full features, because AWeber does not publish a feature list, a landing page allowance or a support level for the free tier anywhere. Klaviyo’s free plan is the more restrictive of the two on raw headroom, at 250 contacts and 500 sends per month. For an operator who genuinely needs a free or near-free starting point and wants room to grow before paying, AWeber gives you significantly more, the same way I tell operators to keep the early stack lean rather than over-spending on tools you have not yet earned the right to use when building around a high-ticket niche.
Who Klaviyo Is Genuinely Better For
To be honest about the trade-offs, here are the operator profiles where Klaviyo is decisively the right call. If you match one of these, Klaviyo is the better platform for you, and the higher cost is genuinely justified.
If you run a serious ecommerce store on Shopify or BigCommerce doing six figures and up in annual revenue, Klaviyo’s deep native integration is a real revenue driver. The behavioral automation pulls product data, purchase history, browse behavior, and cart abandonment events automatically, and uses them to power segmentation and flows that are genuinely best-in-class for ecommerce. Operators in this profile commonly attribute 20 to 30 percent or more of total revenue to email marketing, and Klaviyo’s advanced flows (abandoned cart, browse abandonment, post-purchase, win-back) are why. At that level, Klaviyo’s higher cost is dwarfed by the revenue lift.
Klaviyo also wins for operators who want integrated SMS marketing alongside email in one platform, with the same segmentation and automation logic working across both channels. AWeber does not include SMS. And for ecommerce operators who need detailed revenue attribution, product-level reporting, and predictive analytics for customer lifetime value and churn, Klaviyo’s reporting depth is genuinely ahead of AWeber’s for that use case. The honest summary is that Klaviyo wins decisively for serious ecommerce operators where email is a major revenue lever, while AWeber wins for smaller stores, non-ecommerce businesses, deliverability-focused senders, non-Shopify operators, and budget-conscious starters. Pick based on which profile you actually match.
Get a Focused, Cost-Effective Email Platform
If you match the AWeber profile, smaller store, non-Shopify, content business, or simply do not yet need Klaviyo’s enterprise-grade features, AWeber’s free plan and reasonable paid tiers are the right-sized choice.
What AWeber Costs at Every List Size, and What Klaviyo Costs Instead
The cost argument is the whole reason this comparison exists, so it deserves real numbers rather than the word “affordable”. AWeber publishes its entire ladder on one page, with a slider carrying 14 subscriber bands from 0 to 500 subscribers up to 100,001 to 150,000, and moving it reprices all three of its cards at once. Klaviyo does not work that way: it prices per contact and bundles SMS credits separately, so the only honest way to compare is to price your own contact count in Klaviyo’s calculator and set it beside the AWeber row you land on below.
| Subscriber band | Lite, billed annually | Lite, monthly | Plus, billed annually | Plus, monthly |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0 to 500 | $12.50/mo | $15.00/mo | $20.00/mo | $30.00/mo |
| 501 to 1,000 | $20.83/mo | $25.00/mo | $37.50/mo | $45.00/mo |
| 1,001 to 2,500 | $29.17/mo | $35.00/mo | $45.83/mo | $55.00/mo |
| 2,501 to 5,000 | $50.00/mo | $60.00/mo | $75.00/mo | $90.00/mo |
| 5,001 to 7,500 | $70.83/mo | $85.00/mo | $100.00/mo | $120.00/mo |
| 7,501 to 10,000 | $83.33/mo | $100.00/mo | $112.50/mo | $135.00/mo |
| 10,001 to 15,000 | $125.00/mo | $150.00/mo | $150.00/mo | $180.00/mo |
| 15,001 to 20,000 | $154.17/mo | $185.00/mo | $179.17/mo | $215.00/mo |
Three things in that table decide most of the money. The first is that Done For You, AWeber’s third card, is priced identically to Plus at every single band, so the Plus columns double as the Done For You columns; the only difference is a setup fee currently shown as $599 marked down to $79. The second is that the annual discount is not the same size on both cards. Lite at 0 to 500 subscribers is published as $150 a year against $180 if you paid $15.00 twelve times, a saving of $30, which AWeber states as 16.7 percent. Plus at the same band is $240 a year against $360 at $30.00 monthly, a saving of $120, which AWeber states as 33.3 percent. Four times the dollars, on the plan you were less likely to pick.
The third is the step between bands, and the first step is the brutal one. Cross from 500 subscribers to 501 and Lite moves from $12.50 to $20.83 a month on annual billing, up $8.33 or about 67 percent, while Plus moves from $20.00 to $37.50, up $17.50 or 87.5 percent. On monthly billing it is $15.00 to $25.00 and $30.00 to $45.00. AWeber’s own pricing FAQ says it will automatically upgrade you to the tier that matches your subscriber count, so if you are sitting at 490 subscribers with a stack of dead addresses on the list, cleaning them out before renewal is worth real money.
Feature gating matters as much as the price, and this is where an AWeber comparison usually goes wrong. AWeber does not only charge more for a bigger list; it also caps what Lite can do. Lite gets 1 email list, 3 landing pages, 3 email automations, 3 users and 1 custom segment, against unlimited on each of those for Plus, and Lite carries a 1.0% transaction fee where Plus is 0.6%. Send volume is capped too: Lite sends 10 times your subscriber maximum per month and Plus sends 12 times, which at 500 subscribers is 5,000 sends against 6,000. If you run a store with real order volume, that 0.4 point on the transaction fee can outweigh the $7.50 a month difference between the cards at the entry band.
Two AWeber line items nobody writing about this category seems to mention. The first is the Done For You card itself, at $20.00 a month billed annually plus the $79 setup fee, so year one at 0 to 500 subscribers is $240 plus $79, which is $319 against $240 for Plus alone. AWeber lists a branded email template, a professional landing page, a branded thank you page, a signup form, newsletter drafts delivered weekly, a 1:1 setup call and 30 days of unlimited edits for that $79. For a store owner who has been putting off building a proper welcome sequence, that is a cheap way to get one built.
The second is the Hold Package at $4.99 a month, which AWeber describes as a way to pause an account without losing subscribers, automations, landing pages or other account information. Seasonal stores should know this exists. Three months on hold instead of three months of Plus at $30.00 monthly is $14.97 against $90.00, a difference of $75.03, with the list intact when trading resumes. It is not self-serve; AWeber says you contact its customer solutions team to move onto it.
At the far end, AWeber’s knowledge base publishes a plan the pricing page does not carry: Unlimited, at a flat rate of $899 per month, with unlimited subscriber capacity including unsubscribed addresses and the ability to send up to 15 times to each subscriber monthly. The crossover is billing-mode dependent. At the 100,001 to 150,000 band Plus is $1,050.00 a month on monthly billing, so Unlimited saves $151 a month, but on annual billing Plus is $875.00, so Unlimited costs $24 a month more. If you ever get a list that big, the plan that wins depends on how you pay.
Set that against Klaviyo and the shape of the decision is clear even without Klaviyo’s figures in front of you. AWeber’s cost is a step function you can read in advance and plan a year of budget around. Klaviyo’s cost is a per-contact curve that also carries metered SMS, and it is justified by revenue attribution rather than by being cheap. If email is already a named line in your revenue, model Klaviyo at your contact count and compare it against the lift, not against the AWeber row. If email is not yet a named line in your revenue, the AWeber row is the honest budget.
How to Decide
Run through this short checklist. If three or more apply, AWeber is your fit: you run a smaller ecommerce store, a non-ecommerce business, a content site, or a service business; you are not on Shopify or BigCommerce; deliverability is your top priority; you want a real free plan with room to grow; you are budget-conscious and want predictable pricing.
If three or more of these apply, Klaviyo is your fit: you run a serious ecommerce store on Shopify or BigCommerce; email already drives or could drive significant revenue for your business; you want deep behavioral automation and product-data-driven segmentation; you want SMS marketing integrated with email in one platform; you can model the per-contact pricing at your projected list size and the math works.
Match the platform to your actual business model and revenue stage, not the feature list. Price it at the contact count you expect in a year and in the billing mode you will really use.
The same discipline applies to the rest of a store buildout. It starts with finding vetted high-ticket suppliers. The paperwork deserves the same care, which is why I keep a business formation and legal foundation checklist.

Frequently Asked Questions: AWeber vs Klaviyo
Should I pick AWeber or Klaviyo?
Depends on your profile. AWeber is the better fit for smaller ecommerce stores, non-ecommerce businesses, content sites, non-Shopify operators, and anyone budget-conscious or prioritizing deliverability. Klaviyo is the better fit for serious ecommerce operators on Shopify or BigCommerce where email already drives or could drive major revenue and the per-contact cost is justified.
Is Klaviyo worth the higher cost?
For serious ecommerce operators on Shopify or BigCommerce doing six figures and up where email contributes 20 to 30 percent or more of revenue, yes, Klaviyo’s behavioral automation depth is genuinely revenue-driving and the cost is dwarfed by the lift. For smaller stores or non-ecommerce operators, the answer is usually no, the features go unused and AWeber’s lower cost wins.
Can I use Klaviyo without Shopify?
You can, but a meaningful chunk of Klaviyo’s advantage comes from its deep native Shopify and BigCommerce integration. Without that, you are using integrations or intermediate tools and the gap to AWeber narrows significantly. For non-Shopify operators, AWeber often makes more sense.
Which has better deliverability?
AWeber has a particularly strong reputation in deliverability built over 25 years, and operators who prioritize inbox placement specifically tend to prefer it. Klaviyo’s deliverability is solid but AWeber’s tenure and reputation in this specific area are a real advantage for deliverability-focused senders.
Can I switch from AWeber to Klaviyo later when I scale?
Yes, list migration between email platforms is standard. Many operators start on AWeber while their store is small and migrate to Klaviyo once email revenue and Shopify integration justify the cost. Starting with the right-sized tool and upgrading when the math works is sound, the same discipline of using the tools that match your stage. The full strategy for picking and stacking marketing tools is something I work through directly in my 1-on-1 coaching.
