Ahrefs is a great tool, but it is not the right tool for every store owner or content site. Its paid plans start at $29 a month for Starter, then jump to $129 for Lite and $249 for Standard, according to Ahrefs’ own pricing page when I checked in October 2026. If you only need keyword research, rank tracking and a site audit, you may be paying for more than you use.
I’m Trevor from Ecommerce Paradise, and I build search traffic for high-ticket stores and affiliate sites. This guide compares seven alternatives to Ahrefs, from a free option to full suites that cost more than $100 a month. I only quote prices and limits I could confirm, and where a vendor does not publish a number, I say so.
If you are still choosing what to sell, start with my guide to what high-ticket dropshipping is before you spend money on SEO software. Some links below are affiliate links, so I may earn a commission if you sign up, at no extra cost to you.
Cut Your Keyword Tool Bill to Under $27 a Month
Mangools Premium costs $26.35 a month on annual billing, per my KWFinder pricing guide checked in September 2026. It covers keyword research and rank tracking in one login.
The Seven Best Ahrefs Alternatives at a Glance
Here is how the seven tools compare on price and what they are best at. All prices are in US dollars, and I list the lowest paid plan that makes sense for a working site.
| Tool | Price (monthly billing) | Price (annual billing) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ahrefs Free | $0 | $0 | Auditing and backlink checks on your own sites |
| Google Search Console | $0 | $0 | Real ranking and click data for your site |
| Mangools (KWFinder) | From $30.50 | From $18.85 | Budget keyword research and tracking |
| SE Ranking | From $129 | From $103.20 | An all-in-one suite at a lower price |
| Semrush | From $139 | From $117.33 | SEO plus wider marketing research |
| Ubersuggest | See vendor page | See vendor page | A simple, beginner-friendly tool |
| LowFruits | Not listed on the page | Not listed on the page | Finding keywords with weak competition |
The two free options sit at the top because they should be part of every stack, not because they replace Ahrefs on their own. The paid tools below them are what you choose between.
Why Look for an Ahrefs Alternative?
The first reason is price. Ahrefs Lite is $129 a month and Standard is $249, so the real working floor for many sites is well above the $29 Starter headline. I explain that gap in my Ahrefs pricing guide.
The second reason is fit. A store owner who wants to find product keywords and track a few hundred rankings does not need the same toolbox as an agency auditing a hundred sites.
The third reason is billing. My Ahrefs pricing guide notes that annual prices are not listed, and that switching to annual billing means contacting Ahrefs support, so annual savings are not something you can simply read off the page.
1. Ahrefs Free: The Zero-Cost Starting Point
Ahrefs offers a free version for sites you verify you own, and it is a smart first step before you buy anything. According to the Ahrefs Webmaster Tools page, it includes a site audit that checks 170+ technical and on-page issues, backlink and organic keyword reports, and a privacy-focused web analytics tool.
The limits are real. The site audit allows 5,000 crawl credits per project per month, and the backlink and keyword reports show up to 1,000 results at once. There is no limit on how many sites you verify.
The catch is that it only works on sites you own. You cannot use it to research a competitor, which is the main reason people pay for the full product.
Best for: checking the health and backlinks of your own store or blog at no cost.
2. Google Search Console: Free Data From the Source
Google Search Console is free, and it shows how your own pages perform in Google results. If you want to know which queries bring clicks and which pages are slipping, it tells you directly. You can set it up from the Search Console page.
It will not research your competitors or hand you new keyword ideas. What it does give you is first-party data that no paid tool can match, which is why I check it before I trust any third-party estimate. If you want a walkthrough, see my guide to Google Search Console for ecommerce.
Best for: every site owner, alongside whichever paid tool you choose.
3. Mangools (KWFinder): The Budget Pick
Mangools is the cheapest serious paid option here. According to my KWFinder pricing guide, checked on 30 September 2026, Basic costs $30.50 a month or $18.85 a month billed annually. Premium is $40.50 monthly or $26.35 annually, and Agency is $70.50 monthly or $48.85 annually.
Basic allows 100 keyword requests per 24 hours and 200 tracked keywords. Premium raises that to 500 requests and 700 tracked keywords, and Agency allows 1,200 requests and 1,500 tracked keywords.
It is built for keyword research and rank tracking, not for deep backlink analysis. If your main question is “what should I write about and where do I rank,” it is hard to beat on price. For a head-to-head, see my KWFinder vs Ahrefs comparison.
Best for: bloggers, affiliate sites and small stores that want keyword data on a tight budget.
4. SE Ranking: The Mid-Priced All-in-One
SE Ranking is the tool I point people to when they want a full suite without the Ahrefs bill. As of October 2026, its Core plan costs $129 a month or $103.20 a month billed annually. Growth costs $279 a month or $223.20 annually.
Core at $129 matches Ahrefs Lite on monthly price. On annual billing, SE Ranking Core comes to $1,238.40 a year, which is $309.60 less than twelve months billed monthly. I break down every plan and add-on in my SE Ranking pricing guide.
If you are choosing between the two directly, my Ahrefs vs SE Ranking comparison goes feature by feature.
Best for: small teams and store owners who want rank tracking, audits and research in one platform.
5. Semrush: The Broader Marketing Suite
Semrush is the closest like-for-like rival to Ahrefs. As of October 2026, its SEO plan is $139 a month, or $117.33 a month billed annually, which comes to $1,407.96 a year.
Its pitch is breadth. Beyond SEO, it is used for advertising research, content and competitor analysis, so it suits teams that run several channels from one account.
That breadth is also the downside. If you only need keyword research and rank tracking, you are paying for tools you will never open. Read my Semrush vs Ahrefs comparison for the full picture.
If the price still feels high, see my list of Semrush alternatives.
Best for: marketers who want SEO and advertising research in the same place.
6. Ubersuggest: The Beginner-Friendly Option
Ubersuggest is aimed at people who find larger suites overwhelming. I could not load its current pricing page while writing this guide, so I am not quoting a number. Check the vendor page for today’s plans before you decide.
What I can say is that it is generally positioned as the simple, lower-cost choice. If you are brand new to SEO, my Ubersuggest vs Ahrefs comparison explains where it falls short and where it is plenty.
Best for: beginners who want a gentle learning curve.
7. LowFruits: For Low-Competition Keywords
LowFruits does one job: it helps you find keywords where the pages that rank are weak. Its pricing page lists two subscription plans by credits. One gives 3,000 credits a month and 100 tracked keywords, and the other gives 10,000 credits a month and 500 tracked keywords. Credits do not roll over from month to month.
The monthly and annual prices did not display on the page when I checked, so I will not guess. The page does state a 14-day money-back guarantee with no questions asked. My LowFruits review covers how it works in practice.
Best for: new sites that need quick wins in lower-competition search results.
Get a Full SEO Suite for Less Than Ahrefs Lite
SE Ranking Core is $103.20 a month on annual billing, compared with $129 a month for Ahrefs Lite. See which plan fits your site.
What Each Option Costs Over a Year
Monthly prices hide the real gap, so here is the annual cost of the main paid options. I used the lowest plan I would recommend for a working site, and annual billing where a price is published.
| Plan | Billing used | Cost for 12 months |
|---|---|---|
| Mangools Basic | Annual | $226.20 |
| Mangools Premium | Annual | $316.20 |
| SE Ranking Core | Annual | $1,238.40 |
| Semrush SEO | Annual | $1,407.96 |
| Ahrefs Lite | Monthly (annual not published) | $1,548 |
| Ahrefs Standard | Monthly (annual not published) | $2,988 |
The spread is large. Mangools Premium costs about a quarter of SE Ranking Core over a year, and about a tenth of Ahrefs Standard. That does not make it the better tool for every job, but it shows how much of the bill is the platform you buy rather than the data you need.
How to Choose the Right Alternative
Start with the job you actually do each week. If it is keyword research and rank tracking, Mangools is the cost-effective answer. If you want audits, tracking and research in one place, SE Ranking is the middle path.
If you run paid ads, content and SEO together, Semrush may justify the price. If you are on a very small budget, combine Ahrefs Free with Google Search Console and add a paid tool only when you hit a clear limit.
Next, think about who else needs a login. Several of these tools charge for extra users, so a team of three can cost more than the headline price. Check the user limits before you commit.
Finally, test before you buy. Run the same five keywords through two tools and see which gives you the answer you can act on. The best tool is the one you open every week.
Three Starter Stacks by Budget
If a feature list feels abstract, start from a budget instead. These stacks use only the prices I quoted above, and every one of them includes Google Search Console because it costs nothing.
The zero-dollar stack. Ahrefs Free plus Google Search Console. You audit your own site, watch your own backlinks and see your real rankings, all for $0. You cannot research competitors, so use it while you are still validating an idea.
The lean stack. Mangools Premium on annual billing at $316.20 a year, plus the two free tools. This adds competitor keyword research and rank tracking for about $26 a month, which is where most small stores should land.
The full stack. SE Ranking Core at $1,238.40 a year, or Semrush at $1,407.96 a year, both on annual billing. Choose one of them when you manage several sites, report to clients or need audits, tracking and research in a single login.
Notice that none of these stacks needs Ahrefs Standard at $2,988 a year. That is not an argument against Ahrefs. It is a reminder to buy the plan your workload justifies, and to move up only when a limit starts costing you.
Pair Your Keyword Tool With a Question Tool
A keyword tool tells you what people search for. A question tool shows what they ask along the way. AlsoAsked maps the questions people ask in Google, and it pairs well with any option above.
I cover its plans and one limit that surprised me in my AlsoAsked pricing guide. Read that before you buy so you know what the entry plan can and cannot export.
Common Mistakes When Replacing Ahrefs
The first mistake is switching tools without exporting your data. Pull your tracked keywords and key reports before you cancel, because you may not be able to get them back.
The second is chasing features you will never use. A bigger suite does not rank your site. Content, links and a clear offer do.
The third is trusting one tool’s numbers as fact. Search volume and difficulty scores are estimates, and each tool calculates them differently. Use them to compare keywords inside the same tool, and use Search Console to confirm what really happens.
The fourth is paying for a year too soon. Annual billing is cheaper, but only once you are sure the tool fits.
Putting Your SEO Tool to Work
A tool only pays for itself when you act on what it shows. Start by choosing a profitable category with my high-ticket niches list, then validate demand with your new keyword tool. Next, line up the supply side with my guide to finding dropshipping suppliers.
Set up the company properly with my business formation guide. When you are ready to build the store, Shopify is the platform I point people to.
Because you will be recommending tools and earning commissions, read the FTC’s disclosure guidance for influencers and make your affiliate relationships obvious. The US Census Bureau tracks how fast online sales are growing in its quarterly e-commerce report, which put e-commerce at 17.1% of retail sales in the second quarter of 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best free alternative to Ahrefs?
Ahrefs Free is the best starting point if you only need to audit and monitor sites you own, since it offers a site audit and backlink and keyword reports. Pair it with Google Search Console for first-party ranking data. Neither lets you research competitors.
What is the cheapest paid alternative to Ahrefs?
Mangools is the cheapest paid option I cover here, from $18.85 a month on annual billing for Basic, per my KWFinder pricing guide. Ubersuggest and LowFruits may also be low priced, but I could not confirm their current prices from the vendor pages.
Is SE Ranking better than Ahrefs?
It depends on your needs. SE Ranking Core is $129 a month, or $103.20 annually, and bundles research, tracking and audits for less than Ahrefs Standard at $249, though the limits on each plan differ. Read my Ahrefs vs SE Ranking comparison for the detail.
Is Semrush cheaper than Ahrefs?
At entry level, Semrush’s SEO plan is $139 a month and $117.33 billed annually, against $129 for Ahrefs Lite on monthly billing. Compare the limits on each plan before you decide, because the cheapest plan is rarely the one you will actually use.
Do I need a paid SEO tool at all?
Not on day one. A free stack of Ahrefs Free and Google Search Console is enough to find technical problems and see what is ranking. Add a paid tool once you hit a limit that costs you time or money.
Ready to Choose Your SEO Stack?
Semrush’s SEO plan is $117.33 a month on annual billing. Compare it against the cheaper options above before you commit.
