An air purifier reduces the concentration of airborne particulates in a room, and that is the whole of what it does. “HEPA type,” “HEPA style” and “99 percent HEPA” are not defined terms and carry no testing requirement whatsoever. If a product page uses one of those phrases rather than stating true HEPA or a 99.97 percent figure, treat it as a marketing claim. That single word is the cheapest filter to check for.
