Where a brand does not publish a number, I have written “Not published” instead of inventing one, because a missing spec is itself a data point and you deserve to see the holes.

Step One: Measure the Room and Compute the Airflow You Need
Square footage on its own is meaningless because air is a volume, not an area. What you need is cubic feet per minute of clean air delivered, and the arithmetic is short. Multiply floor area by ceiling height to get cubic feet, multiply that by the number of air changes per hour you want, then divide by 60 to convert to minutes.
Four point eight air changes per hour is the number I use. It is the rate most clinical and allergy guidance converges on for a bedroom or living room, and it is roughly double what a lot of manufacturers quietly assume when they print a coverage claim on the box. At a standard eight foot ceiling the whole formula collapses to a single multiplier: floor area times 0.64 equals required CFM.

The right hand column comes from the AHAM Verifide directory of certified air cleaners, which states the rule plainly: you want a unit whose tobacco smoke clean air delivery rate is at least two thirds of the room area. AHAM also notes that if your ceiling runs higher than eight feet you should size up to the next room bracket, which is exactly what the volume math tells you anyway.
Write your number down before you look at a single product page. If your bedroom is 250 square feet you need 160 CFM, and any machine that cannot deliver 160 CFM at a speed you can sleep through is not a candidate no matter how good the reviews are.
Step Two: Decide What You Are Actually Filtering
This is the step buyers skip most often, and it changes the filter stack completely. A machine that is excellent at pollen can be useless against a gas, and the marketing copy will not tell you which one you are holding.
Particulates
Dust, pollen, pet dander, mold spores, smoke particles and most of what an allergy sufferer reacts to are solid or liquid particles. Odors and VOCs
Cooking smells, pet odor, paint fumes, new furniture offgassing and cleaning product residue are gases. HEPA media does essentially nothing to a gas molecule. You need activated carbon, and the amount matters enormously. A carbon coated nonwoven sheet weighing a few ounces is not the same product as a granular carbon bed weighing several pounds, even though both get called “activated carbon filter” on the spec sheet.
Gases the Box Will Not Mention
Formaldehyde, radon and combustion byproducts are a different problem again. The EPA is direct about the limits here: filtration is a supplement, not a substitute. Its position on the air cleaners and air filters in the home page is that the most effective ways to improve indoor air are to reduce or remove the sources of pollutants and to ventilate with clean outdoor air, and that research shows filtration can be an effective supplement to those two things.

Step Three: Read the CADR, and Notice When There Is None
Clean air delivery rate is the only apples to apples airflow number in this category. It is measured under ANSI/AHAM AC-1 in a sealed chamber, reported separately for tobacco smoke, dust and pollen, and verified by a third party lab. Smoke is the number that matters because smoke particles are the smallest of the three, so a high smoke CADR implies competence on everything above it.
What you should notice is which brands publish one. Levoit, Blueair, Coway, Medify, Alen and AirDoctor all print CADR or a directly comparable CFM figure. Several premium brands do not. Dyson publishes air projection distance instead of a CADR equivalent. Austin Air publishes no airflow figure at all. Molekule publishes no CADR. And PuroAir, despite printing a 1,000 square foot coverage claim on the 240, publishes no CADR on its own product pages.
A missing CADR is not proof that a machine is bad. It is proof that you cannot compare it to anything, which for a buyer is nearly as unhelpful. When a brand skips the certification that would let you check its coverage claim, the coverage claim is a marketing number and should be treated as one. Step Four: Check the Air Change Rate Hiding Behind the Square Footage Claim
Every coverage claim contains an assumed air change rate, and almost nobody prints it. You can back it out in one line. Take the claimed square footage, multiply by eight for ceiling height, and divide by the machine’s CFM times 60. The result is how many air changes per hour that claim actually represents.
Run it on the PuroAir 400. The brand claims 2,000 square feet in an hour. Two thousand square feet at eight feet is 16,000 cubic feet, and 16,000 divided by 60 gives 267 CFM. That is the airflow implied by PuroAir’s own claim, and at 267 CFM the machine turns over a 2,000 square foot space exactly once per hour. One air change per hour is a real number, but it is not a clean air number, and it is five times weaker than the 4.8 figure I used in step one.
Now run it on the 240. HouseFresh reports that machine at 183 to 204 CFM, published as ANSI/AHAM AC-1 clean air delivery rate results. At 4.8 air changes per hour that supports 286 to 319 square feet, against a box claim of up to 1,000 square feet. The gap is not a scandal, it is arithmetic, and the same arithmetic applies to every brand in the category. Sizing a Bedroom Rather Than a Whole Floor
A 286 to 319 sq ft real coverage figure at 4.8 air changes per hour covers most bedrooms outright. The PuroAir 240 does that at 45 watts, which is about $68.20 of electricity a year at the 17.30 cents per kWh national average.
Step Five: Noise on the Speed You Will Actually Run
Manufacturers quote a decibel range, and buyers read the bottom of it. That is a mistake, because the bottom of the range is the sleep speed, and the sleep speed almost never delivers the CADR that justified the purchase.
The question to ask is what speed you need to hit your CFM target from step one, and how loud the machine is at that speed. A purifier rated 24 to 48 decibels is quiet at 24 and about as loud as a running dishwasher at 48. If you need speed three to clean a 300 square foot bedroom, you are living with speed three, not speed one.
Two practical rules. First, buy more airflow than you need so you can run a bigger machine on a lower speed rather than a smaller machine flat out, which is quieter and usually cheaper to run per unit of clean air. Second, treat a missing decibel spec the same way you treat a missing CADR. AirDoctor publishes no wattage or decibel figure for the 5500. Austin Air publishes no decibel figure either. Both are “Not published” in my notes.
Step Six: Wattage and the Annual Electricity Bill
A purifier is one of the few appliances that runs continuously, so wattage compounds. The US average residential electricity price was 17.30 cents per kilowatt hour for 2025 according to EIA data, and a machine left on around the clock burns watts times 24 times 365 divided by 1,000 kilowatt hours a year.

CFM per watt is the column that separates engineering from marketing. The Blueair 211i Max moves more than twice as much air per watt as the Coway 200M and more than four times as much as the IQAir. Over ten years of continuous running that difference is worth more than the purchase price of the cheaper machine.
Step Seven: Filter Cost Over Three Years
This is the number nobody checks and the number that decides the winner. Hardware is a one time payment. Filters are a subscription you did not knowingly sign up for, and on some machines they overtake the purchase price inside the first year.
Take the PuroAir 240. Across three years, on the 90 day filter cadence PuroAir’s product pages state rather than the 3 to 5 months its FAQ gives, its total cost of ownership lands at $870.59, and the hardware is only 20.7 percent of that. Filter spend overtakes the purchase price somewhere between months 12 and 15. Measured against the airflow HouseFresh reports, that works out to $4.27 of three year ownership cost per CFM, the worst ratio in the set, against $2.06 for the Blueair. The comparable three year totals are $645 for the Blueair Blue Pure 311i Max, $513 to $663 for Levoit depending on where you land in its 6 to 12 month filter interval, $768 for Coway and $795 for the Winix 5510.
The mechanism is the interval, not the sticker. A $54.00 filter on a 90 day cadence costs more per year than a $129.00 filter on a 12 month cadence, and the arithmetic is not close. Step Eight: Certifications Worth Caring About and Technologies to Avoid
Three marks are worth something and one whole category is worth avoiding.
AHAM Verifide is the one that matters most. It means an independent lab measured the CADR under ANSI/AHAM AC-1 and the manufacturer cannot quietly restate it. If a machine is not in the directory, its coverage claim is unverified.
ENERGY STAR is the efficiency mark, and the criteria are specific. The ENERGY STAR key product criteria for room air cleaners require an integrated energy factor of at least 4.4 for units with a PM2.5 CADR between 30 and 99, at least 5.4 between 100 and 149, and at least 5.6 at 150 and above, with CADR measured to the latest ANSI/AHAM AC-1 standard and measured ozone not exceeding 50 parts per billion under UL 867.
CARB certification is the safety floor. Since 2010 every portable indoor air cleaning device sold in California has had to be CARB certified, and electronic models must emit no more than 0.050 parts per million of ozone. CARB is explicit that certification only addresses ozone exposure and that it does not evaluate how well the device removes pollutants, which is a useful reminder that a certification mark answers exactly one question.
Now the category to avoid. Ozone generators sold as air purifiers should be off your list entirely. EPA guidance on ionizers and other ozone generating air cleaners states that ozone is a lung irritant, that there is no difference between ozone in outdoor smog and ozone produced by these devices, and that under some conditions ion generators can produce ozone significantly above levels thought harmful to human health. It also notes that ion generators do not remove gases or odors and may be relatively ineffective at removing large particles such as pollen and house dust allergens.
Ionizers marketed as purifiers deserve the same skepticism. Charging particles so they stick to your walls is not the same as capturing them, and abrasion can resuspend them into the air later. If a machine offers an ionizer as a toggle, my advice is to leave it off and buy the machine for its filter, not its plasma feature.

The Blue Pure 311i Max at $229.99 is the alternative if odor is part of the problem, because 32 watts and 283 smoke CADR is the best efficiency figure at that price.
Between $250 and $400, the Blue Pure 211i Max at $349.99 is the strongest engineering per dollar in the entire category. It is ENERGY STAR listed, publishes a 435 smoke CADR, and at 46 watts it delivers 9.46 CFM per watt.
