RV use is one of the few places where a portable power station is not a luxury purchase pretending to be infrastructure. It genuinely is infrastructure. You are parked somewhere with no shore power, you have a fridge that must not warm up, a CPAP that must not stop, and a rooftop air conditioner that decides whether the inside of the rig is habitable in August. That is a real load problem with a real answer, and the answer is arithmetic rather than vibes. The single most oversold claim in this category is that a portable power station will run your RV air conditioner. Most of them will not, and the ones that will need more headroom than the spec sheet implies. I will show you exactly where the line falls, using running amps published by the air conditioner manufacturer and surge behaviour described by the battery manufacturer.
The RV Unit With an Actual TT-30 Port
The Bluetti AC200L holds 2,048 Wh, delivers 2,400 W, carries a NEMA TT-30 port plus a 12 V regulated D40 outlet, expands to 7,577.6 Wh and takes 1,200 W of solar. Bluetti lists it at 847 dollars with a 5 year warranty.
What a 30 Amp RV Service Actually Is
Start with the connector, because almost every misunderstanding in this category starts there. The plug on the end of most travel trailer shore cords is a NEMA TT-30. Hubbell sells the receptacle version as catalogue number HBLTT30R and publishes its electrical ratings plainly: “Current Rating 30 A”, “Voltage Rating 125 V”, “Nema Rating TT-30R”.
Multiply those out and a 30 amp pedestal can deliver 3,750 VA at Hubbell’s rated 125 volts, or 3,600 watts at a more realistic 120 volts. That is your whole rig. One rooftop air conditioner, a fridge, some lights and a microwave, and you are already flirting with the breaker. This is why RV owners learn not to run the microwave and the air conditioner at the same time.
The Part Nobody Tells You About TT-30 Ports on Power Stations
Several power stations now advertise a TT-30 output, and buyers reasonably assume that means 30 amps. It does not. A TT-30 socket is a connector shape. What comes out of it is limited by the inverter behind it, not by the socket.
The Bluetti AC200L is the clearest example. Bluetti states it “Includes NEMA TT-30 and D40 (12V/30A, 400W max.) for RVs, Trailers, and Vans”, and separately rates the whole unit at 2,400 W. Bluetti’s own spec block for the closely related AC200P-L spells out the arrangement: “AC Outlets: 4 x120V/20A 1 x 120V/30A NEMA TT-30 2,400W In Total”. Read the last three words. Everything on that unit shares 2,400 watts.
So plugging your rig into a power station’s TT-30 port gives you 2,400 W, which is 20 amps at 120 volts, not 30. You have two thirds of a pedestal. That is still a lot, and it is enough for most of what an RV does. It is not what the connector implies.
The RV Load Table
Every figure below comes from the manufacturer of the thing being measured, and I have named the source in each row. Watts for the air conditioners are computed from published running amps at 115 volts, which is the voltage those figures are rated at.

A note on the Bluetti appliance figures. Those are Bluetti’s own illustrative wattages from its accessible loads comparison, not measurements I took, and I have labelled them that way on purpose. If your microwave draws 900 watts, use 900. The point of the table is that you can and should replace every row with the plate on your own appliance.
One arithmetic check worth doing, because it tells you something about how honest the marketing is. Bluetti says the AC180 runs an 8,100 BTU air conditioner for 0.9 hour and the AC200L runs the same load for 1.6 hours. At 85 percent inverter efficiency the AC180 holds 979 usable watt hours and the AC200L holds 1,741. Divide and both imply the same load, about 1,088 watts. Bluetti’s numbers are internally consistent. They just describe a portable air conditioner, not the thing bolted to your roof, which at 12.8 amps pulls about 35 percent more.
Running an RV Air Conditioner, and Why Most Units Cannot
There are two separate hurdles and almost every article confuses them.
Hurdle One: The Continuous Rating
A Mach 3 Plus pulls 12.8 amps while cooling, which is 1,472 watts. Any inverter rated above that can hold it, in principle. An AC180 at 1,800 W clears it. A DELTA 3 at 1,800 W clears it. A SOLIX C1000 at 1,800 W clears it. A Jackery Explorer 1000 v2 at 1,500 W rated clears it by 28 watts, which is not clearance, it is a rounding error. A Goal Zero Yeti 500 at 500 W continuous is not in the conversation.
Hurdle Two: The Startup Surge, Which Is the One That Kills You
A compressor does not sip its rated current at switch on. It slams. Bluetti is unusually straight about this in its own AC70 FAQ, which tells you not to run an air conditioner or a washing machine because “the built-in motors / compressors may have a surge power of” two to four times “the rated power, which may exceed the output of AC70”.
Apply Bluetti’s own multiplier to a Mach 3 Plus. Two times 1,472 watts is 2,944 W. Four times is 5,888 W. Now look at the published surge ratings. The AC180 states 2,700 W of Power Lifting. The DELTA 3 states a 3,600 W surge. The SOLIX C1000 states 2,400 W. The Explorer 1000 v2 states 3,000 W surge peak. Bluetti’s AC200P-L spec block states “Power lifting Mode: 3,600W Surge Power: 3,600W”. Only the Bluetti Apex 300, with 3,840 W of output and 7,680 W of lifting power, sits above the top of Bluetti’s own surge range.
This is why a soft start changes the answer. Coleman-Mach sells one and describes what it does in its 2025 catalogue: the Soft Start “in the power-up phase, REDUCES the inrush amps up to 75%”, and the kit listing repeats that it “Reduces AC compressor starting amperage up to 75% depending on AC model” and notes it “Requires less starting current” which is “great for off grid applications”. Knock 75 percent off a 5,888 W worst case and you are at about 1,472 W of inrush, which almost everything in this article can take.

Every rating in that table came off the manufacturer’s own product page this session. Where Bluetti does not publish a surge figure for the AC200L on the AC200L page, I have said so rather than borrowing the sibling model’s number and pretending it applies.
The Sizing Worked Example
Here is a realistic warm weather boondocking night, priced in delivered watt hours. Every runtime below is computed from usable watt hours at 85 percent inverter efficiency, never from nameplate. I use 85 percent because Bluetti’s own AC180 runtime table implies only 78 to 81 percent of nameplate actually reaches the load.
Four hours of rooftop air conditioning in the evening on a Mach 3 Plus at 1,472 W is 5,888 Wh delivered. Eight hours of a ResMed AirSense 11 at its published typical 56.1 W is 449 Wh. Thirty minutes of the Suburban 1,440 W water heater element is 720 Wh. Ten minutes of the coffee maker at 800 W is 133 Wh, and ten minutes of the microwave at 600 W is 100 Wh.
Add those up and you need 7,290 watt hours delivered to the sockets. Divide by 0.85 and the nameplate capacity you must actually own is 8,576 Wh.
Now compare that against real products. The AC200L holds 2,048 Wh, which covers roughly a quarter of that night. Fully expanded with additional battery packs Bluetti says the AC200L system reaches 7,577.6 Wh, which at 85 percent gives 6,441 usable watt hours. That is about four hours and twenty minutes of air conditioning and nothing else at all. The Apex 300 at 2,764.8 Wh gives 2,350 usable watt hours on its own, which is 96 minutes of rooftop air conditioning.
That is the honest shape of the problem. Air conditioning is not a load you buy a battery for. It is a load you buy a battery to bridge, for an hour or two while the sun goes down or while you wait out the hottest part of the afternoon at a rest stop. Every other load in the list is trivially affordable. The compressor eats 81 percent of the night’s energy on its own.

Bridge the Gap Between Campgrounds
2,048 Wh in the AC200L is 1,741 usable watt hours at 85 percent. That is 31.0 hours of a CPAP at ResMed’s published 56.1 W, which is just under four nights, or a residential fridge through a long afternoon with no shore power and no generator noise. It will also hold a 13,500 BTU rooftop air conditioner for 71 minutes, but only once the compressor has started, and Bluetti does not publish a surge rating for the AC200L, so plan on a soft start kit for that job.
Charging While You Drive
The thing that makes a power station workable in an RV is that you can refill it from the alternator while you are moving between sites, which turns a fixed capacity into a daily allowance.
Bluetti states the AC200L supports a “560W Alternator Charger (Charge 1 required)”, with the charger sold separately. EcoFlow offers a DELTA 3 bundle that pairs the unit with a 500 W alternator charger. Jackery sells a DC to DC alternator charger as a listed accessory.
Work out what that buys you. Three hours of driving at Bluetti’s stated 560 W puts 1,680 watt hours into the pack before charging losses, which is 82 percent of an AC200L. Two hours at EcoFlow’s 500 W is 1,000 watt hours, which is very nearly a full DELTA 3 at 1,024 Wh nameplate. If you move every day or two, alternator charging is the difference between a battery that runs down over a week and one that resets itself.
The caveat is that none of these manufacturers publish an end to end charging efficiency for the alternator path, so treat the numbers above as the input side. I am not going to invent a conversion figure I cannot source. Not published.
Roof Solar Versus Portable Panels
The constraint most people miss is that your power station has a hard ceiling on solar input regardless of how much array you bolt to the roof. Bluetti states 500 W maximum solar input on the AC180 at 12 to 60 V open circuit, and 1,200 W maximum on the AC200L. EcoFlow lists the DELTA 3 DC charge input as 500 W maximum at 11 to 60 V.
So a 1,200 W rooftop array feeding an AC180 is throwing away more than half of itself. Match the array to the unit’s stated input ceiling first, then worry about panel efficiency.
Between roof mounted and portable panels, the trade is aiming versus convenience. A roof panel is flat, permanently oriented at whatever angle the roof is, and shaded whenever you park under a tree, which is exactly where you want to park in summer. A portable panel can be aimed at the sun and left in the clearing while the rig sits in the shade. I am not going to attach a percentage to that difference because nobody publishes one that survives scrutiny, but the direction is not in doubt. The best answer for most rigs is a modest roof array for trickle charging plus one portable panel you deploy when you are stationary for a day.
12 Volt Loads Versus AC Loads
This is the easiest free win in the whole category and most people skip it.
Every watt hour that goes through the inverter loses roughly 10 to 15 percent, which is why every calculation in this article uses 85 percent. A load that can run directly on 12 volts skips that stage entirely. RV lights, most vent fans, the water pump, many 12 volt compressor fridges and a CPAP with the manufacturer’s DC converter all fall into this category.
Bluetti builds for this specifically on the RV models. The AC200L carries what Bluetti calls a “D40 (12V/30A, 400W max.)” regulated outlet, and the AC200P-L spec block adds a “48V DC Outlet: 1 x48V/8A (RV Outlet)”. The AC180 carries a simpler “12V DC Outlets: 1 x12V/10A (Car outlet, regulated.)”.
The word regulated matters more than the amperage. An unregulated 12 volt output sags as the pack drains, which is fine for a phone charger and not fine for anything that cares. Bluetti says regulated on both units, which is the right answer.
Practically, run everything you can on DC and reserve the inverter for the things that genuinely need 120 volts. On a 2,048 Wh pack, moving 300 watt hours a day of lighting and fans off the inverter and onto the DC rail gives you back roughly 53 watt hours a day. Over a two week trip that is about three quarters of a kilowatt hour you did not have to generate.
What This Category Looks Like as a Business
RV power is one of the better high ticket niches precisely because the buyer arrives with a technical question and leaves with a several thousand dollar system, not a 40 dollar accessory. No. The connector is rated 30 A at 125 V, per Hubbell’s specification for the TT-30R receptacle, but the power station behind it is not. Bluetti’s AC200P-L spec block lists four 20 amp outlets plus one TT-30 outlet and then says “2,400W In Total”. At 120 volts that is 20 amps shared across everything, not 30 amps on the TT-30.
Is alternator charging worth it?
If you move between sites regularly, yes, it is the single change that makes a power station practical in an RV. Bluetti states 560 W for the AC200L with the Charge 1 accessory, and EcoFlow bundles a 500 W alternator charger with the DELTA 3. Three hours of driving at 560 W is 1,680 watt hours before charging losses. None of the manufacturers publish an end to end efficiency for that path, so plan on somewhat less than the headline input.
Should I put panels on the roof or use portable ones?
Start by checking your unit’s solar input ceiling, because that is usually what binds. Bluetti states 500 W maximum on the AC180 and 1,200 W maximum on the AC200L, and EcoFlow lists 500 W maximum DC input on the DELTA 3. Array capacity above that ceiling is wasted. Beyond that, a portable panel you can aim and place in sunlight while the rig sits in shade is more useful per watt than a flat roof panel, which is why most experienced owners end up running both.
What about running a CPAP in the RV overnight?
That is the easiest load in this article and it is where these units genuinely shine. ResMed publishes a typical power consumption of 56.1 W for the AirSense 11 in its user guide. An AC200L at 1,741 usable watt hours divided by 56.1 W gives 31.0 hours, which is just under four nights at eight hours. The Bottom Line
For most RV owners the right purchase is a 2 kWh class unit with a TT-30 port and expandability, which in practice means the Bluetti AC200L at 847 dollars or the Renogy PowerStation 2000 at 849 dollars. Both give you 2,400 W of continuous output, both hold 2,048 Wh nameplate, and both will run everything in your rig except the air conditioner without complaint.
If the air conditioner is genuinely the reason you are buying, the honest answers are a bigger unit and a soft start, or a generator. The Bluetti Apex 300 at 2,764.8 Wh and 3,840 W handles a rooftop unit properly and still only gives you 96 minutes of it. A Coleman-Mach soft start kit, which the manufacturer says cuts inrush by up to 75 percent, does more to make a marginal setup work than any amount of extra battery.
What you are buying is availability, not cheaper energy. A power station lets you park where there is no pedestal, sleep without a generator running outside the window, keep a medical device going, and keep the fridge cold between hookups. That is worth real money. It is not a way to lower a power bill, and anyone selling it to you on those terms has not done the arithmetic.
