Most people install a VPN, tap one button and assume the job is done. That works, but it leaves the best parts of NordVPN switched off, and on hotel or airport Wi-Fi it can leave you staring at a login page that never loads. This guide covers how to use NordVPN day to day: connecting, the settings worth changing, server types, split tunneling, public Wi-Fi quirks and what to do when something breaks.
I run Ecommerce Paradise, and store owners who work from cafes, co-working spaces and airports are logging into supplier portals, ad accounts and payment dashboards on networks they do not control. If you are still working out what you will sell, start with what high-ticket dropshipping is, because a VPN only matters once the store has logins worth protecting.
Everything below comes from NordVPN’s help center and pricing page plus TechRadar and PCMag reviews, as I read them on October 7, 2026. I am describing the apps from those sources, not from a fresh install on every device, so trust the labels on your screen over my wording. A VPN is one layer of security, not a guarantee, and this is general information, not professional security advice.

Get a Protected Connection Running in Minutes
One NordVPN plan covers up to 10 devices at once, every plan carries a 30-day money-back guarantee, and the Basic 2-year price was $94.23 for the first 27 months when I checked on October 7, 2026.
What You Need Before You Start
You need an active subscription, a supported device and a Nord Account. NordVPN’s help center lists apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, Android TV, Fire TV, iOS and Apple TV, plus browser extensions for Chrome, Firefox and Edge. If you have not subscribed yet, the NordVPN plans page is where you compare Basic, Complete and Prime.
The Nord Account is one login for NordVPN, NordPass and NordLocker, and it is where you download apps, see billing history and cancel auto-renewal. The device limit matters more than people expect. NordVPN says up to 10 devices can connect at once, and PCMag’s NordVPN review notes that the cap rose from six in 2024. If devices share a server, NordVPN says they need different protocols.
How to Use NordVPN the First Time: Five Steps
This is the path from nothing to a working connection, following NordVPN’s start-up guide and its Windows install guide.
Step 1: Subscribe and create your Nord Account
Pick a plan, pay, then open the registration email and set your password. If you already use NordPass or NordLocker, add NordVPN from your Nord Account dashboard instead.
Step 2: Download and install the app
On Windows 10 (64-bit) or Windows 11, run NordVPNInstall.exe, click through the installer and choose whether to add the browser extensions. If it will not open, NordVPN suggests right-clicking it and choosing Run as Administrator.
Step 3: Log in
Open the app and click Log In. Your browser opens the Nord Account page, and you may need to allow the site to open the NordVPN link so the app can finish signing in. On Windows you can also sign in with Google or Apple ID.
Step 4: Connect
The fastest route is Secure my connection, which picks the recommended server. You can also search for a country or server, or pick from the list. On Linux the terminal command is nordvpn connect, or nordvpn connect followed by a server such as uk715.
Step 5: Confirm it worked
The status should change from Not connected to Connected. For a second opinion, load an IP-lookup site and check that it shows the server’s location, and run a DNS leak test before sensitive logins. My NordVPN setup guide covers installation in more detail.
What NordVPN Does and Does Not Hide
NordVPN’s help center says your internet provider can still see that you connected to a VPN server’s IP address, when you connected, which port the protocol uses and how much data moved. What it cannot see is the websites you visit, the pages you browse or your search history. That is the real scope of the privacy gain: your provider and the café network lose the details of where you go, not the fact that you are online.
NordVPN also says it does not log your online activity, and TechRadar’s NordVPN review says the policy has been audited six times, most recently by Deloitte at the end of 2025.
A VPN does nothing about a weak password or a phishing email, and the FTC’s cybersecurity guidance for small businesses treats it as one item among several. The same page tells owners to stop phones from connecting automatically to public Wi-Fi and to consider a VPN for secure remote connections, which is exactly the gap NordVPN fills for a traveling operator.
Settings to Change on Day One
The defaults are fine for casual browsing. If you handle business logins, these four changes are worth five minutes.
Turn on the Kill Switch
The Kill Switch blocks traffic when the VPN connection drops so your real IP does not leak. NordVPN’s help center says it works differently by platform. On Windows the feature is off by default, so you turn on the Internet Kill Switch in Settings, and an App Kill Switch can close programs you choose if the VPN disconnects.
On iPhone, iPad and the App Store version of the Mac app, it is on by default and does not show as a separate option. On Android 8.0 or later it works system-wide, and on Linux you enable it with nordvpn set killswitch on. NordVPN says the feature is not available on Amazon Fire TV Stick.
Set up Auto-connect and Trusted networks
Auto-connect starts the VPN when you join a network, so you are not exposed during the minute before you remember to open the app. On Windows it lives under Settings, then Connection and security, and you can choose all networks, Wi-Fi only, Ethernet only or mobile only. On iOS the options are Always or On Wi-Fi networks.
NordVPN’s Trusted network feature is the exception list. Add your home or office network and the VPN stays off there but turns on at the café. NordVPN notes that the Wi-Fi exceptions feature is no longer available on Android 10 or later, so Android users may not get this option. If you do trust your home network, the FTC’s guide to securing your home Wi-Fi says to set the router to WPA3 or WPA2 encryption.
Leave the protocol on Auto, with two exceptions
NordVPN’s help center says the Auto (Recommended) setting checks which protocols a server supports and connects with the fastest available one. The choices behind it are NordLynx, which NordVPN builds on WireGuard, NordWhisper and OpenVPN over TCP or UDP. For most days, leave it alone.
The first exception is NordWhisper, which NordVPN designed for restrictive networks such as offices, campuses, airports, cafes, hotels and conferences. It does not work with Dedicated IP, Meshnet or Onion Over VPN servers. The second is OpenVPN, which some specialty servers need, as I cover below.
You will also see a post-quantum encryption toggle under Connection settings. NordVPN says it works only with NordLynx, and its speed troubleshooting guide lists turning it off as one fix for a slow connection.
Lock down the Nord Account itself
Anyone who takes over your Nord Account can manage your subscription. NordVPN’s help center says you can add multi-factor authentication with an authenticator app or a FIDO2 security key, save backup codes, and then log out of all devices so they pick up the protection. CISA’s guidance on multifactor authentication recommends prioritizing phishing-resistant options such as FIDO security keys, so a hardware key is the stronger choice if you travel with one.
Worried It Will Slow You Down or Lock You Out?
You can change protocol, pick a closer server, pause protection or loosen the Kill Switch for a hotel login, and I list each fix below. The 30-day money-back guarantee lets you test it on your real workflow before you commit.
Choosing a Server: Standard vs Specialty
For everyday use, a standard server in a country near you is the right pick. NordVPN’s help center describes standard servers as the ones with the best connection speeds, and a far-away country adds latency, so try a nearby one manually if the recommended server feels slow.
Double VPN and Onion Over VPN
Double VPN routes your traffic through two servers and encrypts it twice. NordVPN aims it at journalists, activists and people in countries with heavy surveillance, and says it is slower and not recommended for everyday use. Onion Over VPN sends your traffic through the Tor network after the VPN server, without a separate Tor browser, and NordVPN says it is available only on the OpenVPN protocol.
Obfuscated servers
Obfuscated servers hide the fact that you are using a VPN, which helps on networks that block VPNs. TechRadar’s review says NordVPN offers them in only 16 of the 127 countries it counts, and that the option may not appear depending on your app and protocol. Its review also says the servers now use NordWhisper, so details vary, and you should check that the option shows up in your own app before you rely on it while traveling.
Dedicated IP
A Dedicated IP is an address only you use. NordVPN says it helps you avoid VPN blocklists and frequent CAPTCHA prompts, and the pricing page lists it as an add-on you choose at checkout, so it costs extra. It does not work with NordWhisper or post-quantum encryption, according to NordVPN’s help articles.
Split Tunneling, the App and the Browser Extension
Split tunneling lets selected apps bypass the VPN while everything else stays protected. NordVPN’s help center lists it for Windows, Android and Android TV, and Linux has an Allowlist for ports and subnets instead. TechRadar says Mac and iPhone users do not get split tunneling at all, and Android lets you exclude apps but not choose apps to protect.
There is a trap here. NordVPN says that with the Kill Switch and split tunneling both on, excluded apps can lose internet access because the Kill Switch takes priority, and it suggests enabling the Kill Switch only if you need strict no-traffic-unless-connected protection. It also warns that excluded apps can behave oddly because DNS requests still go through NordVPN, which can confuse streaming apps about your location.
PCMag points out that you can configure inverse split tunneling, which protects only chosen apps, and warns it is easy to leak data that way. If you cannot name the app that needs the bypass, you do not need the feature yet.
App or browser extension?
NordVPN’s browser extension is a proxy that covers only your browser traffic, and it does not need administrator rights. The full app covers the whole device and carries the specialty servers, protocols and Kill Switch. NordVPN says not to run the app and the extension at the same time because they interfere with each other, so pick one per device.
Using NordVPN on Public Wi-Fi, Hotels and Airports
This is the situation most traveling store owners actually care about, and it has a catch. Many hotel, airport and café networks make you accept terms on a login page, called a captive portal, before they give you internet access. If NordVPN auto-connects or the Kill Switch is on, the page may never load.
NordVPN’s help center gives a clear order of operations. Turn off Auto-connect before joining the network, turn off the Kill Switch, and fully disconnect the VPN. Join the Wi-Fi, complete the portal login in your browser, confirm a normal site loads, then reconnect NordVPN and turn the Kill Switch and Auto-connect back on.
If the portal still does not appear, NordVPN suggests loading a plain http address such as example.com, because secure addresses will not trigger the redirect. As a last step, forget the network in your device settings and rejoin it. If you cannot even reach the NordVPN login screen, tether to your phone’s hotspot to sign in first.
If portals keep tripping you up, try NordWhisper, since NordVPN built it for filtered networks. Either way, do not log into business banking on an open network until the VPN shows as connected.
The Security Extras: What Your Plan Includes
NordVPN has bundled several tools around the VPN, and the names have shifted. The pricing page I read lists Basic, Complete and Prime, while the help center says what used to be called Threat Protection Pro is now Scam, phishing, and malware protection. Some help pages and reviews still use older plan names such as Plus and Ultimate.
Here is what I could confirm. Scam and phishing protection is listed on all three plans. It is DNS-based and works while you are connected to a NordVPN server, except on phones, where it can run without the VPN. The ad and tracker blocker plus anti-malware and browsing protection are listed for Complete and Prime, are desktop features, and need Windows 10 or 11 or the sideloaded Mac app for the fuller version.
Dark Web Monitor appears on every plan. NordVPN’s help center says the basic version watches up to five email addresses, while the Pro version on Complete and Prime covers up to eight emails, two credit cards, two national ID numbers and one phone number. If the extras matter to you, compare tiers on the NordVPN pricing page before choosing a term, and do not assume the VPN-focused Basic plan includes them.
You will also see Meshnet, which NordVPN describes as a private network between your own devices for file sharing and remote access. TechRadar calls it unique but notes it lacks post-quantum encryption. I would ignore it until you have a specific need, such as reaching your office computer while traveling.
TVs, Consoles and Routers
NordVPN has apps for Android TV, Fire TV and Apple TV. Game consoles cannot run VPN apps, so NordVPN’s help center says to set the VPN up on a router or share a VPN-protected hotspot from a Windows PC. A router counts as one device against your 10 yet protects everything on the network, but NordVPN says an ISP-issued router probably will not support VPN setups.
For TVs without an app, NordVPN offers SmartDNS, which unlocks region-limited content without protecting the device and can take up to 10 minutes to activate. On streaming, expect mixed results. In TechRadar’s tests only YouTube US and Prime Video Australia failed to load, but results change, and NordVPN states its service should never be used to bypass copyright rules.
Using NordVPN When You Run an Online Store
For a store owner, a VPN mostly protects logins, so list them first: supplier dealer portals, your payment processor, ad accounts, email and your business bank. If you manage dealer accounts, my guide to finding suppliers for high-ticket dropshipping is worth having open, because each portal has its own security rules.
Before you travel, log into each service once with the VPN on and make sure you can complete any verification step. Some platforms can treat a sudden login from another country as suspicious, and that is easier to sort out at home than from an airport. A Dedicated IP presents a consistent address, though it costs extra and I would not buy one before you know you need it. If you want a second opinion on which tools your store needs, that is what my coaching is for.
Keep the business separate from your personal life on paper too. My guide to business formation for high-ticket dropshipping explains why a business entity and its own accounts are easier to secure and track, and I am not giving tax advice, so ask an accountant how to treat a software cost. If you have not picked what to sell, my high-ticket niches list is a better use of this week than a VPN.
If you want the store built for you, my done-for-you store build covers that. If you would rather learn it yourself, start with the free mini course.
Fixing the Most Common Problems
These come from NordVPN’s help center, in the order I would try them.
Session Limit Reached
This means you hit the 10-device cap or made too many connection attempts. NordVPN says to disconnect or sign out of a device you are not using, wait 10 minutes and try one connection, since repeated taps on Quick Connect can extend the wait.
The connection is slow
Connect to a country closer to you instead of the recommended server, then update the app, try another protocol, pause Real-time protection and turn off post-quantum encryption. NordVPN’s Windows guide also lists the Run Diagnostics and Reset network option, and says your antivirus may need to exclude NordVPN.
A website or streaming service blocks you
NordVPN suggests a different server in the same country, clearing the app or browser cache, turning off DNS over HTTPS and pausing Real-time protection. If you use split tunneling, test with it off.
Everything stops when the VPN drops
That is the Kill Switch doing its job. NordVPN says it keeps retrying the connection, so give it a moment before turning the feature off, and turn it back on after any hotel login.
When you need a person
NordVPN says its 24/7 live chat starts with an AI chatbot and hands you to an agent if needed, and that it has no phone support. Give your platform, app version and the exact error message.
What It Costs and Which Plan Matches How You Use It
These are the prices on NordVPN’s pricing page when I read it on October 7, 2026. Confirm them at checkout, because promotions and plan names change.
| Plan | 2-year price | 1-year price | 1-month price | Renews at |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $94.23 for the first 27 months | $65.88 for the first 12 months | $14.99 | $139.08 a year |
| Complete | $121.23 for the first 27 months | $77.88 for the first 12 months | $19.99 | $219.48 a year |
| Prime | $202.23 for the first 27 months | $113.88 for the first 12 months | $29.99 | $296.28 a year |
All plans list 10 devices and a 30-day money-back guarantee. By my own arithmetic, the Basic renewal works out to about $11.59 a month, versus about $3.49 a month on the 2-year intro price. That gap is why the renewal figure belongs in your decision from day one, and my NordVPN pricing breakdown goes through the plans in more depth.
Sources disagree on plan names, and I could not reconcile them. PCMag’s review lists a Plus tier between the VPN-only plan and Complete, with first-year prices that differ from the pricing page (it quotes $59.88 for the VPN-only plan against $65.88 on the page I read), and the help center mentions Plus and Ultimate in places, while the pricing page shows three tiers. Go by what the checkout screen says.
NordVPN’s help center describes a 7-day free trial for new customers in 15 listed countries, limited to certain 1-year and 2-year plans and to card or PayPal payments, but the pricing page I read did not mention one and the help page’s plan names do not match the pricing tiers. Treat the checkout screen as final, and if you ever want out, my guide on how to cancel NordVPN covers auto-renewal and the 30-day refund.
When NordVPN Is Not the Right Tool
NordVPN is not cheap at renewal, and TechRadar lists poor feature parity across platforms and several legal disputes among its cons. PCMag notes that TunnelBear, Surfshark and Windscribe allow unlimited simultaneous devices, which matters if you have a lot of gadgets. If you run a small team rather than a personal device list, my comparison of NordLayer vs NordVPN explains the business-product split.
My Verdict
If you work from public networks, use it in this order: connect with Secure my connection, turn on the Kill Switch, set Auto-connect with your home network as trusted, and leave the protocol on Auto. Add multi-factor authentication to the Nord Account the same day, and learn the captive portal routine before you land somewhere new.
Skip the specialty servers, Meshnet and split tunneling until you have a reason. Pick the term with the renewal number in mind, and if you do not need the extras, NordVPN’s Basic plan is the place to start.
Pick Your Term, Then Set Your Renewal Reminder
Basic renews at $139.08 a year, Complete at $219.48 and Prime at $296.28, and new purchases have a 30-day refund window. Choose the term with the renewal figure in mind and add the date to your calendar.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I use NordVPN for the first time?
Subscribe, set your Nord Account password from the registration email, install the app and log in. Then click Secure my connection and check that the status shows Connected. You can compare the plans first on the NordVPN plans page.
How many devices can I use NordVPN on at once?
NordVPN says up to 10. If devices share a server they need different protocols, and a router counts as one device even though it protects everything on that network.
Should I leave NordVPN on all the time?
For public Wi-Fi, auto-connect is the safest habit. At home you can add your network to the Trusted networks list so the VPN stays off there, and apps that must bypass it can use split tunneling on the platforms that support it.
Why is NordVPN slow or not connecting?
Try a closer country, update the app, switch protocol and pause Real-time protection. Wait 10 minutes if you see Session Limit Reached, and on hotel Wi-Fi finish the captive portal login with the VPN off first.
Do I need the Complete or Prime plan to use NordVPN well?
Not for the VPN itself, since every plan lists 10 devices and the 30-day guarantee. Complete adds the ad blocker, password manager and cloud storage, so choose it only if you will use them, and review the tiers on the current NordVPN plans before you buy.
