ShipStation is the default shipping tool for a lot of online stores, and for good reason. It connects to nearly everything and handles labels in bulk. But the bill is built on shipment tiers, so every time your order volume climbs, the monthly fee climbs with it. If you are paying for features you never open, it is worth looking at what else is out there.

At Ecommerce Paradise, I teach people to run online stores. Shipping is one of the first real costs a new high-ticket dropshipping store runs into once orders start moving. This guide compares four ShipStation alternatives on software fees, carriers and fit, using each vendor’s own page checked in October 2026. Where a page does not show a number, I write “not shown” instead of guessing. Some links below are affiliate links, so I may earn a commission if you sign up, at no extra cost to you.

Ship Without Paying a Monthly Software Fee

Easyship lists a Free plan that it calls “Free forever,” with no credit card required and setup in about 3 minutes. Test your real rates before you spend a dollar.

The Four Best ShipStation Alternatives at a Glance

Here is how the four compare on software cost, carriers and the kind of seller each one fits. Postage is paid separately with every tool, so these figures cover the software only.

Tool Software cost Carriers Best for
Easyship Free plan; paid prices not shown Discounted couriers, count not shown International and cross-border sellers
Shippo Free up to 30 labels; Pro $17 a month on annual billing USPS, UPS, FedEx, DHL Express Small stores that outgrow free
Pirate Ship No monthly fees UPS and USPS US sellers who only need labels
Veeqo Free shipping plan; paid tiers not shown UPS, USPS, FedEx, DHL, OnTrac, Amazon Shipping Multichannel sellers with high volume

If you ship internationally or want to compare many couriers in one place, I would start with Easyship. The sections below explain who should pick something else.

What ShipStation Actually Costs

To judge an alternative, you need the baseline. The ShipStation pricing page lists three plans, and each one scales by monthly shipment tier. Starter allows 3 users and runs $14.99 for 50 shipments, $29.99 for 100, $39.99 for 500, $79.99 for 1,000 and $174.99 for 5,000.

Standard allows 10 users and runs $29.99 for 50 shipments, $59.99 for 100, $89.99 for 500 and $149.99 for 1,000. Premium allows 15 users and starts at $349.99 for 50 shipments. Every plan carries a 30-day free trial with no credit card required, and the page lists no per-label fee.

There is a monthly and annual toggle advertising 20% savings, but the page does not show annual prices. It also does not say what happens if you ship more than the top tier on your plan. The main lesson is that the bill follows your volume, so a store that doubles its orders will see the fee jump.

Why Sellers Look for Something Else

The first reason is cost at low volume. A store shipping 100 orders a month pays $29.99 on Starter or $59.99 on Standard, and that is before postage. For a new store, that is a fixed cost that arrives before profit does.

The second reason is complexity. ShipStation lists features such as warehouse management and LTL freight quoting, which a small seller shipping boxes from a spare room will never use.

The third reason is flexibility. Some alternatives give you a free tier and charge only when you need more, which suits a store still finding its volume.

What to Compare Before You Switch

Start with your monthly shipment count, because every pricing model here rewards a different range. A free plan with a label cap is fine at 30 orders and painful at 300.

Next, check which carriers you need. If you ship heavy items with FedEx, a tool that supports only UPS and USPS is a dead end.

Then look at where you sell. Make sure the tool connects to your store, your marketplaces and your order flow, because manual CSV imports get old fast.

Finally, ask about postage. Software fees are only part of the cost, and rates vary by carrier and by tool.

1. Easyship: Best for International Shipping

Easyship is the one I point people to first when they ship across borders. Its plans page lists a Free plan with core shipping features, discounted shipping rates, intelligent courier selection, import tax and duty calculation and smart box selection.

Plus adds shipping rates at checkout, the ability to link your own courier account, order auto-sync and live chat. Premier adds tax and duty at checkout, pre-generated return labels, multi-box shipping and 24/7 phone support. Enterprise is listed at up to 5,000 monthly shipments with a global 3PL fulfillment network as an add-on.

Here is the catch. When I checked, the page showed placeholder values for plan prices and shipment limits, so I cannot quote them. It does say annual billing saves 20%, and Plus, Premier and Enterprise include a 14-day free trial. The FAQ states there are no hidden fees beyond the subscription plus postage and insurance.

My own guide to ecommerce shipping for beginners covers how to think about rates and carriers before you pick a tool.

Best for: sellers who ship internationally and want duties and taxes handled up front.

2. Shippo: Best Step-Up From Free

Shippo suits sellers who want to start free and pay as they grow. Its pricing page lists a free Starter plan with up to 30 labels a month and a Pro plan at $17 a month, or $205 a year, which is listed as a 10% saving.

Pro covers up to 10,000 labels in tiered bands, but the page does not clearly show the price for each band. Premier is contact sales only, with unlimited shipments and a dedicated account manager. All plans include discounted USPS, UPS, FedEx and DHL Express labels, though no discount percentages are given.

Starter charges 5 cents a label if you connect your own carrier account, while Pro and Premier do not. Postage is paid separately, and non-US address validation costs 9, 8 or 6 cents per validation depending on the plan.

I broke down every tier in my Shippo pricing guide.

Best for: small stores that want to begin on a free plan and add features later.

3. Pirate Ship: Best for Simple US Labels

Pirate Ship is the no-frills option. Its website says there are “No monthly fees, payment fees, or hidden costs,” and that it is paid by the carriers rather than by you. No credit card is needed to create an account.

The limits are clear. It supports UPS and USPS, and the UPS discounts apply to shipments that originate in the United States only. The page also notes that UPS may change its rates at any time without notice.

It does not show shipment volume limits, FedEx or DHL support, or the list of store integrations, so check those before you commit. Support is listed by email or chat, which the page says runs 14 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Best for: US sellers who only need to buy and print labels at a discount.

4. Veeqo: Best Free Option for High Volume

Veeqo stands out because its free shipping plan has no stated shipment cap. Its free ShipStation alternative page lists “Unlimited users and shipments,” with no subscription costs to ship, and says carriers pay Veeqo a commission on each label.

Rates are based on Amazon’s pre-negotiated pricing with UPS, USPS, FedEx and DHL, and you can earn up to 5% back in Veeqo Credits on eligible shipments. You can also connect your own carrier accounts and use your negotiated rates.

Listed channels include Amazon, eBay, Shopify, Walmart, TikTok and WooCommerce. Paid tiers exist for inventory management and demand forecasting, but their prices and contents are not shown, and neither is whether Veeqo Credits expire.

Best for: multichannel sellers with growing volume who want to avoid per-shipment pricing.

Skip the Rate Guessing Game

Easyship compares discounted couriers in one place and calculates import duties and taxes up front, so international orders do not surprise you at the door.

What You Pay for Software at Different Volumes

Software fees are easier to compare side by side. This table shows the listed monthly software cost at three order volumes, using ShipStation’s own tiers as the yardstick. Postage is excluded everywhere.

Tool About 30 shipments About 100 shipments About 500 shipments
ShipStation Starter $14.99 $29.99 $39.99
ShipStation Standard $29.99 $59.99 $89.99
Shippo $0 (Starter) Pro from $17, band price not shown Not shown
Easyship Free plan, limits not shown Not shown Not shown
Pirate Ship $0 $0 $0
Veeqo (free shipping plan) $0 $0 $0

Two cautions apply. A zero software fee does not mean zero cost, because postage rates differ by tool and carrier. The ShipStation figures use the tier that covers each volume, so 30 shipments falls into the 50-shipment tier.

The bigger point is that three of these options charge nothing for software at 500 shipments a month, while ShipStation charges $39.99 to $89.99. Whether you save money depends entirely on the rates you get.

When ShipStation Is Still the Right Call

I do not tell everyone to leave. If you run a warehouse, need advanced inventory features or ship LTL freight, ShipStation’s higher plans add warehouse management, custom analytics and auto-routing. Its own site describes rate shopping across 200+ parcel carriers and 50+ LTL freight carriers.

The same goes for teams that need many user seats. Standard allows 10 users and Premium allows 15, which beats most free plans. For a small store shipping a few dozen boxes a week, though, a lighter tool usually wins.

How to Choose Between the Alternatives

Begin with where your customers are. If most orders ship inside the United States, Pirate Ship or Veeqo may be enough. If you ship abroad, Easyship’s duty and tax tools matter more.

Then think about your store. If you run on Shopify, make sure the shipping tool syncs orders and tracking back automatically. A tool that needs manual updates costs you hours every week.

Next, plan for post-purchase communication. A tracking tool such as AfterShip can cut the “where is my order” emails. I reviewed it in my AfterShip review for dropshipping.

Last, run a test. Ship ten real orders through your top two picks and compare label cost, time to print and how smoothly tracking flows back to the customer.

Questions to Ask Before You Trust a Shipping Tool

Ask where the discounted rates come from. Pirate Ship says carriers pay it, and Veeqo says carriers pay it a commission on each label, so the business model is the label itself. That is fine, but it means the rate you see is the product.

Ask what happens when you grow. Free plans often cap labels or users, and the next plan up may change your per-label cost, your support level or both.

Ask about returns. Some plans include return labels and some do not, and a high-ticket store with a generous return policy will use them more than most.

Ask how claims work. When a package is damaged or lost, you need a clear process for filing with the carrier, and the tool you pick should make that easy to find.

How to Switch Without Disrupting Orders

Do not cancel the old tool first. Set up the new one, connect your store and ship a handful of orders through it while the old plan is still active.

Export your order history, customer addresses and saved packages from ShipStation before you leave. Rebuild your shipping presets, such as box sizes and default weights, in the new tool so label creation stays fast.

Update any automation that touches shipping. If your store pushes tracking numbers to customers, test one order end to end before you switch everything over.

Common Mistakes When Changing Shipping Software

The first mistake is picking on software price alone. A free tool with worse postage rates can cost more than a paid tool with better ones once your volume grows.

The second is ignoring carrier coverage. A tool that supports only two carriers limits you the day a customer needs a different service.

The third is missing the delivery promise. The FTC explains your obligations in its guide to the Mail, Internet, or Telephone Order Merchandise Rule, which says sellers must have a reasonable basis for any shipping time they advertise.

The fourth is switching during peak season. Move in a quiet month, because a hiccup in November costs far more than one in February.

Where Shipping Fits in a High-Ticket Business

High-ticket orders often ship as freight or with white-glove delivery, so a basic parcel label tool may not cover every product. Check how each supplier ships before you commit to software, and compare the numbers against the US Census Bureau e-commerce report to see how fast online retail is growing.

Yes. Its pricing page lists a 30-day free trial on every plan, with no credit card required. Annual prices are not shown, even though the page advertises a 20% saving.

Several allow it. Shippo lists the option, with a 5 cent label fee on Starter, and Veeqo says you can connect your own carrier accounts. Easyship lists linking your own courier account on its Plus plan.
