Most people who want cleaner indoor air start by shopping. They open a tab, sort by review count, and buy a box with a fan in it. I have spent fifteen years selling physical products, and I can tell you that the box with the fan in it is the fifth most useful thing you can do, not the first. That order matters, and it is the reason I wrote this piece for E-Commerce Paradise instead of another roundup.
The ranking below is not my opinion. The Environmental Protection Agency has published the same three step hierarchy for years: control the source, then ventilate, then filter. Source control comes first because it is usually the most effective way to improve indoor air quality and because it is more cost efficient than increasing ventilation, which raises your energy bill. Filtration comes last because, in the agency’s own words, no air cleaner or filter will eliminate all of the air pollutants in your home.
So this article ranks interventions by effect size and by what they cost you, cheapest and most effective first. Source control. Ventilation. Humidity. Duct filtration. Portable filtration. Then a section on the things that do not work, including two that actively make your air worse. Notice the shape of that table. The first four lines cost a rounding error compared to the fifth, and three of them are things you do once. The gap between doing nothing and doing the first four is far larger than the gap between doing the first four and adding a purifier on top.
1. Source Control, the Intervention EPA Puts First
Source control means removing or sealing the thing that is putting pollution into your air, rather than trying to catch the pollution afterward. EPA states plainly that for most indoor air quality problems in the home, source control is the most effective solution. It is also the only intervention on this list with a theoretical ceiling of complete removal, because a source that is gone emits nothing.
In a normal house the list is short and boring. Combustion is first: unvented space heaters, unvented gas fireplaces, kerosene heaters, and cigarette smoke. EPA groups cooking with those as a primary indoor source of particulate matter. Candles and incense belong on the list too, and the fact that they smell pleasant is not evidence that they are clean, because scent is the smell of something evaporating into the room you breathe in.
Second is stored chemistry. Half used paint cans, solvents, adhesives, pesticides, and the cabinet of cleaning products under the sink all off gas while sealed. EPA recommends buying limited quantities of products you use seasonally and disposing of unused containers through hazardous waste collection rather than storing them. Moving that cabinet to a detached garage or a shed is free and it removes a continuous emitter from your living space.
Third is dust reservoirs. Carpet, upholstery, and clutter hold settled particles and release them when disturbed. A vacuum with a sealed HEPA path and damp dusting move material out of the house instead of stirring it into the air. This is unglamorous and it works, which describes most of source control.
The reason people skip this step is that it produces nothing to look at. There is no display showing a green number. That is a marketing problem, not an evidence problem.
2. Ventilation, and Why ASHRAE 62.2 Exists
Ventilation is the second lever because dilution works on everything at once. Filters are selective, since most media targets either particles or gases and not both. Outdoor air dilutes carbon dioxide, formaldehyde, cooking smoke, radon, and human odor simultaneously, with no media to replace.
EPA describes three ways outdoor air gets into a house. Infiltration happens through openings, joints, and cracks in walls, floors, and ceilings, and it happens in every home to some degree. Natural ventilation is open windows and doors. Mechanical ventilation is a fan that is designed to bring outdoor air in, and EPA notes that most residential forced air heating and cooling systems do not mechanically bring fresh air into the house at all. That last sentence surprises people who assume their furnace is ventilating them. It is recirculating them.
ASHRAE Standard 62.2 exists because houses got tighter faster than anyone built ventilation into them. Air sealing and modern construction cut infiltration, which is good for energy bills and bad for pollutant removal, so the standard sets a minimum whole house mechanical rate rather than trusting leaks. In the 2013 and later editions the formula is 7.5 CFM per occupant plus 3 CFM per 100 square feet of floor area, and occupants are counted as the number of bedrooms plus one. The 2010 edition used 1 CFM per 100 square feet, so the floor area term tripled.
Run the arithmetic on a three bedroom, 2,000 square foot house. Occupants count as four, so 7.5 times 4 gives 30 CFM. Floor area gives 3 times 20, or 60 CFM. Total is 90 CFM of continuous outdoor air. That is the target, and it is a useful number because it tells you whether cracking a window for ten minutes is a real intervention or a gesture. A bathroom exhaust fan on a timer, a supply fan, or a balanced heat recovery ventilator can all deliver it.
Local exhaust is the other half of the standard, and it matters more than the whole house number for spot pollution. Kitchen exhaust vented outdoors and bathroom exhaust vented outdoors remove moisture and combustion products at the point where they are produced, before they mix into the rest of the house. Vented outdoors is the operative phrase. A recirculating range hood that blows through a charcoal pad and back into the kitchen does not remove particles from your home.
3. Humidity Between 30 and 50 Percent
Humidity is third because it is cheap, it is set and forget, and it controls a whole category of biological problems that no filter addresses at the source. EPA’s guidance is to keep indoor relative humidity below 60 percent, and ideally between 30 and 50 percent.
The upper bound is about biology. At 60 percent and above, EPA notes that high humidity facilitates mold development. Keeping levels lower also discourages pests such as cockroaches and dust mites. That matters because dust mite allergen is not really an airborne particle in the way pollen is. It settles fast, it lives in bedding and carpet, and a purifier running in the corner does very little about it. Drying the house out attacks the population instead of chasing the debris.
The lower bound is about comfort and material behavior. Very dry air is associated with irritation of eyes, nose, and throat, and it shrinks wood and cracks finishes. The 30 percent floor is where most guidance stops recommending further drying.
Condensation is your free diagnostic. EPA points out that condensation forms when warm humid air meets a cold surface, which means water on the inside of your windows on a cold morning is telling you the indoor moisture load is too high. That is a signal to run exhaust fans during and after showers and cooking, to check that the clothes dryer actually vents outdoors, and to look at whether a dehumidifier belongs in the basement. A twenty dollar hygrometer turns all of this from a guess into a reading.
4. HVAC Filtration and the MERV Your System Can Take
If you have ducted heating or cooling, the filter slot is the highest leverage filtration in the house, because it treats the whole volume of air the system moves rather than one room. EPA recommends selecting a furnace or HVAC filter rated at least MERV 13, or as high as your system will accommodate. That second clause is the part people skip, and it is the part that breaks equipment.
MERV runs 1 through 16 and is scored across three particle size bands: 0.3 to 1 micron, 1 to 3 microns, and 3 to 10 microns. Only MERV 11 and above are tested at all in the smallest band, which is the band that matters most for health. MERV 11 must remove at least 20 percent of 0.3 to 1 micron particles. MERV 13 must remove at least 50 percent. That is why MERV 13 is the number EPA keeps naming, and why a MERV 8 filter is essentially a device for protecting your blower rather than your lungs.
Now the constraint. Higher efficiency media resists airflow, and that resistance is measured in inches of water column. The Department of Energy’s Building America program notes that most residential HVAC systems operate efficiently when total system pressure drop stays no higher than about 0.4 to 0.5 inches of water column, and that the filter alone commonly accounts for 20 to 50 percent of the total depending on configuration and how loaded it is. Push past that and you get reduced efficiency, in humid climates you can ice the evaporator coil, and over time you can cook the blower motor.
The fix is media area, not lower efficiency. Depth is what buys you headroom. Building America gives three MERV 7 filters from the same manufacturer measured at 300 feet per minute: the one inch filter reads 0.20 inches of water column, the two inch reads 0.13, and the four inch reads 0.12. Same rating, nearly half the resistance, purely because the deeper pleats carry more surface area. If your air handler has a one inch slot and you want MERV 13, the right move is usually to have the slot widened to four or five inches rather than to jam a restrictive one inch filter in and hope.
Two more practical notes. Fit matters as much as rating, because air that goes around the filter through a gap in the track is air you did not filter. And runtime matters, because EPA’s technical summary points out that low system runtimes can greatly limit the effectiveness of a furnace filter. If your system only runs when it is heating or cooling, the filter is only working then. Many thermostats have a circulate setting that runs the blower a set number of minutes per hour, which converts your duct filter into something closer to a whole house air cleaner.
5. Portable HEPA Filtration, and Why It Is Fifth
Portable purifiers are useful. They are just useful after the first four things, not instead of them. EPA’s technical summary reports that studies of portable HEPA cleaners found roughly 50 percent or higher reductions in fine particle exposure, and that most intervention studies found a statistically significant association with at least one marker of improved health outcome, while noting that the improvements were typically modest and that usually only a fraction of the measured outcomes improved. That is a real effect described honestly, and it is not the same sentence as the one on the box.
The number that matters is Clean Air Delivery Rate, which is measured under the AHAM AC-1 protocol and published in the AHAM Verifide directory for tobacco smoke, dust, and pollen. AHAM’s own sizing rule is that the tobacco smoke CADR should be at least two thirds of the room’s floor area, so a 120 square foot room needs a smoke CADR of at least 80. I use a stricter version in this cluster: required CFM equals square feet times ceiling height times 4.8, divided by 60, which at an eight foot ceiling simplifies to square feet times 0.64. That is 4.8 air changes per hour, which is the level most manufacturers quietly assume when they publish a room size and then never mention again.

Two things fall out of that table. First, a unit that publishes no CADR is asking you to trust a marketing figure instead of a test result, and PuroAir’s up to 1,000 square feet claim does not survive the 4.8 air changes math by a factor of roughly three. Second, price and performance are only loosely coupled. The Airmega 400S costs more than twice the Blue Pure 211i Max and moves less rated smoke CADR while drawing more power. 6. The Things That Do Not Work, and the Ones That Hurt
This is the section that saves you the most money, because everything in it is a purchase you should not make.
Ozone generators are first and they are not a gray area. The California Air Resources Board strongly advises against the use of ozone generators in spaces occupied by people or animals, and lists coughing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, impaired breathing, worsened asthma, and potential permanent lung damage among the effects it attributes to ozone exposure. CARB adopted a regulation in 2007 limiting ozone emissions from indoor air cleaning devices, and it maintains a list of potentially hazardous ozone generators sold as air purifiers while warning that a device’s absence from the list is not proof of safety. EPA’s technical summary adds the blunt version: no federal government agency has approved these devices for use in occupied spaces.
Devices that produce ozone as a side effect are the harder case, because they are sold as ordinary purifiers. EPA warns to avoid air cleaners and furnace filters that intentionally produce ozone, and notes that electrostatic precipitators, ionizers, some ultraviolet lamps, and plasma devices can emit it unintentionally. The technical summary goes further, stating that some makes and models of electrostatic precipitators and ionizers can raise indoor ozone to levels that exceed public health standards, and that ozone reacts with indoor chemistry to produce formaldehyde, other aldehydes, ketones, peroxides, and organic acids. In other words the byproducts can be worse than the original problem. The ENERGY STAR room air cleaner criteria require measured ozone under 50 parts per billion alongside an integrated energy factor of at least 5.6 for units with PM2.5 CADR of 150 or higher, and that ozone limit is there for exactly this reason.
Air sanitizers, misters, and fogging sprays belong in the same bin for a simpler reason. They add chemistry to the air you breathe in order to change how it smells. Scented plug ins do the same thing on a schedule. If your goal is fewer airborne irritants, a device whose entire function is to release compounds into the room is working against you, and the pleasant smell is the evidence that it is doing so.
Then there are houseplants, which are harmless but are not an air quality intervention. The claim traces to a 1989 NASA experiment run in sealed laboratory chambers, and it survived for thirty years because nobody scaled the result to a real room. Michael Waring and Bryan Cummings did that scaling and published it in the Journal of Exposure Science and Environmental Epidemiology in 2019. Their finding was that potted plants dissipate volatile organic compounds orders of magnitude slower than the normal rate of air exchange in a building, and that matching a building’s air handling system or a single open window would take somewhere between 100 and 1,000 plants per square meter of floor space. Keep the plants. Do not count them.
Specific Problems, Solved in the Right Order
The general ranking holds, but the specific fix changes depending on what is actually bothering you. Here are the five that come up most.
Cooking Particulates, Where the Range Hood Beats Any Purifier
Cooking is the single largest routine source of fine particles in most homes, and EPA lists it first among indoor sources of particulate matter. The correct tool is not a purifier in the corner, it is a range hood that vents outdoors, because capturing a plume at the source before it disperses is a fundamentally easier job than filtering it out of a whole room afterward.
Berkeley Lab measured seven residential hood models and found capture efficiency ranging from under 15 percent to over 98 percent. Hoods that met the Home Ventilating Institute airflow recommendation captured roughly 80 percent or more from back burners, 50 percent or more from front burners, and 60 percent or more from the oven, while some models rated for efficiency captured under 30 percent from the front burners and the oven. One premium open hood that physically covered most of the front burners exceeded 80 percent there. The researchers’ practical advice was to preferentially use the back burners, which is a free improvement available to everyone reading this.
So the order for cooking is: use the back burners, turn the hood on before you start and leave it running several minutes after you finish, confirm the hood actually ducts outside rather than recirculating, and only then think about supplemental filtration.
Radon, Which No Filter Addresses
Radon is the one problem on this list where a purifier is not merely fifth in line, it is irrelevant. EPA does not recommend air cleaners for radon reduction. Radon is a radioactive gas that enters through the foundation, and EPA identifies it as the second leading cause of lung cancer overall and the number one cause among people who never smoked, attributing roughly 21,000 deaths a year in the United States to it with an uncertainty range of 8,000 to 45,000.
The action level is 4 picocuries per liter, and the average indoor level is 1.3. EPA recommends fixing a home at 4 or above and suggests considering mitigation between 2 and 4, while noting that getting below 2 is difficult. You cannot smell it, so the only way to know is to test. If a test comes back high, the fix is a mitigation system, typically active soil depressurization, which vents soil gas from under the slab to above the roofline. The National Radon Program Services at Kansas State University, which operates under a cooperative agreement with EPA, puts national average system cost at about $1,200 with a common range of $800 to $1,500 depending on the house and the local market.
VOCs From New Furniture and Fresh Paint
EPA reports that levels of several organic compounds average two to five times higher indoors than outdoors, and that activities like paint stripping can push concentrations to 1,000 times outdoor background. New furniture, new cabinetry, engineered wood, adhesives, and fresh paint are all emitters, and they emit hardest when new.
Ventilation is the answer here, not filtration, because most filter media targets particles rather than gases. Activated carbon does adsorb some VOCs, but it saturates, and the amount of carbon in a typical consumer purifier is small relative to a room that is continuously off gassing. The EPA guidance is to increase ventilation while using and immediately after using VOC emitting products, follow label directions, buy limited quantities, and dispose of leftovers through hazardous waste collection rather than storing them. Practically, that means letting new furniture air out in a garage if you can, running exhaust or opening windows for days rather than hours after painting, and accepting that time and outdoor air are doing the work.
Wildfire Smoke
Wildfire smoke inverts the usual advice, because for once the outdoor air is the problem. EPA’s guidance is to pick one room that comfortably fits everyone, close windows and doors, and treat that room as a clean room. Filter the air in it, keep it cool with fans or air conditioning set to recirculate, and if the system has an outdoor air intake, set it to recirculate or close the intake damper.
Filter selection follows the same MERV 13 or as high as the system allows rule, with attention to sealing the filter so smoke does not bypass it. For portable units EPA says to size the cleaner to the room and to verify it does not produce ozone by checking the CARB certified list. It also acknowledges do it yourself box fan filter units built from furnace filters taped or strapped to a box fan, while noting that commercial cleaners with a known Clean Air Delivery Rate are generally preferable. The behavior half matters too: EPA advises against smoking, vaping, burning candles, using gas or wood burning appliances, spraying aerosols, frying or broiling, and dry vacuuming during a smoke event.
Pet Dander
Dander is a real airborne allergen and it is one of the cases where portable HEPA earns its keep, because the source is not going anywhere and you are not going to ventilate a cat out of the house. Even so, the order holds. Source control means grooming outside the house, keeping pets off bedding, and giving them a designated area rather than the whole floor plan. Humidity control matters because dander mixes with dust mite allergen in the same reservoirs. Then filtration, sized properly, running continuously in the room where the person and the pet actually spend time.
Bedrooms are the highest value placement for this, because sleep is the longest continuous block of exposure in the day. Actually Measuring, Instead of Guessing
Everything above is worth more if you can see whether it worked. Three instruments cover almost all of it, and none of them is expensive relative to a purifier.
PM2.5 Monitors
A consumer particulate monitor gives you a live number for fine particles, which is the pollutant most affected by cooking, candles, smoke, and filtration. The honest caveat is that low cost optical sensors are not regulatory instruments. EPA runs an Air Sensor Toolbox specifically to help people understand sensor performance before buying, and publishes an infographic titled Six Questions to Ask Before You Buy a Lower Cost Air Sensor. Treat the absolute value with some skepticism and the relative change with confidence. The useful question is not whether your kitchen is truly at 38 micrograms per cubic meter, it is whether searing a steak with the hood off puts the number ten times higher than baseline and how long it takes to come back down. That answer tells you whether your hood works.
CO2 as a Proxy for Ventilation Adequacy
Carbon dioxide is the cheapest way to find out whether outdoor air is actually reaching the room you are sitting in, because people are a known, continuous source and the only thing that removes it is dilution. ASHRAE’s position document is careful here and worth quoting accurately: indoor CO2 concentrations are not overall indicators of indoor air quality, but they can be a useful tool if users understand how they relate to it and understand the limitations. ASHRAE also states directly that Standard 62.1 does not provide a limit value for indoor CO2, so the widely repeated 1,000 parts per million figure is not an ASHRAE limit. It originated from perception of body odor rather than from a health threshold.
The right way to read the meter is as a differential above outdoor concentration, and ASHRAE recommends actually measuring your outdoor baseline rather than assuming one, noting global levels measured at 426 parts per million in 2024. The referenced CEN 16798-1 categories use indoor to outdoor differentials of 550, 800, and 1,350 parts per million as ventilation rate indicators. The important limitation is that CO2 is not well correlated with viruses, mold, formaldehyde, carbon monoxide, asbestos, or airborne particles, so a good CO2 reading tells you the room is ventilated, not that the air is clean.
Radon Test Kits
Radon is the one measurement you cannot infer from anything else, and it is the one with the largest documented health stakes. Short term kits sit in the lowest lived in level of the house for a few days and mail back to a lab. Long term kits run for months and give a better picture of an annual average, since radon swings with season, soil moisture, and how the house is operated. EPA’s threshold for action is 4 picocuries per liter. Test first, and only then decide whether you are spending money on mitigation.
What This Category Looks Like From the Seller Side
I write about air quality partly because it is a category I would sell in, and the reason is visible in everything above. The products that matter are heavy, they are technical, they have a real installation or sizing component, and they carry recurring consumables. That is close to a textbook description of the kind of product that supports a real margin, which is why filtration and ventilation equipment show up on my list of high ticket niches.

MERV 13 if your system can take it, since MERV 13 is the first rating required to remove at least 50 percent of particles in the 0.3 to 1 micron band. The constraint is pressure drop. Building America guidance is to keep total system static pressure at or under roughly 0.4 to 0.5 inches of water column, and a filter can account for 20 to 50 percent of that on its own. If you only have a one inch slot, a deeper four inch filter housing is the correct upgrade path, since a four inch MERV 7 measured 0.12 inches of water column against 0.20 for the one inch version of the same filter. Ask an HVAC contractor to measure static pressure before and after rather than guessing.

They are the category to be most careful with. EPA advises avoiding any air cleaner or filter that intentionally produces ozone, and warns that electrostatic precipitators, ionizers, some ultraviolet lamps, and plasma devices can produce it unintentionally. EPA’s technical summary notes some models can push indoor ozone above public health standards and that ozone reacts with indoor chemistry to form formaldehyde and other byproducts. Do houseplants clean the air?
No, not at any realistic density. The idea comes from a 1989 NASA study run in sealed chambers, and when Cummings and Waring rescaled those results to real rooms with normal air exchange, published in the Journal of Exposure Science and Environmental Epidemiology, they found plants remove volatile organic compounds orders of magnitude slower than ordinary building air exchange. Matching a building’s air handling system would take on the order of 100 to 1,000 plants per square meter of floor. Plants are good for other reasons. Air cleaning is not one of them.

Indoor air quality is a stack, and the cheap layers do the heavy lifting. Take out the sources, then get outdoor air moving through the house at something near the ASHRAE 62.2 rate, then hold humidity between 30 and 50 percent, then put the best filter your blower can tolerate in the duct and run the fan more often. Do those four things and you have captured most of the available improvement for a few hundred dollars, much of it one time.

And the last word goes to the things that cost money and do nothing. Skip the ozone generators outright. Be suspicious of anything that ionizes, sparks, or emits. Do not buy scent and call it air cleaning. Keep the plants because you like them.
