Descript Promo Code and Free Trial 2026: What Is Verified and What to Skip

Affiliate disclosure: This post contains affiliate links. If you buy through them, I may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Full disclosure

Search for a Descript promo code and you get pages promising 30 percent off, 50 percent off and “verified” codes that expire tomorrow. Here is what I found when I read Descript’s own pricing page and help center on October 7, 2026: there is a documented promo code field at checkout, but I could not find a standing public code, I did not see a timed free trial on paid plans, and the savings that are always there come from the Free plan, annual billing and a 50 percent education and nonprofit rate.

I run Ecommerce Paradise, and the reason store owners ask me about Descript is simple: video builds trust for expensive products. If you are still deciding whether the business model suits you, start with my guide to what high-ticket dropshipping is, then decide how much of your budget belongs in video tools.

This guide covers how Descript promo codes actually work, what the Free plan includes, what each paid plan costs, the discounts that are real, the refund rules, and who should skip the hunt. I have not bought a plan to test checkout for this post, so every figure comes from Descript’s pricing page, Descript’s help articles or a named publication, and anything I could not confirm is marked that way. Confirm the final price on the checkout screen before you pay.

Disclosure: I may earn a commission if you sign up through my Descript link, at no extra cost to you. It does not change the facts below, and I say where a discount does not apply.

Is There a Descript Promo Code in October 2026?

I could not find a standing public promo code for Descript on the pages I read. What I did find is a help article called “Applying promo codes” that explains the mechanism, which tells me codes exist, though I could not tell where Descript issues them. I saw no banner, countdown or code on the pricing page itself.

That matters because most “Descript coupon” pages are built to catch the search, not to help you pay less. A code that cannot be tied to a rule on Descript’s own pages is a claim, and I treat it as one until I see the total change on my own checkout screen.

How Promo Codes Work, According to Descript’s Help Center

The help article says you enter a code when you upgrade a drive from Free to a paid plan. At checkout you click “Add promo code,” type the code, click Apply, then finish with “Save changes.” That is the whole process, and it is quick.

The rules are the part people miss. Descript lists four: a promo code can only be used once, it can only be applied to new accounts upgrading from a free to a paid plan, you can use only one code per purchase, and some codes have an expiration date. That means an existing paying customer is not the target, and a code that was fine for your friend last month may not work for you.

What Descript Says About Affiliates and Discount Codes

I earn a commission if you sign up through my link, so here is the part that cuts against me. Descript’s affiliate help page answers the question “Can you give me a discount code that I can share with my clients/followers?” with “No, discount codes are not available to affiliates at this time.” I also could not confirm that my link changes your price at all, so treat it as a way to support this site, not a discount.

The practical takeaway is blunt. If a blog or video claims an exclusive affiliate code for Descript, that claim contradicts Descript’s own help page as I read it, and I would not trust the rest of the page either.

Why Coupon Sites Still Show Codes and Old Prices

Two things make old pages look current. First, Descript changed its plans: its help center says all Legacy and Sunset plan subscribers were migrated to new plans starting November 17, 2025, on their next billing date, and that some old prices could rise to match current pricing. Second, much of what ranks is simply old. A TechRadar review of Descript published October 7, 2021 listed a Creator plan at $12 a month and a Pro plan at $24 a month, and neither matches today’s pricing page.

If a coupon page quotes plan names or prices that do not appear on the live pricing page, the page is stale. That is a better test than any “last verified” stamp.

Does Descript Have a Free Trial?

I did not find a time-limited trial of the paid plans on the pages I read. What Descript offers instead is a permanent Free plan, and its pricing FAQ answers “Do I need to enter a credit card to try Descript?” with “No.” The same answer says the Free plan includes what you need to record, edit and mix audio and video content, though the monthly cap is only 60 media minutes.

In practice the Free plan works as the trial. You can start on Descript’s Free plan, make one real video from raw footage to export, and decide whether editing a transcript saves you time. There is no countdown and no card on file, so nothing renews behind your back.

What the Free Plan Includes

From the plan comparison on the pricing page, Free includes 60 media minutes a month, 100 AI credits as a one-time grant, unlimited projects, unlimited dynamic captions, transcription in 25 languages and 2 hours of recording sessions a month in Rooms. Most of the AI tools, including Underlord, Studio Sound, Eye Contact and Remove Filler Words, are marked “Limited.” Storage is 5GB, uploads are capped at 1GB per file, and the stock library shows only the first 5 search results.

The AI credits are the catch. Because they are a one-time 100, not a monthly refill, you can burn them in a session of experimenting. Descript’s usage article also warns that chatting with Underlord uses a few credits per message, so a long conversation with the assistant is not free.

What You Cannot Do on Free

Descript’s export help article says exports from a Free drive carry a Descript watermark in the bottom-right corner, and upgrading to Hobbyist, Creator or Business removes it from future exports. The pricing page lists Free video export at 720p, against 1080p for Hobbyist and 4K for Creator and Business. For a draft you are testing, that is fine. For a video you plan to put on a product page, it is not.

How Far 60 Media Minutes Goes

Media minutes draw down when you upload or record, whether or not you transcribe the file, and they reset each billing cycle without rolling over. By my arithmetic, 60 minutes covers about three uploads of 20 minutes of raw footage, or one 45-minute interview plus a few short clips. Descript’s usage article says Rooms recordings count only for the total length of the session, not per participant, so a one-hour recording with five guests uses 60 minutes, not 300.

Descript Plan Prices in October 2026

Here is what the pricing page showed on October 7, 2026. Prices are per person per month, and the page says annual billing saves “up to 35%” over monthly billing.

Plan Annual billing, per month Monthly billing Media hours a month AI credits a month Export
Free $0 $0 1 100 one time 720p, watermark
Hobbyist $16 $24 10 400 1080p, no watermark
Creator $24 $35 30 800 4K, no watermark
Business $50 $65 40 1,500 4K, no watermark
Enterprise Custom Custom Sized to your team Sized to your team Contact sales

Hobbyist is described as one person included. Creator lets you scale to a team of 3 and Business to a team of 5, with extra seats billed separately. Only Creator and Business can buy top ups for more media minutes or AI credits.

If you want the plan-by-plan detail, including who each tier fits, my Descript pricing guide covers it. For the product itself, my Descript review explains what the transcript editor is good and bad at.

Annual Billing: The Discount That Is Always Available

Annual billing is the closest thing to a standing discount, and it needs no code. The arithmetic below is my own, using the listed per-month prices and ignoring tax.

Plan Annual billing, 12 months Monthly billing, 12 months You save
Hobbyist $192 $288 $96 (33%)
Creator $288 $420 $132 (31%)
Business $600 $780 $180 (23%)

The page’s “up to 35%” wording is a little higher than the best figure I get from those prices, which is 33 percent on Hobbyist. It is a small gap, but it is a good example of why I calculate rather than copy the headline. The saving is real, just not quite the number on the banner.

The Catch With Paying Annually

Annual billing is paid upfront, so you are committing the full amount on day one. Descript’s refund policy says that if you cancel partway through a term your plan stays active to the end of that term and there are no prorated refunds for unused time. Plan refunds are only available within 48 hours of the invoice date.

You can start monthly and move up later. The billing overview says switching from monthly to annual takes effect immediately, with a prorated credit for the unused part of your current month. Going from annual back to monthly takes effect at the end of the term.

Student, Educator and Nonprofit Pricing

This is the one discount I would chase if you qualify, because it is large and documented. Descript’s help center says eligible teams can subscribe for $12 per editor a month paid monthly, or $8 per editor a month paid annually. Against Hobbyist’s $24 monthly and $16 annual prices, that is half price in both cases.

The page says the plan is open to students, teachers and academic staff, plus nonprofit organizations with valid charitable status such as a 501(c)(3). It includes all the features of the Hobbyist plan, and Descript says it is the only plan available at a discounted rate. That last sentence rules out promo-code hunting for anyone who is not on this plan.

How to Apply

The help article gives three steps. Create a free Descript account using your school or nonprofit email address, add a payment method (you will not be charged yet), and submit the application form, after which Descript’s team reviews the request and follows up by email. Once approved, you open the Plan tab in App Settings, click Change plan, pick any paid option, choose the EDU/NFP option from the dropdown and save.

It is built for individual creators, and Descript says teams that need extra seats or higher limits should look at Creator or Business. If you are a student making coursework videos, that is a fit. If you are a store owner who happens to take one evening class, ask whether your use matches what the form is meant for before you apply.

Referral Links From Existing Users

Descript also runs a referral program for paid users, which is separate from affiliates. Its help page says people who have never created a Descript account get a discount when they sign up through a paid user’s referral link, and that the referral must click Sign Up on the referral page for the discount to apply. Even a free account created earlier disqualifies you.

The amount is stated in fixed dollars tied to Creator pricing, which makes it easy to misread. The page’s worked example has a monthly Creator referral paying $17.50 for the first two months and $35 in month three, and it says a monthly Business referral gets $17.50 a month off for 2 months (the same dollar amount as 50 percent off Creator, so not half price on Business). For annual Creator or Business plans, it says the discount is a one-time $17.50. The page does not spell out every plan combination, so I would not rely on any of those numbers until I saw them on a checkout screen.

The same page says referral links cannot be posted on public deal or coupon sites. So if a stranger’s coupon page is handing out a referral link as a “discount,” that breaks Descript’s own rules. A friend who pays for Descript sharing their link is the intended use.

Worried You Will Pay for Hours You Never Use? Start Small and Upgrade

Descript says upgrades credit the unused time on your current plan toward the new one, and plan refunds are available within 48 hours of the invoice date. Begin on Free, then move up only when the 60 media minutes run out.

Test Descript Before You Pay →

Refund, Cancellation and Billing Rules

Refunds are where a free trial usually protects you, so here is what Descript lists in its place. Plan refunds are available within 48 hours of the invoice date, editor seat refunds within 7 days of the invoice date, and top up purchases are non-refundable. To request one you submit a request to Support from the email address on your Descript account.

That 48-hour window is short, so check your plan before the first invoice, not after. If you miss it, the policy says cancellation takes effect at the end of your billing cycle and there are no prorated refunds.

How to Cancel

Descript’s cancellation article gives the steps, and menus can change, so follow the live screen if it differs. Open App Settings (Command or Control plus comma), choose the right drive if you own several, go to the Plan tab, click Change plan, choose Downgrade to Free, select a reason (required) and click Cancel subscription. Your plan stays active until the end of the billing cycle, then the drive moves to Free, and your projects remain accessible.

Two billing quirks are worth knowing. Each drive has its own plan and its own charge, so if you see a charge after cancelling, check whether you own a second drive. Any top up balance is preserved but cannot be used on Free, and the original 12-month expiry still applies.

What You Will Actually Pay: Four Scenarios

These are my own illustrations from the listed prices, before tax. Your actual usage will differ, and the checkout screen is the final word.

Scenario Plan that covers the minutes Annual billing, 12 months Monthly billing, 12 months
One test video a month, about 30 minutes raw Free (watermark, 720p) $0 $0
One video a week, about 30 minutes raw each, so roughly 130 minutes a month Hobbyist (600 minutes) $192 $288
Same weekly video, on the education rate Education and nonprofit $96 $144
Weekly podcast plus clips, about 10 hours raw a month, in 4K Creator (30 hours) $288 $420
Three editors on Creator Creator, 3 seats $864 $1,260

The cheapest route in that table is not a code. It is picking the lowest plan whose media minutes cover your real footage, then paying annually once you are sure. Going from monthly to annual on three Creator seats saves $396 a year, which is more than most coupon pages would ever shave off.

What Top Ups Cost

If you run over on Creator or Business, top ups add more without upgrading the whole plan. Descript’s help article lists AI credits at $35 for 350, $80 for 1,000 and $200 for 4,000. Media minutes are sold in hours: 5 hours for $25, 20 hours for $80 and 50 hours for $150.

They expire 12 months after purchase and are only used after your monthly allowance is gone. Descript’s own advice is that if you keep buying them, a higher plan is probably cheaper.

How to Check a Promo Code Before You Pay

I have not verified any third-party Descript code, so I will not tell you that any of them works. What I can give you is a method that does not depend on trusting a stranger. Create a free account, start an upgrade, click “Add promo code,” enter the code and look at whether the total changes before you confirm anything.

Be careful with percentage claims, too. The FTC’s pricing guide, 16 CFR Part 233, says a former price in a comparison should be the actual, bona fide price at which the article was offered to the public on a regular basis for a reasonably substantial period of time. A banner that crosses out a price Descript never charged deserves skepticism.

Also remember how coupon pages earn money. The FTC says in its endorsement guide Q&A that you should disclose your relationship to the retailer clearly and conspicuously so readers can decide how much weight to give your endorsement, which is why this post opens with a disclosure. Look for one on any page that hands you a code.

Who Should Skip the Promo Hunt Entirely

If you will stay on the Free plan, there is nothing to discount. If you need Descript for one project, pay monthly for one month on the cheapest plan that covers your minutes and cancel before the next renewal, and do not spend an evening looking for 10 percent off a $24 charge.

If you qualify for the education rate, skip every other offer, since Descript says that is the only discounted plan. And if you are a store owner who only wants captions on a few product clips, a cheaper or free editor may be the better first stop, which the alternatives section below covers.

Treating Descript as a Store Expense

If Descript is a real part of how you sell, it belongs on a business account, not your personal card. Keeping subscriptions tidy is far easier once the business has its own bank account and records, which my guide to business formation for high-ticket dropshipping walks through. Separate payments also make the plan receipts easy to find at tax time.

On the tax side, the IRS says in Publication 334, Tax Guide for Small Business that to be deductible a business expense must be both ordinary and necessary. An ordinary expense is common and accepted in your field, and a necessary one is helpful and appropriate for your business. This is general information, not personalized tax advice, and I am not a licensed advisor, so ask an accountant whether and how your own video software counts.

Where Video Fits in a High-Ticket Store

Descript is a talking-head and tutorial tool, so it earns its keep when you explain something. Typical uses for a store are a founder introduction, a product walkthrough, a delivery and warranty explainer, and short clips for social channels. Pick the niche first from my high-ticket niches list, because the niche decides what your videos need to say.

If your products come through dealers, ask each supplier what footage and brand assets you may use before you build ads around them. My guide to finding suppliers covers the questions to ask. For a step-by-step on the editing itself, my walkthrough on how to edit a podcast in Descript shows the transcript workflow.

Cheaper or Free Alternatives if Price Is the Problem

If Descript’s price is the barrier, other tools may fit the job better and cost less. These are the figures as I read each company’s pricing page on October 7, 2026, and promotions come and go, so check before you buy.

Tool Best for Price as I read it Catch
CapCut Short vertical social clips Free to use online, no credit card required per its site I could not confirm a current Pro price
Filmora Beginners who want templates Basic $49.99 a year (shown with a discount tag), perpetual $79.99, 30-day money-back guarantee Discounted prices change, and the perpetual license covers updates within Filmora 16 only
Camtasia Screen recordings and training videos Starter $39 a year with a watermarked editor, Essentials $179.88 a year, 14-day money-back guarantee Only the Starter tier is cheap, and its editor is watermarked. Higher tiers are $249 (Create) and $599 (Pro) a year
Riverside Recording remote interviews Free plan with 2 hours of multi-track recording, Pro $24 a month annual or $29 monthly Built around recording, so editing is a smaller part of the product

For a fuller comparison, my Descript alternatives guide goes through six options by use case. My best video editing software roundup covers eight editors by price.

If you record remote interviews, the split between the two tools matters. My Descript vs Riverside comparison explains where each one fits.

My Verdict: How I Would Pay for Descript

Start on the Free plan and make one complete video. If you qualify as a student, educator or nonprofit, apply for the education rate and pay $8 a month on annual billing. Otherwise compare Descript’s paid plans and pick the lowest one whose media minutes cover your real footage, since Hobbyist at $16 a month on annual billing handles a weekly video comfortably.

The downsides are real. Media minutes and AI credits are metered and do not roll over, the plan refund window is only 48 hours, annual billing is paid upfront, and I could not find a public code to save you more. I also would not pay for the top tier until you can name a feature on it that you use weekly.

If you want help beyond the software, my free mini course is a good place to begin. For a plan built around your own store, my one-on-one coaching covers video, ads and sales alongside the business setup.

Ready to Pick a Plan Without Overpaying?

Hobbyist is $16 a month on annual billing with 10 media hours and 1080p watermark-free export, Creator is $24 with 30 media hours and 4K, and the Free plan costs nothing. Compare the current numbers on the signup page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a Descript promo code?
I could not find a standing public code as of October 7, 2026. Descript’s help center says codes work only once, only on new accounts upgrading from Free, one per purchase, and some expire. Check whether the total changes at checkout before you pay.

Does Descript have a free trial?
I did not find a time-limited trial of the paid plans. Instead there is a permanent Free plan with 60 media minutes a month, and the pricing FAQ says you do not need a credit card to try it, so start with the Free plan and upgrade only if it fits.

Does Descript offer a student discount?
Yes. The help center lists $8 per editor a month paid annually or $12 paid monthly for students, teachers, academic staff and qualifying nonprofits, with the Hobbyist feature set. You apply through a form after creating a free account with your school or nonprofit email.

Is Descript cheaper if I pay annually?
Yes. By the listed prices, annual billing saves $96 a year on Hobbyist, $132 on Creator and $180 on Business, per seat. The page says “up to 35%,” while my arithmetic gives 33 percent at best.

Can I get a refund on Descript?
Descript’s refund policy offers plan refunds within 48 hours of the invoice date and editor seat refunds within 7 days, while top ups are non-refundable. There are no prorated refunds for unused time if you cancel later, so decide quickly.
