Best Intercom Alternatives in 2026: 4 Support Tools Compared by Price, Free Plans and Fit

Intercom is a powerful customer messaging platform, and plenty of support teams love it. The trouble starts when the bill grows faster than your ticket volume, or when you notice that the AI agent is priced per outcome on top of the seats. If you run a small store and every agent seat adds to the cost, it is worth seeing what else is out there.

At Ecommerce Paradise, I answer pre-sale questions, quote requests and order follow-ups for stores that sell expensive products, so I care a lot about what a support tool actually costs. This guide compares four Intercom alternatives on price, free plans and fit, using each vendor’s own pricing page checked in October 2026. Where a page does not show a number or does not label it clearly, I say so. Some links below are affiliate links, so I may earn a commission if you sign up, at no extra cost to you. If you are new to high-ticket dropshipping, fast and clear answers are a big part of closing orders that cost thousands of dollars.

Try Live Chat and AI Answers Before You Pay Per Seat

The Four Best Intercom Alternatives at a Glance

Here is how the four compare on starting price, free plan and fit. Prices are US dollars, and I flag every case where a page does not say whether a figure is monthly or annual.

Platform Cheapest paid plan Free plan Best for
Tidio Starter at $24.17 per month (billing not labeled) Yes, 10 seats and 50 billable conversations Small stores that want chat and AI answers cheaply
Help Scout Standard at $25 per user (billing not labeled) Yes, 5 users Teams that want a clean shared inbox
LiveChat Essential at $19 annual or $25 monthly per user Not shown, 14-day trial Sales-focused chat with a fast setup
Gorgias Not shown Not shown Ecommerce stores with growing ticket volume

If you want to try a tool without a card, I would start with Tidio or Help Scout because both list a free plan. The sections below explain who should pick something else.

What Intercom Actually Costs

To judge an alternative, you need the baseline. The Intercom pricing page lists three seat-based plans: Essential at $29 per seat per month, Advanced at $85 and Expert at $132. A billed annually and billed monthly toggle appears on the page, but it does not say which price belongs to which option.

Essential covers the Messenger, a shared inbox and ticketing, pre-built reports and a public help center. Advanced adds multiple team inboxes, a workflow builder, round robin assignment, a private and multilingual help center and 20 free Lite seats. Expert adds SSO, HIPAA support, SLAs and 50 free Lite seats.

The AI agent, Fin, is priced separately from $0.99 per outcome, with no seats required. Add-ons include Copilot at $29 per agent per month and Proactive Support Plus at $99 per month. The page shows free trial buttons but does not state a trial length or a seat minimum.

Why Teams Look for Something Else

The first reason is the stacked cost. Seats are one line, the AI agent is another, and add-ons are a third, so the sticker price is rarely the final bill.

The second reason is the jump between plans. Workflows, multiple inboxes and round robin assignment begin on Advanced at $85, which is nearly three times the entry price.

The third reason is size. A small store that answers a few dozen questions a day may not need a full customer platform, and a lighter tool costs less and takes less time to learn.

What to Compare Before You Switch

Start with how the tool charges. Some charge per seat, some per conversation and some per AI resolution, and the difference matters once your volume grows.

Next, check the free plan limits. Count seats, conversations and AI answers, because those are the limits you will hit first.

Then look at what the AI costs. A tool that bills each answered question behaves very differently from one that bundles a monthly allowance.

Finally, test it on your store. Install the widget, ask it your five most common questions and see how it responds before you commit.

1. Tidio: Best for Cheap Chat and AI Answers

Tidio is the one I point most small stores to, because the free plan is generous and the paid plans start low. According to the Tidio pricing page, the free plan includes live chat and ticketing, 10 seats, email management, live video calls and Flows templates.

The free plan caps billable conversations at 50 per month. It also includes your first 50 Lyro AI conversations, which the page describes as a lifetime allowance, and reaches your first 100 Flows visitors for free.

Starter is listed at $24.17 per month with 100 billable conversations, and Growth starts at $49.17 for up to 250 billable conversations. The page has a monthly and annually toggle labeled two months free, but it does not say which basis the displayed prices use, so confirm at checkout.

Plus starts at $300 per month plus usage, and Premium is contact-only. Lyro AI is also sold as an add-on from $32.50 per month for 50 conversations, and Flows from $24.17 per month for 2,000 visitors. The page advertises a 7-day free trial with no credit card required.

My Tidio pricing guide goes through each tier. To get the AI answering questions, follow my walkthrough on setting up Tidio and training Lyro AI.

Best for: small stores that want live chat and AI answers without a big monthly bill.

2. Help Scout: Best for a Clean Shared Inbox

Help Scout suits teams that think in email rather than chat widgets. The Help Scout pricing page lists a Free plan for 5 users with 100 contacts a month, 1 inbox and 1 Docs site, and paid plans at $25, $45 and $75 per user per month.

The page shows a monthly and annual toggle with annual labeled 16% off, but it does not say which basis the listed prices use. Standard supports up to 25 users and adds live chat and SMS, multiple inboxes and the AI Inbox assistant, while Plus supports up to 50 users and adds advanced workflows, round robin routing, a secure customer portal and unlimited AI Drafts.

Pro is a book-a-demo plan with a 10-user minimum, SSO and unlimited workflows. The page advertises a 15-day trial on Standard and Plus with no card needed.

Help Scout’s AI answers are billed as an add-on. The page lists Envoy at $0.75 per resolution with a 3-month free trial, and you can set a monthly cap. Conversation limits are not shown for any plan.

My Help Scout alternatives guide covers who else to consider. To set it up, follow my shared inbox walkthrough.

Best for: small teams that want a clean shared inbox with a free plan to start.

3. LiveChat: Best for Sales-Focused Chat

LiveChat is built around talking to visitors while they are still on the page. The LiveChat pricing page lists Essential at $19 per user per month billed annually or $25 billed monthly, and Growth at $79 annually or $99 monthly.

Essential includes chat and inbox, ticketing, Shopify selling, 50 live visitors, 3 proactive campaigns, 60 days of chat history, 1 AI Agent and 10 AI resolutions a month. Growth adds chat supervision and takeover, shared canned responses, 400 live visitors, 30 proactive campaigns, unlimited chat history, 10 AI Agents and 200 AI resolutions a month.

Enterprise is custom and not shown. A free plan is not shown either, but both Essential and Growth advertise a 14-day trial with no credit card required. The page notes that these are Text plans and that older LiveChat plans sit on a separate pricing page.

My LiveChat alternatives guide lists other options. For a direct matchup, read my LiveChat vs Tidio comparison.

Best for: stores that want proactive, sales-minded chat and a quick setup.

4. Gorgias: Best for Ecommerce Ticket Volume

Gorgias is built around online stores. The Gorgias pricing page describes a helpdesk plus an AI agent on one platform, and says the helpdesk scales from 50 to 5,000 tickets a month and is never priced per agent.

The AI agent is listed on every plan and billed only when it resolves a conversation. The page I read did not show dollar amounts, plan names, order limits or a trial length, so I list all of those as not shown.

That makes Gorgias hard to price from the page alone, so confirm the numbers with the vendor before you plan around them. My Gorgias review covers how it works for ecommerce support.

Best for: growing stores that want pricing tied to ticket volume instead of seats.

Answer Buyers Faster Without Adding Seats

Tidio advertises a 7-day free trial with no credit card required, and its free plan covers 10 seats. Set up your first Flow and see how many questions it handles.

What a Month Costs for Five Agents

Per-seat pricing hides the real bill, so this table works out one month for five agents where the tool charges per seat. It is my arithmetic from the listed prices, so treat it as an estimate and not a quote.

Platform Entry plan, 5 agents Next plan up, 5 agents
Intercom (billing not labeled) Essential: $145, plus Fin at $0.99 per outcome Advanced: $425, plus Fin
Tidio (flat plans) Starter: $24.17, seats not priced Growth: from $49.17
Help Scout (billing not labeled) Standard: $125 Plus: $225
LiveChat Essential: $95 annual or $125 monthly Growth: $395 annual or $495 monthly
Gorgias Not shown Not shown

Two cautions apply. Intercom and Help Scout do not label which price is monthly, and Tidio’s Starter and Growth prices are plan-level, so the five-agent math does not apply there.

The takeaway is that Tidio’s flat plans and free 10-seat plan keep costs lowest for a small team. Per-seat tools like Intercom and LiveChat add up fast once you cross three or four agents.

When Intercom Is Still the Right Call

I would not tell every team to leave. If you run a larger support team that needs workflows, multiple inboxes and SLAs, Intercom’s Advanced and Expert plans list those features, and switching has a real retraining cost.

Intercom also lists HIPAA support and SSO on Expert, which matter in regulated settings. For a store with one or two people answering questions, though, a lighter tool with a free plan costs nothing to try first.

Which Tool Fits Which Support Style

Pre-sale questions on a product page need a fast chat widget and canned answers. Tidio and LiveChat both lead with that, and both let you set up proactive messages.

Order follow-ups and quote requests live in email. Help Scout’s shared inbox keeps those threads in one place, with notes and assignments so nothing gets answered twice.

High order volume needs ticket tools tied to your store. That is where Gorgias aims, and where tools priced by ticket volume can beat tools priced per seat.

How to Choose Between the Alternatives

Begin with your volume. If you answer under 50 conversations a month, Tidio’s free plan may cover you, and if you live in email, Help Scout’s free plan for 5 users may do the job.

Then think about the AI. Compare how each tool charges for AI answers, because a per-resolution fee behaves very differently from a monthly allowance.

Next, price the second year. Look at what you will pay when your team doubles, and check the plan where workflows and routing begin.

Last, run a two-week test. Point your widget or inbox at your top two picks and compare response times and how many questions the AI resolves.

How to Migrate Without Losing Customers

Export your conversations, contacts and help center articles from Intercom before you cancel anything. Clean out old tickets and duplicate contacts, because a messy import follows you into the new tool.

Rebuild your saved replies and help articles first, then switch the chat widget on your store. Test a few real conversations before you remove the old widget.

Keep the old account until your first full month finishes in the new one. A few weeks of overlap is cheaper than a lost customer.

Common Mistakes When Switching Support Tools

The first mistake is choosing on seat price alone. A cheap seat on a plan without workflows costs more in manual handling.

The second is ignoring AI fees. Per-outcome or per-resolution billing can grow quickly once the bot starts answering real volume.

The third is making promises the team cannot keep. The FTC’s mail, internet or telephone order merchandise rule requires sellers to have a reasonable basis for advertised shipping times and to offer a choice when orders are delayed, so train your chat and inbox answers around it.

The fourth is moving everything at once. Switch one channel, learn it, then do the rest.

Where Support Fits in a High-Ticket Business

High-ticket buyers ask more questions before they buy. They want to know about delivery, warranty, installation and returns, and a fast, accurate answer is often the difference between a sale and a lost lead.
